The year is 1996. I was 9 years old, and had received a new game for my birthday: Super Mario RPG. Little did I know how much this game would have an impact on my life.
It quickly became one of my favorite games. I remember finding some pictures of the 3D character renders (Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Peach) on AOL, printed them out and hung them on my wall.
Super Mario RPG was also when I started to realize that I really liked game music. My mom helped me record some of the songs onto cassette tapes by using a boombox with a record function and holding it up to the TV speaker while I let songs play. To this day, Super Mario RPG still has one of my favorite soundtracks, I've always ranked it as #2 behind only Final Fantasy VI. I even loved it enough to cover the entire soundtrack in one gigantic mega-medley back in 2012.
Fast forward almost 3 entire decades since release. Super Mario RPG had seemingly long been left behind by Nintendo. Fans of the game had been clamoring for some sort of SMRPG content, or even acknowledgement, for years. The best we got was a quick Geno cameo sprite in a Mario & Luigi game, some character moveset references (Mario and Peach, Wario's Booster punch) and the Geno Mii outfits in Smash Bros. The latest of which, a late Geno Mii outfit release in Smash Ultimate, seemed to be the final nail in the coffin, as there had been high hopes in the SMRPG community for a full Geno character inclusion (I commemorated this tragic event with the release of "Sad Song" in 2021).
Then on June 21st, 2023, something magical happened.

And..... from what we've seen so far, it's looking BEAUTIFUL!
I've never in my life been more stoked for anything revealed in a Nintendo Direct, or any game-related showcase for that matter. I'm thrilled that not only will us older SMRPG fans be able to relive one of our favorite games, but younger folks who never got a chance to give it a try will now be able to as well.
And now, I begin my quest to remind the world that the Super Mario RPG soundtrack is much, much more than just Beware the Forest's Mushrooms.

Myself and SolarZero both played different mods for this footage, he did Super Mario RPG: Revolution while I did Super Luigi RPG: Star Powered! Each offers a different experience on the beloved SMRPG and there's a lot more beyond them; there's a whole SMRPG modding community! If you haven't played SMRPG before, you owe it to yourself to try it. And if you have, then try out one of the many mods for something fresh while you wait. November cannot come soon enough!

And this is a phenomenal way to celebrate such an occasion, this cover sounds freaking spectacular!! It's always an absolute treat whenever you cover a Super Mario RPG song, they go _incredibly_ well with your style! I can tell you have a ton of fun making them too :)
Also reading that description and seeing the text in the outro just puts a massive smile on my face, I can tell you have so much pure, unbridled joy over this remake and it's so freaking wholesome :>

Can’t wait for November 17th, when Jonny will release the remake of his old SMRPG medley that now includes every single song and sound effect in the entire game, including unused songs and remakes of songs he’s already covered.
Man, i always like Mario's RPG games, the Mario & Luigi saga and thus game here were absolute masterpieces. We need more of that!

I feel like this was done on impulse to the news of the Super Mario RPG remake, and I am HERE FOR IT!!!
I will forever associate this boss theme with Mario fighting a spellcasting wedding cake. Excellent remix, GaMetal. The wait for the remake's release will be a tough one, but there's still plenty of games to keep us occupied until then.
Ah yes the cake.... This is only rpg I can think of where one of the most dangerous things that people can get stuck on is a wedding cake.

Fantastic remix pick, Super Mario RPG remake at the recent Nintendo Direct was my #1 highlight and I haven't played the game in many years. Coincidentally, I've been listening to the remake version of this track on loop and it's pretty good, but I like this remix more because it has callbacks to the SNES version. Looking forward to another playthrough and more Super Mario RPG GaMetal remixes in the future! I am hoping this means we will see more official Geno content from Nintendo as well.

Seems like just yesterday I played the original version of this game at 12 going on 13 years old. This was the game that closed out elementary school and opened up high school for me. Love hearing it in this format. :D

So many SMRPG remixes are fails because of how weirdly chipper the music is, which makes it hard to do anything with... but THIS is incredibly well-done. Literally Smithy-jaw-dropping. Exception blending of metal elements with the original flavor of the song.

@@KelpTheGreat It's about 17 hours, took me 13. Its one of the easier RPGs for the time.
Granted I played on an emulator, I used fast forward when I did the experience exploit and grinded til I had everyone's strongest powers. My friend also gave me some strats for some bosses as I played.
Mario RPG is the first game that made me cry. Maybe those tears knew that we would never see our two new friends ever again...
... They are back now. And I'm crying again. :')

I started playing this game MANY years ago during the whole "Beware of the Forest Mushroom" craze. Let's Players like Chuggaaconroy and Nintendo Capprisun were playing it. I bought it on my Wii and played all the way to the Forest Maze.
Didn't finished it after that for some reason. I am more of a Mario and Luigi fan. But now, there is no excuse to not only relive the classic days of the original, but to FINALLY beat the game fully for the first time

I honestly share your sentiment so wholeheartedly. This game to me, ( I was seven and still have memories of playing it on our old tube tv), was unlike any other game I had played up till that point. I'm buying a switch because of this announcement, the final nail in the coffin. Jonny your music is astounding and please keep up the good work. This and Never turn Back are absolute hits, and thats just as of late!
