    Girl I’m a clinical lab assistant in microbiology and I do some of things you mentioned. From molecular testing (using bio fire, cepheid and oc-auto) to prepping panels to go on the micro scan and maldi. I have a degree in biology and I’m in school now to become a microbiology lab technologist. It’s nice to see someone who looks like me in this field and enjoys it. I’m a bit more excited to complete my program and see where this will take me. Good luck!

    I was smiling through this whole video! I'm so excited for you!!! The "Band of Bands" tshirt is the one for me 🤣❤️Micro has always been my favorite department and it got me so excited when I heard you talk about follow ups. 🎉🥳Girl, get yourself a flow chart for Micro, it was always helpful for me. There's one that starts with GNBs and GPCs and ends with the different antimicrobials that you'd have to put up if you reach sensitivity testing when you're doing follow ups for a patient. Its so helpful and straight forward. You look beautiful in the scrubs. Good luck and God bless you on this nee journey. I'm so excited to have found your page. 💕

    Congratulations on the new job! I'm sure it's super exciting, especially since your first degree was in micro. It's obviously something that's important to you. I'm planning on being a generalist for a couple years, since I worked so hard to learn all the things, I might as well use it some and cement the knowledge and skills. I'm definitely open to specializing in the future, though.
    I've liked Epic Beaker on the core lab side, haven't used it for micro, except for setting up cultures, which is pretty easy. It's very customizable, so once you figure out what you're "reaching" for the most, you can pin those buttons to make them more accessible, plus change up what information, in what order, and what priority it sorts on your outstanding list, as well as what it looks like. It'll take some time to find the right set up, but then you'll be good to go. It's a nightmare as a clinical student though because everybody's screen is different, so you have to keep adapting every time you change preceptors, which for me could be up to three times a day!
    Ugh, and Atlanta traffic is brutal. You hit prime rush hour and I am so sorry about that. That's pretty much the only reason I'm not interested in a job in the city. I hate driving and it's even worse in the traffic.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae  Год назад

      Thank you! I just used your tips for beaker to customize the toolbar. It’s been a little frustrating - knowing what I want to do, but not knowing how to do it in the LIS 😂 And, you are absolutely right about the traffic here. I was so happy to finish with orientation to get out of the rush hours!

      @@domilarae Keep playing with it until you get it just right! Good luck and ask around how everybody does stuff in Beaker because there's more than one way to skin a cat (terrible saying) and some are easier than others.

    I switched to CLS from nursing earlier this year (currently a phlebotomist for experience) and I’m glad I did! Bacterias don’t throw feces at you! Jk, but seriously. If you or anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it!

      As long as you find your best study strategies, you will be fine. Expect to be given a lot of information at once in a short period of time. A solid study plan will help manage the classes and labs.

    Do you recommend that I start off as a general mls then go back to school to specialize in microbiology or go to school for both. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I’m a freshman and just now learning about all of this

      If you major in MLS, you can work in any area without having to go back to school again 😊 You will be prepared to work in the main areas for microbiology, hematology, coagulation, blood bank, urinalysis, and chemistry. Any other specialty area just requires extra job training.

    Hi I have a question on what college did you go to? cause I’m watching your video and you said you live in Atlanta and I am currently a high school student that’s a senior and I’m trying to find the best technical college for a medical technologist. Sorry if the question is so long.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae  Год назад +1

      Augusta University has a great MLS program if you want to go the traditional 4 year degree route to become a medical technologist. The technical colleges would be a cheaper option for a 2 yr degree to be a medical lab technician, it’d be just looking into the closest one near you.

    Hi, congratulations on your new position, and I hope you see further success and growth! It's very encouraging and cool (for lack of a better word) to see black people in stem succeeding. I only had a handful of black peers during undergrad.
    I was hoping to receive some advice (from anyone really 😅). I just finished my degree in biology and I'm looking into online MLS programs. I learned about the MLS field during my last semester of senior year, and I knew it was for me as I enjoyed lab work throughout undergrad. At this moment I'm not a great applicant, but I intend on retaking a couple of courses to improve my GPA. While doing that I also want to get more in person experience at labs. How should I go about contacting current MLS to potentially shadow them, would LinkedIn be a good route? As part of the online program I would have to find my own clinical sites, does anyone have experience in this? Thank you in advance for any responses! ❤️

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I’m not sure if labs generally allow shadowing experiences. It would be best to contact lab directors at your local hospitals - ask them about clinical rotations as well. Another option is finding a job as a medical laboratory assistant
