    You should try again but use this stuff called "Cactus Juice." Its a stabalizing resin thats almost as thin as water and is set by baking it rather than a reaction with a hardener. So its only one part and you can vacuum pot a piece for days or weeks to get all the air out, and once you take out the piece to bake the rest of the resin can be reused as much as you want. You only cure whatever gets trapped inside the item and the rest is drained off. After you can set it in normal resin and it blends in with it.
    Ask Peter Brown about it, he has used it a bunch and it the only reason I know about it.

    Might help to fully submerge the ball in an excess of resin, and then run the vacuum till it stops bubbling. I strongly doubt it was air tight, but it will help if you can get your hands on a lower viscosity resin. Also consider putting it in a pressure pot. I cannot remember if you do or don't have one of those.

    • @hornyducks4090
      @hornyducks4090 2 года назад +2

      Vacume works better for penetrating resin, a pressure pot just SHRINKS air bubbles, it does not get rid of them

    • @xidarian
      @xidarian 2 года назад

      It should be possible to make a combination vacuum and pressure pot so that you could alternate cycles of vacuum and pressure. That should get really good penetration into objects you want to cast in resin.

    • @josephgauthier5018
      @josephgauthier5018 2 года назад

      @@hornyducks4090 i am well aware of this. but what happens if you completely submerge the ball in resin and pressurize it? the bubbles shrink which allows the resin to be pushed into the nooks and crannies. of course, youll get better penetration if you pull vacuum for a while, but since they arent working with heat cured stabilizing resin, they have to switch to pressure to get it most of the way there before the resin cures

    • @josephgauthier5018
      @josephgauthier5018 2 года назад

      @@xidarian to be honest, it would be best just to pull a suitable vacuum and then pressurize it for the remaining time, instead of needlessly moving the resin in and out of the rubber band ball. But I do like your enthusiasm!

    Do each layer of rubber bands in resin... blue, add resin, wrap yellow around that then add resin, wrap red, add resin... time consuming but it might permeate the layers better so when you cut it you'll have a better cross section.

    Btw there is a small flaw with vacuuming the air bubbles out , goal here is to push as much resin as possible through the layers and soak in the resin , soaking action is not happening during the vacuuming action but during the time that you let the air in(all the voids inside the ball is under vacuum and as soon as you relief that it, resin is sucked to those parts) so when you partially submerge it into the resin, those voids that are vacuumed ,suck air from upper part , (air has much less viscosity than resin, it will get in faster than resin) so it is not filled with resin

  • @robertroach4
    @robertroach4 2 года назад +1

    You should have asked Peter Brown about casting resin. It is thinner than regular resin which allows it to permeate inside what you’re trying to cast. Also a pressure pot would be better than a vacuum chamber.

Even if it still doesn't really fix the center it should do a bit better, and going in even a little further quickly reduces the center volume..
