  • Have you ever wondered why we spend so much time wasting free time on patterns of stimulation that only mimic reality? What does "patterns of stimulation that only mimic reality" even mean?
In this video, I discuss the topic of wasting free time as presented in Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's famous book "Flow", pages 162-163.
The main argument is that we spend most of our free time watching people pretend to do meaningful actions (think TV, Netflix, etc.) instead of performing the activities ourselves. Spending our free time meaningfully is hard because free time in unstructured and requires great effort to be transformed into something meaningful.
Let's discuss what we can do to change our existing patterns into new patterns full of meaning.

Okay, but why must we always be productive? There has to be a middle way.

@jasonsands5881 - Agreed! Interesting enough, much of Dr. Mihaly's research on flow (or optimal experience) revolves around creativity. Something that is often done in leisure and isn't easily quantifiable as 'productive' or 'beneficial' the way something like money is.
I ask myself this same question all the time, and it is something I will continue to explore in future videos. Thanks for the watch and comment :).

Not necessarily productive, but deeply and satisfyingly engaged in life.

Well, you certainly nailed it. After decades of working in the corporate world I saved up enough to take a time off and really pursue my dreams. After ONE YEAR of essentially free time, I have much less to show for it than I imagined. The reason I believe is captured right here in your talk: imposing structure on free time is actually hard work. I’m very deadline-driven. Without externally imposed deadlines, it is a challenge not to just sit around watching RUclips for little hits of dopamine that mimic reality. Hopefully self knowledge is power, and I can improve. Your video is excellent and also makes me want to check out that Flow book. Thank you!

Absolutely! I fully understand this. I've done a similar thing - quit my corporate job in 2022, moved to Japan, followed my dream of being a global citizen and a digital nomad. All great things, but extremely difficult to execute.
"Hopefully self knowledge is power, and I can improve." -I'll be keeping this line with me. Keep at it! You've got my vote :).

That book hasn’t been topped in over 15 years for me. I should finally start taking it seriously and apply what it says.

I've found this true for a handful of books from the early 2000s. Lots of good stuff that we simply forget about and move on from. Gotta slow down and internalize it!

In my experience, the quickest way to achieve the flow state is ropeflow. You’re totally focused on the skills until you master them, then both body and mind are free. You move effortlessly and unconsciously.

Heck yeah! Juggling was this for me once upon a time. I've been working on body weight calisthenics lately. The constant movement part is different, but the reward at achieving the goal is immense.

This should go viral. Great reflection on an urgent topic.
Reminded me of my night time philosophical ponderings by the ping pong table with a dear friend. A ritual both of us used to appreciate 3 years ago, during our time living in a university dormitory in Southern Estonia…
Keep up the content and don‘t stop sharing your original perspective Mike.
    Thank you!

My grandmother in her early 90's enjoyed doing these. She is gone now but we all have one of her "masterpieces" on the wall. I suspect this painting has sentimental value.

An excellent, well-put-together video essay on an important topic! I could not empathize more with your struggles around free time and I know millions of other people out there feel the same way. We've gotten to a point where we don't have to spend all our time working just to survive and now we don't know what to do with ourselves!!
I like what you say about the "double edged sword" of RUclips; I've learned so much valuable information and gotten so much out of the content on this platform, but I've also wasted countless hours on mindless garbage. It's like being a kid in a candy store! Hard to keep your eye on the prize. Your content seems worthwhile though, keep up the good work!!

Ok here's my take. If you go to work, provide for your family. Then then in my opinion. Having some leisure time is ok. It doesn't have to be productive because you've already went to work for the day being productive.

  • @geddon436

Which new hobbies or purpose of life did you discover?

    • @MikeIvisonJr
      @MikeIvisonJr  2 месяца назад

@geddon436 - For hobbies, I'd say mostly rediscovering old hobbies and finding more intrinsic value in them than before. Video editing and filming would be new hobbies that I've discovered to help me create rather than consume.
For purpose of life, I could go on for awhile. But...a main area of focus would be community. Most of my life, I have de-valued community in favor of myself. I used my introvert personality as justification for this. Recently, I've discovered the limits of living selfishly in this way and started investing more of my time in other people, in-person and online. This book and many others have influenced this change.
If you're interested, I discuss this a little more in this video (ruclips.net/video/RqDWtfnD8rM/видео.html) via the concept of "Fathering", or "What can I Give vs. What Can I Get."
Thanks for the insightful question :).
