We hope this lovely little video I did a few years back will help you with your game which you can practice and develop at home.
Table Tennis Stance with Serve to Win
You have a longer reach with your forehand than you do with your backhand, this generally means you should stand more on your backhand side when serving.
Understanding your angles:
You can serve from anywhere on the table, but you must understand the table tennis triangles. The angles change depending on where you stand or are serving from. you have A, B and C Position and the angles will slightly alter for each position.
Stance
Backhand SERVE stance is more of a square or slightly off square position if you want to increase the amount of spin on the ball.
FOREHAND serve stance you stand side on to the table and keep your body low. try to have certain triggers to remind you where you should stand. For example, touching the table before serving.
Ball Toss:
Try to through the ball differently (height) for different serves and if you throw the ball high then your control will be reduced. Try to keep the ball toss the same for each particular service so the quality of a chosen serve does not lower.
Bouncing the ball, position and putting my thumb on the table which gives me a routine to execute a good quality service.

Thanks for this excellent lesson, Coach Eli. I can't believe I missed this when it came out as I've struggled with this issue myself. Your use of the word "ritual" really sank in with me because I always had a ritual with my tennis serve, why would a TT serve be any different? In fact, the closed stance is very similar to my old serve, and I can already see more consistency, focus, and deception with a consistent ritual. I admit when I see some good players touch or fondle the table before every point that seems a bit OCD to me, but it must relax them, so to each their own.....thanks again.

Great Content Coach Eli....How and where to position yourself while serving and how far you can get wide angles from different position is something important for serving and very true on that. Points about the importance of ball tossing and focusing on ball till you contact were really important which you pointed out are very crucial to the game. I was looking for this especially the stance and positioning and would like to see more about the positioning after serve. Also will focus more on ball tossing to get more consistent on it.. Extremely nice and helpful video. My biggest problems are 1) not having a consistent toss so that I often toss the ball too close to the body or not close enough or too away and 2) after hitting the ball with the racket the ball often hits my head or chin (I somehow tend to hit the ball near my head while sinking the body to meet the ball at a low position. Probably because I let the upper body and head fall forward as well?? ..both problem areas are extremely frustrating to me and are one of the main reasons why I can't get better in games. Because of my uncertainty, I just keep serving BH serves the whole time..I try to train it and gain some confidence, but it just does not work. I'm obviously doing something wrong. Really sad.
Do you have some tips for me to handle both problem areas?
Do you toss the ball vertically? With the whole body, or just with the forearm?
How far is the upper body (chest, head) leaning forward at the beginning and at the contact point? At which body level do you hit the ball for short serves and how far from the chest/head?
The ball flies back to the body and sideways away from the table...? I know I should toss to the ideal point where the racket meets the ball, but i don't know how to toss consistently to achieve this.. I'm sure many players have the same problems. Many thanks

This is great. One question I have is contact point: I notice that all higher-end players tend to contact the ball right at their body. And the racket follow-through rarely crosses the midpoint of their belly. In other words, there is really no follow-through. I was wondering if you could talk about contact point and follow-through. Thanks!
