    Question...it wasn't in the video, but did you use the de-shedding nozzle to get out some of the undercoat while getting his bath if not, why not?? Is it because he's so big??

      Hi! The de-shedding nozzle is hooked up in my bathtub, and Thunder is far too large for that. The water pressure in my shower isn't strong enough for that nozzle to work.

    I used to be a forestry tech in BC and had a Bernese as my forestry dog. If I walked 20 miles a day, he did 40 or 60, roughly. He was so fit I could pick him up on 1 arm, rigid like a board. The advantage of having a Bernese is that they are glued to their owners and don't wander off. The disadvantage was the fur. Mine carried packs and pulled a toboggan, knew 27 commands, and would search for snow in the mountains to roll in, even in June. One time, the temperature was -40C and I was driving my pickup down the highway at 100 km/hr, and the dog had his head out the side of the truck box, and he was smiling. How much frost is that? But wow, the grooming! Talk about fur, I bet the birds of BC made a lot of nests from his cast-offs. Bernese nowadays, don't live for too long. Line breeding has shortened their lives, and the bond between dog and owner is so deep and intense that I weep as I type this, because the grief never really ended. To have a dog who was with me 24/7/365 and then gone, well, that's a big hole in a lonely man's life. Absolutely, the best friend a man could have. They look like big balls of fur but they are resilient and tough, will work themselves to death for you so you have to be aware of this. Don't ever give a Bernese Mountain dog a job that is beyond his abilities to do, he'll die trying, just to please you.

      It's a terrible thing to put a dog down. I used to do dog fostering and rescue. I kept the two dogs that were both unadoptable, and needed me, and I needed them. Each one lived 14 years since their adoption, made it to 16.
      When I had to put them down, that ended my desire to have dogs. Such a terrible to have to do. I can't do that again.

    I can't afford to get my Yorkie groomed, so I learned how to groom him myself. I've been battling depression for a while and as a result, his grooming has been neglected for almost 2 months. I came across your videos today and have been binge watching them. Watching you care for the animals has helped inspire me to ignore the depression long enough to care for my dog. Today I got his eye boogers cleaned, I got his paw pads shaved, his nails clipped, his sanitary done and I gave him a bath. I would have done all of his groom, but I have physical limitations that prevent me from getting all the grooming done in one day, but I'm going to finish his groom tomorrow. On behalf of Yogi Bear and myself, I would like to say thank you, so very much, for being a light in my darkness.

I also had just been recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was so grateful I had my 2 kitties. Those fellas kept me alive through that period. I volunteer at my local animal shelter whenever I get the time, and a Bernese Mountain dog came in to the shelter as an owner surrender. I live in NC, and the summers around here can get quite hot, so most people opt out of getting a dog with a really thick coat. This made it harder to get him adopted. The shelter had the idea of doing a "Doggie Days" event where they would highlight some of the dogs that had been at the shelter for a longer amount of time. They made t-shirts for some of the dogs, and had the dogs face printed on the shirt under a funny title. The Bernese Mountain dog had a shirt that said "I'm a Bernie Bro"....I happened to be wearing that shirt when I walked into a store later that day. Someone saw it, and without really paying attention simply assumed that the shirt was in support of Bernie Sanders. They started giving me an earful, and I just stood there listening to them until they were done. After they finished their tirade I simply asked them to look at the picture on the shirt under the words "I'm a Bernie Bro." I could tell they felt awkward because they just walked away and didn't say anything else.

    What a gorgeous and compliant fellow! Love the longer version. There is always a sense of disappointment when the short versions end - we have too little time to properly look at the beautiful animals. Many, many thanks for this. We grew up in South Africa in 1940s and ‘50s; had never heard of dog groomers; ours was a Rhodesian Ridgeback (or we were his); keeping him clean was a family affair: Huge tin bath on the lawn filled with warm water; great fun had by all. When he shook himself afterwards, we had our showers for the day.

    I've seen some negative comments elsewhere about the Equigrooming being too sharp or "it's basically razors" so people return it immediately. Would you consider doing a video on how to properly use the Equigroomer at home, maybe also how to properly use an undercoat rake? I had a collie years ago and my groomer was nice enough to show me how. 😅

      imagining shaving with your own skin, with razors you have to be gentle or else you’ll knick yourself. i think people are wayyy to rough with the equigroomer so they cut and slice their dog all over. it’s not the fault of the tool per se, but the person handling it not connecting common sense to the tool

      I bought the Equigroomer, and I was fascinated by how simple a concept it is! It baffles me that people can't figure out how it's supposed to work. It's not a brush, it's a saw blade... If you run it gently over the coat, the sharp edges will grip any undercoat which has fallen free of the skin, and leave the rest. Genius in its simplicity.

      I have tried the furminator and the equigroomer on my cats and my mom’s terrier. I found the equigroomer to be much more easy to use. It’s like the older loop type shedding blades, but offers me more control on a smaller animal.

    Bernese are the best. I grew up with one. And the leaning into you is very relatable. Mom used to brush out his coat as much as she could, but he was still lethargic in summer. Even tried to lay very quietly in a corner to skip a walk sometimes.
    I love how you can see Thunder trying to lean into the blowdrier a bit. And I love how most Bernese, even if they don't like something, never get aggressive. They'll try to pull away, but not get mouthy.
    It's hard work keeping that entire cuddlebug body off the ground. Of course he gets tired.

    I’ve learned so much about undercoats, thank you! The dogs with undercoats definitely need a lot of coat care to treat them humanely. My parents always refused to get a dog that shedded. With 4 kids, 2 dogs (poodle&fox terrier), 2 gerbils, 2 rabbits and a tank full of African frogs, there were plenty of animals that needed care.

    • @GotAnUmbrella
      @GotAnUmbrella Год назад +5

      Eh it depends I had a dog with undercoat, may she rest in peace, and it basically needed zero maintenance because she blew it out by herself. I bathed her maybe once a year or twice a year if that for like 10 years of her life and 8 or more years was at home in a tub without any high velocity dryer.
      Mild combing on her butt fluff was all that was needed when she got to be 10+ years old. Many Livestock Guardian Dogs have proper undercoat and basically are never groomed and everything takes care of itself.
      A LOT of it is genetics and breeding for good undercoat that maintains itself.

    • @GotAnUmbrella
      @GotAnUmbrella Год назад

      Also should mention my dog was stayed and never really suffered from spay coat. Though, she was adopted so idk how her coat was the first 3 years of life which were spent intact running the street having babies.

      @@sophieirwin3497 That's...not how it works. I can describe an oak branch taped to a birch tree and it doesn't make a whole new species.
      A breed must be established over many years, usually decades, for unique, consistent physiological traits that relate to a purpose. The offspring of two or more different breeds, whether the parents themselves are purebred or not, are mutts. Conjoining the names of two breeds together does not make a breed name. It's a ridiculous trend that is really quite dangerous; you never know how the genes of those two dogs will react. Many breeds have been bred to establish a baseline temperament. Mutts don't tend to run with those baselines, meaning a dog can be excessively excitable, aloof, or even aggressive.
