  • Odissi is one of the eight classical dance forms of India, originating from the state of Orissa, East India.
    This piece is the first dance in the Odissi repertoire: Mangalacharan, Ganesh Vandana.
    Choreographed by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
    Maryam is a London based odissi dancer, and has been studying primarily under Smt Sujata Mohapatra and Colleena Shakti since 2012.

    Please, please never skip the feet while recording these masterpieces... the feet are part of the dance and carry meaning as well. Beautiful performance at a beautiful location.

      I totally agree with you. It is so frustrating that the person filming got too close to the dancer and concentrated so much on her face and arms. The whole body makes the dance.

      @@niharika8288 no it's the other way. They builders took the dancers as reference. Bc back then and sometimes in these days too these ladies dance in the temple for the main deity in the temple.

    This made me cry - how she held the flowers over her heart chakra - how she kept creating the number 4 with her feet and legs - how she took energy from the left side and brought it over to the right - how she put her smile into the flowers and sent it up to the creator I was so moved thank you for sharing this it was like it touched something in me from long ago thank you

    one of the richest and oldest cultures in the world, look at her dancing skills, her rich costume and that background - that building alone must be hundreds of years old, simply breathtaking and so beautiful. I love indian jewellery, i have some in my collection.

    My almost 3 year year old daughter just got this dress up Sticker book with dancers from around the world and she loved dressing up the Indian Dancers, so I thought I would let her watch some Indian Dance. I picked this video out first and then let her watch some others as well. Now she requests to see it every day and says this one is her favorite.

    Very beautifully lady as well as perfect dance. 50 years ago i was student of Bharat Natyam. Now i am 70 years oldman still love to see classical dance. When i see this video but little i became sad because of i couldn't see all foot steps some time it wasn't covered full part of dance. I am from Nepal 🇳🇵 I am so glad to see this dance thanks to making me very happy. God bless you.

      There are gharanas who teach their styles to their family members. And one famous school in in madras who takes only kids. Many schools do take older people but they are not particular about styles. It takes atleast 2 years to learn basics. And you can perform at earliest 6 year mark.

    I miss seeing this kind of dance on TV. I grew up in Leicestershire, and on a Saturday (of memory serves) the regional TV station would play Indian music and dance, usually followed by the latest installment of the epic Mahatbarata. Those sound and images have stayed with me, they're just so beautiful 😍

    The dancer is graceful like a spindle. The movements are smooth, like slow waves rolling onto the shore. A very spiritual dance, a very talented artist. Happiness to her and her family.

    I've always loved traditional dances in basically any culture ever, but Indian dance is especially impressive, if only for the blending of the jewelry and music (plus the costumes and makeup are beautiful). And really, dancers like this wonderful lady are so impressive

    This 8 minutes of masterpiece is a result of more than 8 years (or more) of practice and dedicated learning with the guidance of a guru. Incredible 👌🏾👌🏾 Odissi is the most graceful Indian classical dance form.

    Phenomenal. What a wonderful culture, so deep into their Spirituality and roots. I wish we, Slavic people were so in tune with our internal (and external) Divinity, but sadly all we have today are guesses and reconstructions of how ancient pagan Slavs *might* have lived their lives... So sad, so much history of our own beautiful roots forgotten and abandoned. Please, people of India, be grateful for Your old ways still blooming and growing as vibrant as it was centuries ago.     This is Soo sacred and has so much deep meaning that the viewer would dream of knowing. I love how she kept the rythem of the drum in her movements and of course the scenery and herself. I'm so intrigued by this. I also love how she ended her dance the way she started.

      I know several Odissi dance teachers in Canada and the USA. Where are you situated? Odissi cannot be learned properly through Skype or Zoom

    Interesting. Speaking as someone who has never seen anything like this before I have to wonder about all the hand gestures and the footwork. I'm sure there is an intricate story behind the whole dance, It's beautiful to watch.

      Those hand gestures are dance moves , symbols of things being talked of in the song and also mudras are signs made for the pleasure of the gods . This dance completes the worship of Jagannath in His temple and sends happy vibes that reverberate across the realm and ensure the welfare of the people there .

    I like(love) all of it, really much! Philipp Glass composed a music with a great artist of India. I believe this called "Passage". Really worth to listen to it.
    On a general tone, I love a culture of the world. India is one of my favorite.

      Arjuna asked Krishna how he could worship Krishna (god). Krishna said offer me anything with a pure hear, even a blade of grass will make me happy. Out of this statement has come out all rituals of puja and offering flowers to god.
