Mike -- That was a creative method of driving that large spindle. When making lamps, my solution has been to cut a plug to fit into the dado so the drive center has something to center into. After roughing the blank round, the 1st thing I then do is turn the tenon to fit into the base and then remount the blank with the tenon in my 4-jaw chuck. It works. Your method worked, too.
I might refine my methods if I did several lamps. Seems like the more one off stuff you do, the more options you have to choose from. I appreciate your comment.
Nice video as always. Curious as to why you didn't mount the main body on the woodworm screw. Was it not big enough, cause it looked like it would work? Also you might need to check your drill press. It was way louder than it should be and I noticed so strange sounds that worry me. Stay safe.
I could not turn the lamp body on the ww screw because it had a 3/8 inch dado thru the center where the screw would go. Secondly, It had to be a between centers turning because the lamp body was so long, a ww screw would not have held. Yes, my DP has issues. I can't seem to get enough tension on the motor to pull the belts tight. Also, the base (two drawer file cabinet) is on wheels so the entire contraption vibrates a lot.
