    I just had to let you know how right you were. Just opened this and it's a value for money monster. Great choice. 87/100 for me. The peating was done very well, mouthfeel is good and it's surprisingly balanced and rounded. I imagine it can't be much younger than 8 years

      It's wonderful stuff! And excellent value as you say, especially when on offer. I should really get around to doing a full review some day 😒😂 Cheers

      I'm definitely going to be getting some more Loch Lomonds in. Very underrated dependable whisky. And this peated release is pretty unique. Cheers Geoff 🥃

    Wow, and coming out of left field.......
    You're absolutely right, there is a lot of pressure to pick something special yet relevant. And I admit I am a single malt exclusive kinda customer, I don't do alternative scotch. Live and learn! Thank you

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +1

      Left field is exactly where I want my recommendations to come from 😉 would anybody be happy if I recommended a 1960s Balvenie or Brora? Or even a Glendronach 15?
      I'm as guilty as anyone for neglecting non single malt. There are some gems though. Thanks for watching.

    You are so right. I first tried this about a year ago and could not believe how good it was and presented at 46% and I believe it’s natural colour. Nothing I have had since has a similar taste profile so it does stand alone. I must try the unpeated red label …..good choice for your number one of 2021..Sláinte

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Howard! It's unbelievable that they went for 46% and NCF with this isn't it? We've got Balvenie going right down to 40% on their £200 21yo and Loch Lomond going full craft on a bottle that costs under £30.
      I believe you're right about natural colour. I don't think it says but it's so pale that I'd be surprised if they've doctored it. Cheers!

    I felt the same way when trying to pick my Whisky of the Year and also I believe was controversial. I hope to be able to try one of these in the states if I come across it. Great work! 👍

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +3

      You've got to be controversial 🙂 or thought provoking as I like to call it. If all I had to recommend was the same whisky that everyone else has already recommended then I think I'd keep quiet.
      I hope you'll be able to find the LL peated grain over there. It's very widely available and often super cheap over here. Cheers!

    Great runner up…Torabhaig!
    Will have to hunt down the Kingsbarns and the Loch L.
    Great presentation and delivery.
    I had planned a joke bottle as well…Mellow Corn but completely slipped my mind at the last minute. Doh!
    Cheers and best regards in the new year🥃

    • @WhiskyLock

      The Torabhaig could have easily been WOTY but I wanted to go for something that's (hopefully?) widely available and very different.
      I guess it would've been hard to hide anything behind a bottle of mellow corn 😉 Cheers John

    Some good points in this one. I'm not keen on picking stellar stuff even if it is excellent. There's a lot of bragging rights associated with limited and hard to find stuff which has only fuelled the (uncritical) hysteria surrounding those brands. The most obvious victim of that behaviour is Springbank but plenty of others too.
    Your two runners-up are a little tricky to get hold of but can be done with a bit of shopping around. I'll admit to being a bit slow off the mark regarding Loch Lomond but I thing I said in the Advent series that they release some solid stuff. One of the great things about these new distilleries is their attention to Craft. I've been enjoying the Bimber ex-bourbon Batch 3 now that some of the hysteria surrounding them has eased off. They are doing everything the old fashioned way from growing barley, direct fire, worm tubs and the whole shebang.
    I've only had the 12 year Open expression which is 'solid' without setting the earth on fire. Other than that it was an excellent single cask Hunter Laing Croftengea 14. I'll get one of these Peated Grains (malt) though because the price is good. You're right to touch on the pot and column still differences because I think that many are not aware of how column stills work. The rum world has a number of legendary pot stills but produces great column still rums too.

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +2

      Totally agree. I don't want to be adding to existing problems hype and scarcity. I also don't want to recommend unicorn drams that aren't even an option for the majority.
      I'm going to be doing a series of new distillery reviews soon and it really is true how they are mostly committed to craft in a way that traditional distilleries aren't. They know that they need to get the enthusiasts on board because they can't rely on pushing volume. Although I'm sure that many also do it because they really care about the product. Really good to see.

    • @jackthepickledhound
      @jackthepickledhound 2 года назад +3

      Croftengea, I have a single cask 10 year old, the most intriguing malt

    Interesting choice. I love the Inchmoan 12 which is another peated offering from Loch Lomond that doesn't seem to have many reviews at all, have you tried that one? Scrambling to get to the nearest Morrisons to pick up a bottle of this now!

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +1

      Hi Ramiz. I have a bottle of Inchmoan 12 on my shelf right now. I haven't tried it yet but will be reviewing it soon. The huge range of styles and various brands available from Loch Lomond (Inchmurrin, Inchfad, Inchmoan, Croftengea) can be really hard to keep track of but so far I've been very impressed.

  • @welshtoro3256
    @welshtoro3256 2 года назад +2

    I went and got a bottle of the Loch Lomond Peated Grain and I have to say it's not my cup of tea. It's cheap and so it should be because it tastes no better than ballpark blends. It has an aguardiente vibe and is hardly recognisable as whisky in my opinion. 20% gin mixed with vodka is kind of the flavour. Each to their own. I'm glad you like it but it ain't for me.

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  2 года назад +2

      Not a problem WT. We all have our own preferences. Knowing some of yours I'm not that surprised that you didn't get on with it. I do agree that it's not instantly recognisable as whisky. It's very different and that's part of it's charm for me. Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers!
