DAMAGED Old Chest of Drawers: Jaw Dropping Restoration

  • This Malcolm mahogany chest of drawers was in need of a lot of repair and refinishing. Scratches, failing finish, chipped and missing veneer. It had to be scraper, stripped, stained in certain areas, and the veneer patched. This was a lot of work but totally worth it for that amaaaaazing reveal at the end.

absolutely stunning, Angie!!! I love that you didn't change anything on this one, kept the wood hardware, didn't really change the color, just gave it a good refresh. The felt in the top drawer gives it just the pop it needs! Always love watching you work!!!

The furniture makers in the old days were brilliant with veneer. Those drawers are gorgeous. It's a good thing you pointed out the patch because I wouldn't have been able to find it otherwise. The cherry colored lacquer is a beautiful choice. Rich, but not too dark. You hit it out of the park, Angie.

Jerry and I had a difficult evening. He's a long-haired guinea pig and keeping him clean, poo-free, neat and reasonably tidy can be an effort for both of us. So after a protracted session with wipes, scissors, brushes etc. we were in need of recuperation and, consequently, thrilled when your soothing video popped up in our feed. Jerry did question the presence of the cats early on as he couldn't work out how or why you'd want make another cat condo from the chest. He was reassured as the video progressed and excited by a new Oddie's product - always a highlight for him. We both thought the red felt liner set the whole thing off. Keep 'em comin'.

I can only imagine the maintenance required for a long haired gentleman like Jerry. One would assume, with his discerning judgement, that he's a tad particular on how he is groomed. I'm so glad the video came out at the right time for both of you to relax to and that he enjoyed the new product! Thank you both, as always, for the thoroughly enjoyable comment. ❤️

“Needed some work done” has to be the understatement of the year! Saying it’s beautiful is the second understatement, it’s regal looking! I’m a long time fan of oak which I know is a common wood but it reminds me of furniture in my grandparents house. They also had some very dark furniture and after watching your channel, I think it may have been mahogany but not anywhere near as gorgeous as this. Mahogany is becoming a very close second favorite especially when it’s refinished by you! 👌👌👌💕💕💕

I sometimes comment to RUclipsrs that they should think about wearing a mask (and their poor dog is sometimes nearby) when I watch them spray paint in an enclosed space. You're in your basement and probably your furnace is too so it's actually going to the entire household. That seems scary to me.

Wow, Angie! That dresser turned out so beautiful! Your meticulousness and attention to detail sets you apart as a furniture restorer. Thank you for the education on the importance of using respirators and showing us the air pollution detection gadget as well as the filter system you are using. I think of all the years my parents did furniture stripping and restoring, using a big vat of stripper followed by another vat of neutralizer - and never using any type of respirator or even a mask! We sanded and used aerosol type finish all the time - and no masks! They don't have any lung issues and they are both 80, but I think they are just lucky. I am 60 now and have my fingers crossed! I love that you emphasized safety. It also applies to artists and crafters, because paints and solvents as well as glues etc. can all negatively affect our health. I have COPD and luckily it isn't severe, and I'm 79, so it probably won't be an issue for the rest of my life, but when I think back at my oil and acrylic painting, and DIY, I cringe at how careless I was. Be safe should be rule number ONE for us all. And, of course, a beautiful job as always Angie. 😊💕👍🏻

Goodness, I am always in awe of your sixth sense on when to pain and when to change as little as possible with these pieces. Your artistic senses are off the charts! This renovation was such a rewarding watch!

Love the stunning reveal! I never expect less than phenomenal gorgeousness and you definitely deliver! I also appreciate that you explain what you’re doing and why- I’m only fixing furniture that’s been neglected here at my home, but you not only give me the courage and confidence to tackle restorations needed- you help me understand how to do it correctly. Thank you so much!
(And I think I recognized Jon Cesaro from Lincoln St. Woodworks? Yes, I follow woodworking channels, too. My dad left us with planes, squares, and doo-dads that we’re learning how to use. Who knew woodworking and restoring furniture would grant me inner peace?! 💖)

That crotch wood veneer is absolutely gorgeous! Marvelous job as usual. Proud to see you got out and about at the conference and mingled with folks. It's always good to push yourself, and I say this as an extreme Wallflower myself LOL

My eyes couldn’t see the color difference in the grain even when it was pointed out.😂And that grain is beautiful. One of the more unusual looking I’ve seen you do. Terrific job!

That is stunning. I knew you would make it most beautiful, as always. Thanks for your tips on staining and spraying. You only get one shot at life so take good care of yourself and you will last a long time. Thanks again, Angie, for a video that was fun to watch and informative. Love the kittens. Much love Dave and Amy.

What an outstanding restoration Angie. It is absolutely gorgeous. I think you have one of the nicest and cleanest workshops (minus a spray booth😔) of anyone out there. It always looks so NEAT AND TIDY. The housekeeper in me applauds you👏👏👏👏👏!

I don't know why, but I just love the reveal music. It makes me happy every time! Thx for the reality check re: safety. I worked in another field--horticulture--and was cautious but not quite enough. I've fortunately gotten a clean bill of health after a bout of cancer, but I know now that I was pushing the limits.

That was miraculous! With regard to health protection, I am glad you do not spray finish outdoors. It shows tremendous regard for avoidance of overspray toxicity to animals, nature and nearby neighbors who could be affected as well. I wish all refinishers were as considerate as you! Stay well.

Thanks so much for highlighting the safety stuff. I got a nasty sinus infection from spraying paint outside. Obviously still managed to inhale some. My nostrils haven’t been the same since! :(
