I just noticed you’re wearing a wedding ring. If you recently got married, congratulations! And thanks for your videos. It’s enjoyable to watch the transformations. ☺️
I've own every Lane Acclaim table except for the dinning room table. Great find and it turn out so well imo, but I see your point in there being a more even tone.Thank you for posting your work, it's really good.
It's a beautiful restoration. People who are collecting and love the Lane Acclaim will be very happy with this table as it is. I have a side table in this decor and this dining table is perfect. Your judgement is spot on. BRAVO!
If I had my own house and needed furniture I would be purchasing everything from you that you would sell. No one's perfect but your level of professionalism is more than to my liking for the end product.
I went back and looked at the beginning again…wow. What a difference. I assume you refinished the leaf, too? It didn’t look like it was in the table at the end, and I didn’t see you working on it. I only own one Acclaim piece - a square end table - but I love seeing all the different shapes and sizes. I follow four people on RUclips that repair/restore/refinish furniture, and I’m always struck by your knowledge and experience. My husband was a custom cabinet maker for over 40 years, and he always grumbles when he sees people doing things that they really don’t know how to do. He never says a thing when I’m watching your videos!
My husband is a master carpenter. I hate when we are invited to friends new homes. I always have to tell him to keep his trap shut while we're there. Otherwise, he would pick everything apart!
On one hand, the previous refurbishing leaving permanent marks and gouges that can't be restored is a bit unfortunate. But without that first refurbishing, would it have lived a long enough life to make it to its second one with you? Many years from now, will it get a third? I feel a kind of hope and joy when the value of common objects is seen and appreciated. Everything gets banged up over time but there's something really beautiful about saying, "You're worth the effort to clean up and mend", and extra special when done by someone with skill and care to preserve the details. Thanks for sharing your work!
I used to have that set! It came with 3 leaves (in original boxes, unused) and it was massive. The chairs were large as well, original upholstery. It cost me $150 in '97. I eventually sold it cos it was just so big and my house isn't. I didn't realize they were rare. I like how you saved this one. So beautiful. Now I regret selling mine 😢
As a long time watcher of your channel, there are a few consistencies to your projects. Number one is that you love walnut. If it doesn't look like walnut, you usually stain it to make like it looks like it is. The second is, you dislike dissimilar wood tones. In this case the manufacturer deliberately chose these woods BECAUSE they are dissimilar. Most everybody likes woods that complement each other. What I like is contrast. This table has it! The contrast between the border and the top is what gives this table class compared to the humdrum color of an all walnut piece. You do marvelous work, but sometimes you just need to envision what the artist who created the piece was going for. In this case, it was the contrast of the light dovetail border with the contemporary walnut top.
We had my grandma's 1920 butcher block kitchen table. It was beautiful. I asked my sister to store it for me. She thru it out. It had original decals on it. Art deco . It was beautiful.
@Kathyk479 I’m so sorry that happened. Sounds like it’s still a sore spot! My Aunt did that with my Grandmother’s treadle sewing machine, although I had told her numerous times that I would take it if she no longer wanted it. 🙂
@@cleo1034 I'm so sorry. My sister took it apon her self to believe that I have to many things. Not me . Hubby. Does sister thinks it's all me.. she's wrong. I loved my grandmother. I think this one is actually quite lovely with the obvious difference in wood. Did you ever find any photos of the original piece fresh from the factory? As always, you never disappoint. And just as an added tiny bit of praise, I like that you never back away from errors or mistakes or accidental dings or dents. I like that. Honesty. Good job, Dashner.
I was raised in a house full of Lane, and I am a big fan. I have a few, but I wish I had all those pieces from years ago. I remember the legs on our table being a shade or two darker, not by much ... BUT, what you have done here is incredible! Its gorgeous!! Please say you are keeping it, you'll see a unicorn before you see another one!!
Dash-Nerd Leader, Thanks again for another great project. I agree with your assessment that the solid edging and inlaid dovetails are elm. This video is especially helpful for me, because I have a Lane Acclaim corner table. The guy I bought it from had done a decent job of removing the finish and sanding it. However, for some unknown reason, he then proceeded to add a coat of Restor-a-Finish (walnut). The center walnut veneer looks fine, but, as with your project, the elm looks streaky and nasty. After watching this video, I think I can proceed to bring my table to some approximation of the beauty of yours. Kind regards.
My heart was in my throat when you pulled this out!!! I inherited many acclaim pieces from my Grandparents, but they didn't have this! This is the dream piece that I'd love to have in my home... ❤❤❤ I'm very excited to see what you decide to do!!! 😊
I picked up a Lane Acclaim coffee table at a fair for cheap a few years ago that was water stained from a plant. I did a partial refinish and found that the Teak Natural stain was a near perfect match.
I think this looks great. The two tone look is natural for this piece and you have brought out the beauty of the wood in all its variations. I think you should be pleased with yourself! Even how you handled the dented leg was spot on.
I just scored an entire set of acclaim living room tables and will be refurbishing the tops in the next couple of weeks. I plan on toning everything so it’s consistent like they would have come from the factory, following your method here. Wish me luck!
That was my wifes pick-LANE in 1960-It is still beautiful. i recently restored the end table and hope chest. Still looks beautiful. End table revealed a lighter wood at the corners. i left it without dying to FLAT SIDES AND TOP. kEEP UP THE EXCELLENT VIDS.
I worked for Lane many years ago. I worked in all the departments including stacking veneer before it went into the kilns. I worked one summer with my dad who was the head of the development department which made the machines to make the furniture.
I really love how you keep an open mind about how a piece looks at the end of your work. You're comfortable with the idea of modifying the piece again if it doesn't look quite the way you want. Awesome for you! Get it the way you want it to be, and be okay with changing the finish line.
I'm a fan of dark wood, so I'm going to vote for you not being done and applying a stain! ;) but it's another beautiful restoration from you! Thanks for sharing with us
Really turned out nice. I'm jealous, I love the Acclaim style, my parents had them when I was a kid and have never been fortunate to find a set that was in good shape or reasonably priced. Great job.
Argh, your first Lane Acclaim video was the reason my living room has 8 Lane Acclaim pieces now. I almost picked up one of these dining tables with chairs at an antique store but they had searched for the highest price they had ever sold for and they wouldn't budge on the price... Now I want to find one again.
I love those two tone contrast dovetail tables and you did, as always, a superb job on this one! Yes it could have a little higher contrast but hey, it looks great and every Lane Acclaim piece saved makes me happy ; )
Love the way that you talk us through your work processes and inform us of your knowledge thus teaching us. All very informative and interesting, thank you so much for your channel and posting 🤗
I love Lane acclaim furniture! The contrast between the veneer and the wood that you revealed as you scraped away the finish made me so happy. I’m glad you didn’t tone out all of that contrast, because it’s such a signature design element of the brand. I’ve always wondered how they made the dovetails, and the revelation that they’re veneer is interesting. I haven’t had an opportunity to closely examine any pieces to determine that for myself, so I appreciate the reveal. I like the look of the completed project. Although it’s not exactly original, I like the contrast between the legs and the apron. It fits better with the top of the table. I wish I had room for it in my tiny (cozy little, LOL) apartment.
Hi, Really nice job. It's amazing to see such a big piece from Lane Acclaim. I agree with your critique. And like you prefer a more unified color. The table was a really sweet find congrats. Enjoyed the show. Thank you
Fantastic job as usual. I have to admit, I agree with you and the two-toned effect on this isn't my favorite. But then again, I am a purist and love mid-century and maple colored wood, so there's that.
I’ve noticed that you and I have similar esthetics, except I usually don’t mind the contrast in tone from different woods. I’ll be interested to see what you decide in the end.
Well done - again!! Like you, I'm not so fond of the high contrast colors in such pieces, and I won't be a bit surprised if you continue working on this to make it more uniform. Even so, it is remarkably better after your skilled hands have touched it!
