The problem was that Stallone was acting far better than what the script called for; it was like he was in a completely different movie from everyone else, especially Banderas, who was just way too over-the-top. Banderas' role should have been played more subdued and sinister by someone like John Malkovich, not unlike his role in In The Line of Fire.
Honestly I'm shock at the revelations in this video. I really enjoyed the movie, all characters were played to great effect, believable and relatable. An old assassin, fending off the new blood whilst trying to change his ways and be the hero. The flashbacks worked well to fill in story blanks. I'd be interested as to how the original shift might have fared.
I like this film very much. Also it seems wrong Donner changes script when 'The Matrix' came out. But now, I think Donner was right about the script. I consider this is one of best Stallone movie in 90's. At least everyone who around me enjoyed this movie when it came out. I didn't heard anything bad about it
@@egads3696 It's not a bad movie, but it deviated a lot from the original vision, the the point where the Wachowski's have said it missed it's mark. Same way that Natural Born Killers, although still great the way it came out, was originally a completely different tone.
I remember this film being an entertaining feature. The main standout has to be Banderas as Miguel Bain, he is such a fun and energetic antagonist. He was almost like a more deranged version of his other character "El Mariachi" from Desperado.
It wasn’t a failure. I enjoyed the film. Better than today’s films. Should’ve had more action and violence. But Stallone and Banderas were great pairing 😅
@@TheSystem030 It either makes money at the theater or doesn't. It doesn't matter how much money it makes down the road. If a movie loses money during its theatrical run then studios consider it a failure. Period.
@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat I have seen it ones back in the days but I dont remember anything about it, thanks for reminding me for it. I have to hunt it down. One really badass movie from late 80's is Extreme Prejudice 😊
I was 12 when I saw this in the theater with my parents. I've always liked this one. Back in the 1990s, it was the common norm for most critics to bash Stallone in most his efforts. I think they still felt burned by Rocky V and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. He got off to a rough start in that decade, and in the decade to follow. But 1993 was a big year for Sly. Cliffhanger and Demolition Man. Then The Specialist came the following year. Which can be considered good or bad depending on who you ask. Personally, I enjoy it. James Woods rules. But after that, 1995 was supposed to be huge for Stallone. Both Judge Dredd and Assassins flopped, and Stallone didn't plat any hard edge action roles for like five years, until Get Carter, which also flopped. Thank the lord for 2006's Rocky Balboa.
Get Carter was always doomed. The original is perfect. Reading Jack's return home presently. I honestly didn't think he could be worse than Caine's character portrayal... This guy is a nightmare... Ted Lewis even suggests some incestuous connotations to his lead...
Now that you said it, it would have been cool to see both Characters reversed. If i remember correctly Sylvester Stallone never played the Bad guy in any of his movies, this could of have been so interesting.
I really enjoyed this film I don’t see it any different that a lot of 80/90 action films, and compared to the Hollywood woke garbage that it’s produced now , this movie would deserve a Oscar .
"critics" that said that rings of power is good 🤣🤣🤣 . Dont care what those clueless peoples say i enjoyed this movie allot, and Banderas was exceptionally good in this one, one of his best performances.
I love this film! The action is fun and the tone is just on the right side of self-serious. Banderas brings a totally unique energy and attitude to a part that could have been generic and forgettable, I still quote him to this day! This was also the first film to see Stallone play that sad aging hero archetype, which became his new brand. The film acknowledges in a meta-way that Stallone was getting older (and that he had a hunger for a career shift); his character has grown disillusioned with his role in the world and how he made his fortune, and wanting to move onto something new. This film paved the way for roles like Cop Land and the last Rocky Balboa. It's an entertaining, easily rewatchable 90s action movie, with just enough flourishes of eccentricities and quirk (that Donner is known for bringing to the table) that it holds up well compared to a lot of the movies critics of the era were comparing it to. Even the climax is different for this type of thing - it's all about drawing out the suspense rather than indulging in the action/violence. It might have failed at the box office, but it will always be a winner to me!
This is the perfect film to demonstrate why you should track down original drafts of scripts for films you like. What could have been is almost always better than what you got. Shane Black's scripts are brilliant. I highly recommend tracking down the original script to "I Am Legend". Also, compared to "The Specialist", this film is a masterpiece. I don't understand the hate. This is a solid movie.
Seen in on the theater then. Always liked the movie ever since. One of the best lines and Banderas is a bad ass. Still got the VHS and the LaserDisc from back in the day.
Everything about this movie is awesome. One of Banderas's best performances. I noticed you didn't bring up the video stats. The great thing with the 90s, if you don't sell enough seats, you can make it up with tapes and disks.
Back in those days Blockbuster was big so rentals, VHS and DVD sales can add up to more than box office and has saved 💣 like water world so it made a profit.
It would’ve been cool if Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wesley Snipes had done the movie. But Sylvester Stallone and Antonio banderas were perfect. Also I would have loved to see Mel Gibson act in the Stallone role and direct assassins.
Its a fun action movie but yes flipping the characters could have helped. You know Sly as the weary hardened old assassin with no conscience and Banderas as the bad guy with conscience might have also helped to make a darker version of Assassins . But i still enjoyed the movie and i still do if I get to watch it again. Some action scenes of this movie were copied in Bollywood action movies later on in 90s itself. So yes it was a great movie. See critics are too hard to impress and they really don't enjoy a movie , they just judge everything to a point where they become dead on the inside while watching a movie. After a while critics opinion doesn't even matter anymore because the movie becomes a cult because didn't get much audience during its release but over the years it has garnered a lot of loyal fan-following . The Assassins may have a few flaws in it but it's still engaging to watch the chase, conflict and the back&forth between sly and Antonio. They both carry the film and make it fun to watch.
If you are going to remake films, here is one that is prime for an upgrade. Quit updating movies that worked. Try rehabbing movies that were riddled with production problems.
Im 41.. i remember going to the theaters to see this because obviously stallone but also banderas because of desperado.. i thought the concept was good but the movie just dragged... the beginning was good but then it just got slow and dull
I remember seeing posters of it back in the day but honestly can't remember the story or if I've seen it so it can't be that good. 😂 But desperado was a hit so Antonio was big star and Stallone was on a hot streak with cliffhanger and demolition man so this movie should have been a winner. I'm surprised Wachowski wrote the script but wonder how much of the original story made it into the movie.
Calling that it can go toe to toe with se7en and silence of the lambs is a stretch It could have been..more in line with Leon the professional with right director .
I liked this movie although the logic was screwed up and absurd. What was the purpose of recovering a digital file on a diskette? Something that was initially copied from a satellite transmission and could be infinitely copied? Even ignoring this point, what was the purpose of two assassins sent on the mission when either, if unopposed, could easily complete the mission as originally ordered?
This guy is a hater. I loved this movie growing up and still enjoy it. Antonio stole the show as Miguel. Don't listen to this guy, watch the movie if you like cheesy 80's and 90's action films like I do.
@KinoReel-c4f I did, it was a rhetorical question, as no matter what the original script or cast were supposed to be, the end result that we got is a masterpiece.
I thought it was successful; go figure. I still liked the movie, but being an early fan of "Moonlighting," I could not help but notice some similarities with that series episode, "Gunfight at the So So Corral." Your description of the original script plays out like the TV episode almost identical abesent the Russian reveal in the climax, with the old assassin being the 'good guy' and the young assassin being the "bad guy." @KinoReel-c4f of course I did. You say it could have been better from the beginning but they had to make it with Richard Donner and Sly who was the last choice. The movie failed like Judge Dredd and Stop etc like JCVD movies. Assassins is a great movie
