  • Haiti is running out of food and fuel as gangs control the streets.
Haiti's government is appealing for an international force to combat the gangs, a call echoed by the UN Secretary-General and the US But any external force is a reminder of multiple American military interventions and many in Haiti oppose the proposal.
The country is still reeling from a series of shocks over the past 12 years. They include earthquakes, hurricanes, cholera, gang violence and a political vacuum left by the assassination of President Jovenel Moise last year.
Can a foreign force restore order in Haiti?
    Presenter: Sami Zeidan
    Guests:
Laurent Lamothe - Prime Minister of Haiti from 2012 to 2014
Joseph Harold Pierre - academic and consultant on Latin America and Haiti
Daniel Foote - former American diplomat and former U.S. special envoy to Haiti

Haiti does not need more intervention. The US and France have already done enough to keep Haiti poor. Any intervention would only be done to support Haiti's unelected, pro-West dictator and would do nothing to actually deal with the root of the issues facing the nation.
Much respect to Haitians. I'm in their corner.

The best shot would be (at least according to the Biden administration) a USA-Canada-France-Brazil coalition led by either Canada or Brazil. While easier to accept by the local population probably still not a great option, but better than nothing.

Brazil recently denied sending their troops to Haitian soil due to the last Minustah experience and the people’s sentiment about it. This has to be a Haitian lead solution, equip the police force, equip the army, let Haitian elect their own president, instead of installing puppets, one that will be fighting for Haitian interest so the country can start building its infrastructures etc. The US created the PNH (Police National D’Haiti) the US is the one who promote the police chief and the US is the one who decide what kind of guns and equipments the PNH is allowed to have so why can’t the US equip the PHN with better equipments or get out of the way so the Haitians can get better equipments for the PNH?

@@Medjic I'm not quite sure about some of your points. Brazil certainly has sent troops, so why bother denying this? I it very easy to verify that they were the main contributor of MINUSTAH. Sure, like pretty much everyone else they really want nothing to do with Haiti, but eventually something must be done.
As Haiti is becoming a failed state the solution clearly cannot come from inside the country. The Haitian army and police force are unable to keep order, and are clearly outmatched by the gangs, the government itself has clearly no support from the people and corruption is rampart.
While the quipment sent by the US and Canada certainly gives the government a better fighting chance against the gangs, it is far from enough to stabilize the country. Compare it to all the equipment in Afghanistan. The taliban have an even stronger hold on the country than before the invasion and now even have American arms. This is clearly not a situation the USA want in their backyard.

    • @Medjic

@@gubruikertje what is it that you’re not sure of? Brazil recently denied sending their troops to Haiti. Haiti has an officer named Commissaire Muscadin, you can look him up, he’s handling the gang in his town, the current gov and human rights activist wanted to call him in for questioning and eventually firing him then the people of his city took the streets in his support. So obviously there are a few men and women in the police force who can handle the situation but the gov refuses to better equip them and commend them to do their job, also few weeks ago the Haitian minister of security told the UN council that everything is as under control NOW that same administration is asking for an invasion because that’s how they’ll stay in power. If the police fix the issue then they’ll have to do an election and they’ll eventually leave office whether the Haitian elect their own president OR the US/UN install a puppet. Therefore there’s no interest to fix the security issue of the land, they just want to oppress the people as long as they can

Assuming that were to be true after ignoring the destabilization by you know who amongst other factors, does that necessarily mean Haiti should be invaded?? If that's the case, why not invade the US, for it has been struggling to solve some of its problems? The US did not want him in the region to influence Haitian politics and possibly get back in power since the US forced a coup. So Jamaica for sure can’t do anything that the US does not want because the US and it’s European allies bankrupted Jamaica in the 70s and ruined the country and took over the country and ruined Jamaica by putting in guns and drugs. First, I should say Daniel Foote should've never be part of any discussion regarding Haiti. He has no idea to see the situation of the country improves. However, I'd agree that unfortunately due to a lack of a strong police force right now, an international force to help dismantle the gangs seems to be necessary for now. In the meantime, while maintaining a peaceful situation, even though it would be tedious to organize the election but it is necessary to establish a legitimate government through that election. Yet, this election should not have the OEA supervision like in the past. This has been the mistake that country has been suffered for too long. OEA always intervenes in the elections to choose their own people which always is the opposite of what the people had chosen. The most recent one was with Martelly and Ms. Manigat. May God intervene in Haiti!!!

Intervention only brings bad things to Haiti. The gangs will just lay low, and reappear with a vengeance when the cat leaves. What is needed a political restructuring: decentralization, one prefect per region, a national guard per region, and a special status for the Port-au-Prince area. Then, the International Community could stand behind that infrastructure push and weaken the influence of the gangs and their masters.

Almost every politicians in Haiti has their own gang, almost every oligarch in Haiti have their own gang, almost every foreign organizations in Haiti have their own gang…so killing the so called gangs you see on TV isn’t the solution. The problem must be face from the roots of it. The average gang member in Haiti is 24-26 years old, which means in 2004 when the UN/US interfered and killed all the older ones the gang of today were only were 6-8 years old. Haiti needs a system that can protect domestic security, fight corruption, build infrastructures. The kids needs school, the young adults needs universities and trading skills, the adults needs jobs and business opportunities, until then poverty will continue to breed violence and insecurity. When the US occupied Haiti in 1915 they knew that, they knew exactly how much roads Haiti had built and how much needed to be built but in 2022 they’re acting dumb
