Best chicken hekka on you tube. Authentic and ono - just the same as my mother in law's hekka. She grew up on the Puunene plantation and cooked many of the old time recipes. Your lovely grand parents remind me of her. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! I’ll show this to my grandma.

Yes, I think chicken hekka is a sukiyaki type of dish. The flavor of Kikkoman shoyu is stronger and its also what is mainly used when eating sushi. Aloha shoyu is not as salty. I prefer Aloha shoyu. Thank you for watching! I appreciate the comments. :-)
awww. family dish is the best esp when you cook and eat together.
I agree!

Yes! I'm so lucky to have such wonderful grandparents. I'm planning to do more videos about them soon! :-)
Yes, it's a popular dish at our house. Remember the sauce is "to taste." My grandpa doesn't really use a measuring cup, so taste as you go. Thank you!!! and yes, I'm planning on making more.
Mahalo, I am so happy to come across your vlog, I will definitely make this onolicious island favorite!

Thank you, Paul! This is an oldie but goodie!
Hekka is NOT a Hawaiian word. There are never two consonants placed together in Hawaiian words (consonant bundles), therefore hekka, with two K's together cannot be a Hawaiian word. In the Hawaiian language, all consonants are seperated by 1or more vowels. Such a mystery, where the name comes from... but it was created in Hawaii, by Asian laborers/plantation field workers, its just not a Hawaiian dish, nor is it a Hawaiian name. Mahalo nui for sharing the recipe though... I can see the joy cooking this for your family brings your grandparents. So sweet.
Ku'ualohapau'ole You are right that Hekka is not a Hawaiian word but it was invented in Hawaii therefore a Hawaiian dish. Just like Hawaiian sweet bread which is really Portuguese.
Thank you for the clarification! Appreciate it!
That's one of the secrets to their longevity; all those vegies they ate!
Yes, I agree! Thank you for watching!
Love chicken hekka🌺
So good!
Just looking at 'em, buggah look ono!
Thank you!
It's so great your whole family participated in cooking. I once heard Hekka was a dialect in Hiroshima area meaning Sukiyaki or Sukiyaki type dish. Is that true? I also would like to know the difference in taste between Kikkoman and Aloha Shoyu. I'd appreciate if you comment on this. Your grandparents are so cute remind me of my parents in Japan.
Thank you so much!
