This video provides with steps to initiate parenteral nutrition in the acute care setting. It also teaches you which laboratory measurements to monitor once the infusion begins!
You will learn about the importance of confirming the infusion site prior to starting PPN or TPN, the appropriate amount of dextrose to provide at the beginning, and the rationale for monitoring blood glucose levels, electrolytes/minerals, liver function tests, triglycerides, and body weight.
Remember, parenteral nutrition is intravenous nutrition.
Even though it's a life-saving therapy, it does come with some significant risks!
Having a protocol in place to get it started safely is a requirement to providing excellent nutrition care. So is having a monitoring protocol to prevent, minimize, and treat any complications.

These steps are consistent with current recommendations from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
I am not 100% sure if they are all consistent with the recommendations from the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, but I would imagine most are.
The two organizations seem to agree on things way more than they disagree.
