As a retired ATCO could not believe that response, replayed the video to check, "did he really say that". Totally unprofessional. Love your videos, keep up the good work
In over 30 years of flying I’ve never had a controller pop off like that. I’ve had some hectic responses with “busy, back shortly” but never that sort of arrogance. Good on you guys for taking high road.
I loved Kevin‘s commentary and educational points between 1130 and 1230. Wanted to hear more about the ATC side. The controller was stressed and you saw him probably at his worst. He got better and it was nice to see you guys give him a chance. Thanks for all the hard work.
As a pilot here in the busy SoCal airspace, I’ve come across my fair share of rude controllers. But that guy took the cake! Kudos to you both for keeping your cool and not participating in such unprofessional behavior. Keep up the amazing videos.
Great job as usual. Can’t believe the controller and Kevin you did a great job. Mindy, I love your explanations and teaching ability. Keep making these great videos! ✌️❤️🙏👍🥃
Please don't ever stop the videos. You are a lovely couple. So well matched. The plane's great. Your country's great. Keep filming and editing please. I certainly appreciate all the effort.
Love the explanation from an ATC perspective, Kevin. Obviously saying something snarky back wouldn't be productive and would likely make it worse but I'd like to think I would be able to bite my tongue as well as you both did in that situation.
SCHMIINDY!!! Yes, we appreciate you and all the "fun" you have with technical fails. But I really enjoy watching you fly - your professionalism is awesome to watch and sets a high bar for all pilots! CAVU!
I’ve retired now but at age 17, I embarked on my flying journey by learning to fly gliders. Only 10 hours in, I got a letter from a university offering me a full ride to law school without the burden of having to spend four years on a first degree. I flew as a passenger from that day forward, except, of course enjoying lawyers’ perks: riding on a Huey skid on an attack run, flying various GA aircraft with the indulgence of various pilots, and crashing an F111 simulator on takeoff (forgot the afterburners). What I derive from your vids and vlogs is just how nice GA folks are, to each other and themselves and their important others. I follow the journeys of various bloggers on Utube. In every case I see personal growth, courtesy, hard work and achievement. It gives me so much faith in the future. Thank you.
Greetings from PEI CANADA. Excellent job as always on the videos, the fact that you continue to create content through challenges will only make followers appreciate you more. Props to you for keeping it real and forging through it. The videos are fantastic, really appreciate the work and dedication it takes to get to what we see. Thank you for your effort!
Dang man, she’s an AWESOME pilot AND she loves bourbon!!! Don’t ever do her wrong man, that’s a keeper! lol. Great video and thanks for taking us along. Cheers! 🥃🥃🇺🇸🇺🇸
As I was watching this video, I thought I am definitely going to respond by sending a comment and thanking you for taking the time to make this video and all the others. As an aviation content, creator myself, I know all the hard work it takes to not only edit the videos, but to prepare yourself,, and the cameras to make it all come together. And even when you lay down the best plans, something does always seem to happen. So I am responding to your request and sending you a little shout out, and showing some love for the hard work you put in to your channel. Fly well!
That was a poor show from the controller, he basically left you high and dry! Imagine if it was a rookie pilot being treated like that and not a seasoned pro like yourself, Mindy! Awesome video Mindy, that approach was just spectacular👌
Really appreciate the subtle teaching you do when explaining what’s going on, like what the system is looking for during the approach capture. Your videos are a great source of entertainment and learning, plus the amazing chemistry between you two!
Thank you for the videos despite your technical issues, they are still great. BTW great learning moments for a low time pilot with your discussion about ATC.
I know I am thankful for your YT videos, and I thank you both ! Also, great patience on you both holding your tongue with that rude controller. Love when you both fly... stay safe and again, thanks for the videos, CYA
I think you guys handled it perfectly. With a response like that just ask if there's anything they want you to do in the meantime and hang out. It was just under 2.5 minutes until he got back to you. Yeah, people get busy. You don't know what pilot you are working with and you could add a lot of undue stress to particular pilots which can make the airspace less safe. Spot on with the feedback in the air about how ATC could have responded differently.
Most definitely appreciate all of your videos and adventures !! My own GoPro likes to turn off all by itself for no reason , far too often :) Great flying along with you two
I grew up drinking unfiltered, untreated well water out of a hose. Also, we visited Bardstown this year (on a tour van) and had a great time tasting some delicious ... beverages. Highly recommended.
Hope you enjoyed the bourbon trail! I went to prep school with Julian Van Winkle (way back in the late '60's) who is now famous for the "Pappy" brands. His family does bourbon right. And thanks for the flight video and comments on the ATCO controller. Hope you followup with them. Thanks and stay safe!! Always enjoy flying with you!
Love your channel and aeroplane, I’ve been a subscriber for a year or so😊. That was terrible from ATC, his initial response didn’t even include your callsign. In Australia they will say your callsign, remain outside controlled airspace, then they’ll call you back with a code and a clearance😊.
Friends keep asking me why I don't get a Cirrus or move up to a Diamond DA 50. I love my 182. It may not fly as high or as fast, but I love the airplane.
Before flying in a Cessna 182 I always eat a healthy breakfast of psychedelic mushrooms. I live in Romania. so the the panic that ensues.. never reaches the news. Mindy dear Smindy.. please fly by my house.. it is a good house.❤
Even if he said something to the effect of "Hey N3802D I'm a bit busy right now as the only controller (or one of two or three controllers) on duty handling X number of aircraft, contact me (or I'll contact you) in about 5 - 10 minutes as I expect to be less busy then and we can get your IFR clearance on the go. Meanwhile maintain VFR" even if his phrasing was not exactly standard/proper, it would have been better than what he actually said. To Kevin's point about gravy - I like a good white or sausage gravy here. Also for Mindy - I enjoy a good Bourbon as well.
Hey @Schmiiindy why not get your release on the ground? Kevin was 100% correct about that controller’s phraseology (or lack thereof), but why not just call and get your release on the ground and then just check-in normally? I can tell you up there in N90 (NE), you gotta do that or you will be waiting a lot more than 5 minutes (though they might do what Kevin says and give you a local squawk and just say, “remain VFR”).
@RetreadPhoto I’m not going to say you can’t do what she did (depart VFR than activate your IFR plan). I’m just saying in very busy airspace, don’t expect timely service since you are putting a tremendous burden on the controller (what if she needed a full route clearance, what if MVFR and suddenly, clouds!). I agree that the controller was clearly annoyed and his phraseology was dubious at best. With that said, this could have all been avoided on the ground with a simple phone call to the controlling facility.
@@pisymboltremendous burden is just false. An FRC requires maybe an extra minute or 2. Especially with a Cessna they’re not going to get some long Q route like jets will. Worst case just get them their code and issue the clearance when you can.
You are missing the point - there was no reason for any of this exchange if she would have just called for clearance and release on the ground. Full stop. I’m not saying the controller here was not rude. I’m saying it could have been avoided entirely.
Sure it could’ve been avoided this time but from the quickness of which he said it, this is a normal response from him. It’s unacceptable. Aircraft picking up IFR in the air will always be around. Inconvenience or not we’re trained to deal with it.
@@dylandemarest4683 Right, but it's not about this guy or whoever VAS Aviation's next victim is for everyone to Monday morning QB without any real learning from it. It's about what would have made this flight safer. I'd argue getting that clearance/release on the ground would have. That's the learning here. Not that this guy was unprofessional or had poor phraseology (even if it's true).
Bah, ignore the crabby controllers. You guys did awesome, perfect reaction. I find that some areas would rather you pick up in the air, others want you to pick it up on the ground. You have to guess who you are dealing with. I learned a while ago, not to react to d-bag responses from controllers. Get what you want from them, move on. New York, can be ahem, trying, occasionally, but mostly good, it just depends. Re videos, I feel for you, I gave up, go pros aren't that great in an airplane, always shutting down, always during the good stuff.
Some people have their own ways of doing things. And they don’t care about how it ought to be done. They don’t care how what they do affects others. They just think they’re entitled to doing things their way. And I’m sick and tired of these people whoever they are. There is a reason why flying is far safer than driving on the ground!!!
Here is what I think is the dude was too busy. You should have opened the IFR flight plan via flight service and not departed until released. You’re essentially pushing your way in.
Good grief, that controller was simply not at his best. Had one speak like that once when I was handling radios for a buddy driving his PC-12 into KTEB while in IFR, but it was more just the typical NYC metro area controller that probably has too many aircraft in tightly compated congested airspace. This guy in the video however, seemed like he just didn't wanna play that day. Does anyone feel that if Minday had called for her IFR clearance prior to departure that she might have had a less obstinate controller when calling for it afterwards?
Possible ATC deviation then give them your number 😅 I kid but I feel like he could have been better. Could have gave the same meaning with same or fewer words and sounded more professional
As a retired ATCO could not believe that response, replayed the video to check, "did he really say that". Totally unprofessional. Love your videos, keep up the good work
That ATCO should not be allaowd to have that job. Allways be nice to people.
What a rude and unprofessional controller. K & M I applaud your calm and muted response. You guys ROCK!
In over 30 years of flying I’ve never had a controller pop off like that. I’ve had some hectic responses with “busy, back shortly” but never that sort of arrogance. Good on you guys for taking high road.
Honestly the connection you two have. Living the dream sharing your passions. Life goals
Searching my copy of the 7110.65 for "yeah that's not gonna happen anytime soon". That phraseology is new to me!
I loved Kevin‘s commentary and educational points between 1130 and 1230. Wanted to hear more about the ATC side. The controller was stressed and you saw him probably at his worst. He got better and it was nice to see you guys give him a chance. Thanks for all the hard work.
"Stressed" is NOT an excuse...there are MANY responses that ahole could have come back with instead of the unprofessional rudeness.
@RetreadPhoto agree totally
As a pilot here in the busy SoCal airspace, I’ve come across my fair share of rude controllers. But that guy took the cake! Kudos to you both for keeping your cool and not participating in such unprofessional behavior. Keep up the amazing videos.

As an IFR student this video was really helpful and much appreciated. Also, my blood comes alive when doing the bourbon trail. 😊
Nice landing! I appreciate all your work into the videos.

Welcome to my home base! The best airport ever!
Thank you for you videos. I enjoy the interaction between you and Kevin, and of course the flying.
great ride Mindy! enjoy tagging along with you two...!
Boy you are good Mindy.
Tnx for sharing. Great content as always.
Loved the video.Yep I drank water out of a garden hose. Also drank right out of the creek!
Grew up drinking from a garden hose on our farm all the time!!!! Much better water than chlorine city water!!! Thanks for your video's......
Thanks for the free videos!!
Great video as always, keep them coming and thank you
Hard to say bad things against fellow controller. Obviously very busy but it's not what you say but how to say it.
Great video. Agree with Kevin that ATL is an efficient airport. I fly commercial out of there frequently. Also efficient for the traveling public.
The controller incident, ask them if they are ready to copy a number.
Most definitely appreciate all of your videos and adventures !! My own GoPro likes to turn off all by itself for no reason , far too often :) Great flying along with you two
Enjoy your stuff! Keep on keeping on.
Kevin hope sometime you might talk about how you got into the ATC profession and how one might go about becoming an ATC
Love you videos
Thanks for the videos!
I've heard, "That's not going to happen" many times over 30 yrs flying.
Usually right when I most need ATC
Welcome to Atlanta ATC, I always try to pick it up outside of their airspace, because of that reason.
Welcome to ATL, the controllers are always in some kind of mood
Love the cover of "Twin & Turbine", October issue 2024!!!! Love the Blues!!!!

16:30 - I did a flight today for a video... nothing went to plan.
No video, but I got to fly around! So a win nonetheless.
Thanks for the videos..
That might be the same guy that gave my IFR student a lecture for something little on our way to Newnan
Many great distilleries in Central Ky ,
Mojo - trouble free in 2025 !!!
Before flying in a Cessna 182 I always eat a healthy breakfast of psychedelic mushrooms. I live in Romania. so the the panic that ensues.. never reaches the news. Mindy dear Smindy.. please fly by my house.. it is a good house.❤
I don't have strut steps on my Skyhawk either. I just step where the strut meets the fuselage.
That kind of response is common here in the NY area, sometimes even worse
That is not an acceptable response from the ATC. I am sure that is not a safe nor standardized use of the airspace by that controller.
Gotta be Sportys!
Wowser!
Enjoy your videos. I have a question: what is the black unit on the headliner of Mojo? I did not see it on your earlier videos. Thanks.

Gut viu et sky line, roge
Best clim were side, redset & fine
Quemark, forward rate, haw stud rang ehm obeca
I would respond with “awesome, feel better?”
That controller was very disrespectful and I hope he gets disciplined for it
What I would do.. then ask for flight following and then see what the response would be.
14:20 An ant hill with very large ants. WOW.
Simple, IFR is ATC's priority. No surprise there.
Wow, that controller didn't even offer you options. No "maintain VFR," no estimated time till release... Dude was _rude_ !

Ya'll make the best content. But...can't believe you didn't have Kev fly the whole thing under the hood! 😉
Thank you!! Haha my turn to fly 😎
I’m 48 years old and still drink from the garden hose sometimes.
Just for interest, what watch do you wear?
That’s the rudest controller I have heard in 35 years of flying
I'll keep you in my prayers. Good video. Rude controller.
