      One of my biggest criticisms of the series so far is how weird it feels to use modern rock with the context and time of the events on screen. Using music similar to this would've made the show a lot cooler imo

      Ray Noble was a British Composer and was well known and established in the UK before he moved to the US in 1934, and this recording was 1935 so I hardly think he was snuck in - He was on a lot of popular radio shows, including Edger Bergen's. He was a guest composer for the summer on some show I listened to in the early 40's. A wonderful composer and musician!

      For German songs (and for some American hits too), this has been done by Max Raabe

  • @StefanSzczelkun

    Nice selection. But I wonder if this music was actually broadcast by the BBC, who had a radio monopoly at the time? The BBC were notoriously conservative. And it was mostly live, as I understand it. They didn't play records... I've been working on music to play and sing to my 92 year old mum who has quite advanced dementia. She grew up in Nottingham from 1926 until she came to London in 1946. First I included American hits until I realised that she might not have heard them until they crossed the pond via films or covers by British artists in the Fifties. There is a video of us doing this on my RUclips channel.
    The current BBC Music Memory site is here:musicmemories.bbcrewind.co.uk

      Stefan, I would be surprised if they never gave any of this air time during it's era. I am sure the BBC would have at least broadcast Jack Payne and Henry Hall who both conducted the BBC Dance Orchestra for a period of time. The songs may have been live but there would have been some of these among the selections I would think. Thank you for sharing the site and for posting a comment! 🙂

    • @StefanSzczelkun
      @StefanSzczelkun 5 лет назад +1

      @@pax41 I've only just got into this so speaking in relative ignorance, but you are right of course about Henry Hall who led the BBC Dance Orchestra from 1932 - 1937 was performing live on radio a lot. I'd love to see his playlist if it survives. Again you're right about Payne and I see from Wikipedia (!) he was regularly on the BBC radio from 1925 until he was succeeded by Hall. Yeh, and they probably played all the hits that were not too 'hot'!
      We played my old mum Hall's 'Teddy Bears Picnic' which has a great arrangement I thought. ruclips.net/video/hL329wLlu_U/видео.html

    TOO MANY COMMERCIALS!!!!! I had to leave, and I will hopefully, remember the title before I put this on again. I don't like putting on some music, then walking away to brush my teeth or something, only to have to listen to an obnoxiously, LOUD, offensive commercial! When will advertisers ever learn to go back to pleasant, sweet tones & calm speech to capture our interest? All they do now, is SHOUT OUT with LOUD beckoning spectacles, not unlike cheap, carnival booth attendants. I can't get them muted fast enough and the last thing I want, is to stare into the strobe light of flashing images they put on. It seems they are doing everything they can to repel interest, rather than attract it. Life is not some cheap, honkytonk parade, and it's high time they understood it!
