I much prefer to see everybody's cam all the time. The crew has great banter and interaction so I simply love to watch them being themselves as they play. Also, to see them plot and think adds to the experience of the gameplay. Besides, the popping of the cams gets distracting.
Agreed
Yup. Too flashy to my liking. Also it has to be insane amounts of work for a minor effect
A huge part of playing just about any card game is seeing the other players' facial response to game actions - we don't use the phrase 'poker face' for no reason! Facial language and unspoken reactions are nearly as important to what players actually say in a card game, especially multiplayer ones. I completely agree, I much prefer to lose a bit of information in the players' hands than lose the main reason why we come here
it is so very distracting :O
The editing seems to be a ton of work for what 95% of the viewers might find distracting at best. I get the idea behind it and in another environment it could definitely work. I do appreciate the editor trying new things but I think the viewing experience is noticeably better with the cameras up at all times! Just my two cents.
Im definitely down for keeping game 1s like this in the final release of the video
Should have just done a BONUS GAME transition 😂😂
@@-homerow-that would've been so great lol..
You just know Phil cut a reanimation target for Portal and is immediately paying for it at the start of game 2
Richard: Runs Mystic Sanctuary
Richard: "I'm running two basics and my mana looks so bad!"
Niutuk- your editing of the first game is really good! You did a great job cutting out the chaff while keeping the banter and relevant gameplay. Definitely a good way to speed games up if there’s a two-game episode!
Totally agree with the one ring house ban, think it’s way to powerful and feel like most weeks it’ll be more warping than the other house banned cards like sol ring
I like keeping the first game because it gives context, it's fun to know, and stats episode lol.
"There is a limit to my degeneracy" is by far my favorite Phil quote so far
I didn't know Magic Online would allow you to use the Nephilim as commanders.
It's probably a custom format.
MTGO allows you to play "freeform", a way for anything goes, nothing is banned, formatless play, since pretty much forever. That's mostly used for super casual play or for outside-organized tournaments, both via direct challenges. I don't think there's any form of open queue or league for it, or if there is, it's not very popular. However, those direct challenge freeform events (historically organized via forums or reddit, nowadays discord) have birthed a bunch of decently popular fringe-formats, like pauper, penny dreadful or various no-banlist events.
The Option to run freeform commander games, however, is a pretty new inclusion. The fact that that is now possible is at least partially reason for the goldfish crew to go and do interesting Format-Twist rule zero games like this one, and this is probably only the first of many semi-regular videos in this vein.
For me the new cams are super distracting (but maybe i will get used to it with time) , and i like seeing the faces while they are thinking and ploting
I've said it before but the intro is so good now. I love not having the entire surprise spoiled at the start. Its fun to be surprised as new things are drawn and played.
Definitely prefer seeing all the face cams at once, love watching everyone’s reactions during parts of the game. Feels more natural
Great episode, now that magic online has custom rulesets Id love to see you do another no banlist commander or at least altered banlist, I’ve enjoyed your banlist podcasts in the past and I’d like to see what you’d do with it now
I really like this change that people's facecams are actually not displayed while they're not talking, so you can see handsizes and stuff. I'm sure it's a lot more work to edit this way, but I think it's definitely worth it & really adds to the video!
I am in the camp of keeping the cams on screen. I do like watching everyone reaction as they all play. When they flash in and out my brain gets distracted. Top notch editing as always. We appreciate you!
If you do this again, I would love to see the Lorwyn elemental Incarnations (guile, hostility, vigor, etc)
Ooh, I second that! Such cool cards
oh yeah, the notions would be pretty dope :D
I’ve always agreed that these cards should’ve been legendary. If someone rolls up to my table and wants to play one as their commander I let them, so long as they then act like the card has the legend text on them. Ie, no copying them with normal spells or reanimating them with cards that explicitly say “can’t target legendary creatures”, can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Edit: Upon seeing Tomer’s deck, I’d probably exclude ink-treader due to its absurdity
Yeah, Zada is already good, she doesn’t need 3 additional colors to abuse.
Actually if I remember right they admitted they're not legendary cuz they forget about it
Surprise Niuttuc at the start is 11/10.
I love this and would be so hype to see more freeform commanders :)
I actually love being able to see all the cameras at the same time, means you catch a lot of reactions to things. The cameras constantly flashing in and out was distracting too
Richard: “I can’t kill his stupid ink treader”
Gee Richard, if only you played SPOT REMOVAL lol, your policy of never playing removal really bites you today lol
Richard won lol
Not game 1@@lordofgarbageprogenitoroft4147
@@lordofgarbageprogenitoroft4147 ...not in the game where he said that though?
Extremely weird comment from people soo mad that Richard thinks swords is trash that they didn’t even realise Richard literally won the second game. Don’t think he cared much about you crying WhErEs YoUr SwoRdS tO plOwShaRes
@@adamhenwood1114 You mean the second game where multiple people had spot removal to slow down Tomer including Richard, extremely weird to completely ignore that fact but I guess cherrypicking helps your narrative better.
Now I really want to see one of those scryfall random weeks, but you actually get to use the card as your commander.
I personally prefer seeing the face cams for the whole game, it's fun watching the crew interact!
My playgroup all built decks with the Forgotten Realms Class cards as Rule 0 commanders. It was pretty fun.
Oo! That sounds very interesting. Might bring that up with my playgroup…
I’m not so sure about making these honorary commanders because that first game was… woah
Ink Treader is definitely crazy.
The others are cool and generally not broken though
I personally prefer to see everyone cause I love to see your reactions to nonsense :)
Also I’m sure Mr. Editor would love to do less work for the editing XD
Lastly free firm commander is awesome!!!! Let the jank ideas flooooooow🎉
Phil, chainer doesn’t need you to discard a creature card to cast a creature from the graveyard. Any card can be discarded :)
So cool they allow this on MTGO now. Does anyone know if there's plans to implement a "No Banlist" variation at some point? I get that it can be very degenerate, but when everyone plays degeneracy it can be fun content.
They have like a fully customizable option now. So, yes.
You can play no ban list in freeform if you want to.
Yes, in this case, showing both games was a good thing - the actions and comments in game 2 would have made little sense without seeing game 1 - great editing, as always, editor!
Wow, big zada. sheesh that was a game 1. Seth mocking Crim for having so much spot removal, saying he wishes he was there, had me laughing so hard.
I would love to see more commander gameplay that’s edited like the beginning of this episode. It was really great. Kudos to your editor.
I feel like every week no one makes Richard have it and every week Richard wins. Im starting to believe in Crim.
Yea but usually Crim is to busy focusing on pushing a 3v1 against Tomer then gets annoyed when Tomer doesn't focus on Richard.
I'm not sure if goldfish did a video on the full eldraine set but I'm sure Richard is very excited to have a commander that reads turn to find out sang dagger every single game
“Have you considered just dying?” Lol best quote of the game
Tomer saying “I want something that puts stun counters on lands. Or would that be too much” followed by instant rejection of the idea was hilarious
I will say that Seth outplayed himself. In every universe where Seth doesn't make Richard have it, he was at 0.0% chance to win.
Those nephilim showing off were really cool. I appreciated. Didn't see when I read the effects they could go that deep...
This has been my favorite episode of clash in the past 2 years. All due to the editing. Earned a like a follow and a comment from a decades long lurker type.
As I was scrolling at RUclips and I came across the video, I definitely read it as Neapolitan commanders and naturally I was like “oh I like ice cream”
I recently caught up on a year or so of episodes, and I have to say, any time Tomer is on the Clash Ons are top tier.
The card draw denial in the second game was hilarious!
I haven't watched much of the video yet, but I know that this style of editing with having the cams pop in, I think it can make you lose out on a lot of moments. I know Phil especially can be quite funny with some of his facialexpressions without saying much. And besides all of them are being filmed at all time. Its worth testing though, I'll probably edit this comment later to finish what I thought.
EDIT: I see, it seems to only have been that way in the first game.
We appreciate the editing!
I like the popping up facecams, it helps me assess more of the board at a glance, which is how I end up watching most of CClash (so listening mostly, until things get extra spicy)
I like the change to facecam display. It makes it easier to keep track of who's turn it is and track the conversation.
I hope y’all do more Rule 0 stuff, it’s super cool!
The One Ring is soft-banned in at least one of the groups I play in, and I expect to have a conversation about it in the other ones, shortly.
I like the quick 1st game. It helped me know that I in fact do want to watch the 2nd game cuz I want to see more of these decks
MTG online lets you use non-legendary creatures as commanders?
Yeah, that's all I was thinking about
Yes, you can now set up custom rules for Commander when playing on Magic Online!
@@MTGGoldfishCommanderThat's awesome!
@@MTGGoldfishCommander you should do a game where each of you picks an interesting non legendary to make a deck around. Would open unique mechanics and play styles. Like that Naya from coldsnap Tamanoa, Malestrom Archangel, Ankle Shanker, Havengul Lich, ect.
Godhead of Awe was actually my first commander, I asked to play it and house rules were fine. It's unique, making everything a 1/1 and opened up fun plays. And my justification was that Godhead of Awe is literally a demigod of Shadowmoor so it in theory should be legendary.
Commander is a casual format. House rules are always more important than "official" rules.
@@MTGGoldfishCommanderYou’d think they would have let people do that from the start lol
I think leaving in game 1 was smart. Thanks fornthe editor note
Thxs for the pop up at the beginning mister editor!
On this week of "Punt or Bluff?" We Are the Rules Committee! Will Seth embrace the inner Hazezon in all of us? or will Phil show us the secrets of ancient Yore? Tune-in to find out!
You're a treasure Josh
Phil is so good at making thumbnail faces it's crazy
I know, right? Dude pulled a blue steel and landed it lol...
...damn I'm old!
@@robertbryce3225 🤣
Been trying to build a nephilim battle box for a while. Just finished a hard week at work, so excited to give this a watch!
I think Isshin in Phil's deck could be very cool! Especially if you play spells that put creatures in the graveyard. ;P
Oh right, good call ☝
If Phil keeps telling us the legends of his Marneus Calgar deck he better bring it out for a clash if it ever comes to mtgo.
Oh I will once I get the chance 🤩 Too bad there are still some key cards missing like Ethereal Investigator, Minn and Alandra. Almost all the "When draw second card = Create a token" cards in its colors 😓
The cheeky Phil in the intro, I love it!
Wanted to say, i love the dedication to showeling carss that are currently being metioned, definitely against the popping in and out cameras though
Phil wants to put stun counters on lands: meet Freyalise's Winds.
Oof had to google that one, what a brutal card 😅
This week Seth finds out that sorcery speed Teferi's Protection is actually not a great idea most of the time
Awesome editing! Perfect!
When your favourite nephilim is the only one not being played 🥲
I was surprised you didn’t pre-ban Tomer’s Commander because of how utterly broken it is lol
I was considering not running it but I figured that it would be better to showcase the real potential of Nephilim since it's the only time we'll ever play them. Ink is definitely the strongest of the bunch, but I expected that Yore-Tiller and Glint-Eye would do some busted things too :P
I like seeing everyone's cameras
@Phil I'm not sure if it would have changed anything really, but Chainer says discard a card, not a creature card. You can discard anything to activate it's ability. might have opened up a few more lines
I get where Phil is coming from by not running entombs. I’m brewing a Karador deck right now and I’d rather get cards into my graveyard in a creative way. I’m concerned that if I run entomb I’m just gonna see the same bombs every time and not enjoy the breadth of my 99.
I did the same thing with Meren once upon a time. And I actually cut Entomb from Muldrotha; I play Gravebreaker Lamia but found Entomb itself doing a lot less than I would have thought.
Everything can be your commander week please.
Idk how I feel about the cams coming and going
It's very chaotic
The amount of punts from Richard and Phil at the end of that second game... though somehow I don't think any of them actually mattered.
As it turns out spot removal is good actually wow
Their creature type being "Nephilim" implies they are half God half human by most fantasy standards I do believe. 🤔
Quandrix apprentice is a REALLY good card in simic spells decks like Jadzi, cuz the amount of filtering they both can do together is insane, and your deck keeps getting thinned of all lands and so jadzi can just hit all spells and keep storming off without a worry
Funny to hear Richard recommending "just Swords it the turn it comes down" when he's constantly decrying running more than 1-2 spot removal spells in a deck. You'll never have it if you follow all his advice.
14:44 I agree to do the speed up that just happened.
I do miss seeing all cameras at all times though.
Phil, if you cut all the entomb effects you really need to increase the target count. I see 12 in the list, with ways to put them into the yard that is more than enough, but without I would be pushing for more like 20, so that you always have a decent chance of having them in the opening hand.
That's the real reason that people run the entomb effects, it allows you to run more effective copies of reanimate targets without going way overboard on the mana curve.
Reanimator with no entomb effects or self-mill is certainly a choice
I feel Phil with the no Tutor take. It makes some Interactions to easy.
This episode made me curious about how many basics I tend to run and... well, for sure always run at least one for each color you have is my philosophy; other than that, I tend to run around 6 or 7 in my 5 colors decks, 8 for 4 colors, 10 for 3 colors, 14 for 2 colors and 20 for monocolored. And my one colorless deck has 7 wastes. I always try to run enough that if I had all of my basics on the battlefield and none of the nonbasics I wouldn't feel too pressed for mana.
Personally I run at minimum 10 basics in my decks, usually closer to 15 on average. I think people don't run enough basics and take any opportunity to run things like Price of Progress or Primal Order.
I wouldn’t mind seeing one ring through the end of the season and maybe next, but after that it probably needs to go.
im like obsessed with the jim murray sand token so i'm really glad about this
The Sand Warrior Tokens are probably part of the Promotional set, they used to have Tokens as Prizes, it is where I got my 1/1 Kamigawa spirit token.
I for one loved Phil's hipster reanimation deck
Phil and Tomer are on such opposite sides of the casual deck building paradigm
Phil spending the whole video talking about entomb lol
my playgroup is planning on doing this, there are 5 of us so we plan to each build a deck around a unique Nephilim, I'm just worried that Ink-Treader will end up being the way it was for your games, where it will either combo off as soon as it lands and win, or it will get removed every time it lands and they won't be able to play the game.
Thank god we got a commander clash without crim!
Like 5 mins in and I enjoy the change 👌🏾👌🏾
20 minute game at start was def worth the watch to see how gross tomers deck was otherwise it would have been alot more confusing
No.1 like Finally got one!!!! love your guys content, keep it up.
I want to see The One Ring house banned next season. Mostly just to hear what it was replaced with in practically every deck.
I suspect there is likely many more synergistic and/or flavorful one-of-fun-of type cards that would take the slot
"Anakin hates this deck"
Is it just sand or did you include younglings?
Seth showing the exact reason why you don't Tef-Pro in the main phase and pass. lol
Richard, Ugin is a Bolt on his plus. Phil was at 3 life.
I very much prefer watching everyones face reactions even when theyre not talking. Great job tho editor!
In regards to the color identity thing, I think that was in relation to the commander deck cycle more than the Nephilhim, and happened because of the Nephilhim having weak identities. Saskia is defined by her lack of blue: she's aggressive and direct, pointing at a player and saying they die. K&T are defined by their lack of black; where black is selfishness and ambition they're generosity. Some worked better than others - Atraxa stands out as a pretty general one - but that was the idea and it was how they justified designing that cycle after the failures of the Nephilhim.
Ravnica city of guilds was the okayest cop story ever!
If it makes you feel better about making a reanimator deck without tutors, Phil, I have an Erebos Bleak-Hearted deck that has only 1 aristocrat effect and it's Bubbling Cauldron... Bc it's a Bubbling Cauldron deck! Very funny, very low powered.
I think the ring is a problem if you can tutor for it every game or bounce and copy it. It's like tef's protection, it can get a bit repetitive, but it also makes any situation not an absolute, which can be nice if it doesn't happen every single time
This opens up potential other non legendary/band commanders... Could you guys do a week with the shadowmoor spirt avatars as commanders? (Awe of the godhead, deity of scars etc)
23:17 I don't think design said that. IIRC, it's a thing Josh Lee Kwai said, that Rhystic Studies repeated, that's now in the fandom. If you talk to Maro he concurs that 4c has basically no identity, and if you look at 4 color cards, literally none of them follow that design philosophy. Flavorwise though? 100%.
