I love the Duo series from Asus. Have been using an older one for a few years and I honestly can't use a normal laptop anymore. I was wanting to get it last year but with the massive delays I thought to wait for this year. I've gone through THREE of these, all 3 of which have had issues. First one had a really awful screen flickering issue that won't resolve with any settings changed or windows resets. I returned it and exchanged it for another, thinking I got a lemon. The second one was working fine until it randomly crashed. I had upgraded the ram to 64gb, so I buy back the 32 that came with it with no luck. Many windows resets and updates later, with no luck. I went ahead and returned and exchanged that one and decided to give it one more shot. The third one had the same issues as the second, though it worked for a few days more. Even with a fresh install of windows with no installed programs (other than what comes with windows by default) the laptop would randomly crash when doing nothing with no programs open. I got so frustrated I returned it. The Duo 14 for this year has been released, and as tempting as it is, the power offered by this one is just so tempting. I've been reading comments on here and on reddit with similar issues to mine, so I am not sure what's going on. I think asus has some QC stuff to work on. A shame, I really wanted to love this thing, and I do! But three units that don't work is really not ok, especially for the price.

Manufactures seem 'unwilling to commit'? You do know that Intel signed 'exclusivity contracts' with some of those so that only the Intel chips are offered initially (?)
Which makes absolute sense from an economical point of you. If you manufacture millions of CPUs a year, you want to make sure to find a home somewhere. That said, there are a number of things that add up, and which is why we see such slow adoption of AMD cpus.
That depends very much on what you are looking for. The M18 is one of the fastest notebooks in our database, but the Duo has two screens and a much smaller footprint. Even if it is still quite big for a 16" machine!
I own the Zephyrus duo 15 SE. I would consider this if the main display was also 4K like my current setup, as I edit a lot of 4K videos (and sometimes 5.2k -6k videos) and can't go back to a lower resolution. it's a shame as I would like the larger screen real estate the main screen has been increased to
I can not see why it should be. It is definitely much worse to only charge and drain the battery all the time. And you get the maximum performance only when plugged in.
There is not THE BEST laptop out there, but rather the one that best fits your needs. So you have to decide what you value most regarding your ideal notebook.
If I recall correctly, these chips sare rates for 105C, and you will most likely not always run the CPU at full throttle. So it should not be a problem at all!
Great review, great laptop! I played for 20 minutes with Duo 15 2021 in a store once and hated it. While being an amazing laptop on paper if I wanted to game or type on it comfortably I had to move it further away due to keyboard being placed too close. That forces you either to sit with twisted back in an uncomfortable position or be content with screen being too far back. I've recieved Blade 16 2 days ago and absolutely love it! Thanks for helping me with the right choice, Alex!
It does help with the ergonomics a lot. But it does not mitigate the problem that you are further away from your laptop and needs a lot more "depth" on your desk, especially if you use it as I did in the video with a screen behind it.
I had more issues with needing more depth space (on desk, on the lap) than screen distance. A few more inches away is hardly a deal breaker, especially when you're constantly shifting around in your seat. You're always +/- some inches away from the screen continuously anyway, regardless if you're on a laptop or desktop.
Realistically how hard is this to use on your lap ? Like not at all possible or maybe get used to it in some time once you get comfortable with it ? Also is it really heavy ? Can you carry it around and use it while standing and stuff like the m16 ? Dimensions seems off.. does it fit in a regular 15in sleeve ? Considering 16in laptops these days are the same footprint as 15in onces And one more thing, why wasn't any GPU benchmarks done in manual mode at 175w ? Is there a throttling issue or something?
It is definitely possible to use on your laptop, but it will never be as comfortable as with a regular laptop. It is pretty heavy at 2,66 kg and pretty thick, so you might have your fair share of problems fitting it into a tight 15" bag or laptop compartment. I did a test in manual mode in our noise samples. I have not noticed any throttling, and we did not do any additional testing since we do not have unlimited time for each review! :)
As you can see in our Cyberpunk test, it takes things from 120 fps to 128 fps while maintaining a similar noise profile. Given how close our results are to 175W 4090s, I would say you can close the gap. But it will vary by title.
I received mine 2 weeks ago and I'm happy with it excepted for these points: 1. It very rarely randomly crashes or freeze. Althgouh after playing with graphic drivers I do not see these issues anymore. It happened once in Ubuntu but I'm not sure if it's hardware related or software related. I believe it's software. 2. This one is a big one no one mention: The screen blooming is really annoying with HDR on, especially in the browser with a dark theme but also in games in some scenarios. Unfortunately I can't return it because of how I imported it in my country, it's a big hassle. If I bought it in the US I would prob have returned it tho given how expensive it was with a 4090.
My question is whether an adequately equipped repair shop could decouple or otherwise upgrade at least one USB-C to Gen 4. That would really help future proof it with eGPU compatibility. The 5090 is around the corner. I would bet the mobile version comes later, so the next Zephyrus Duo 16 would be in 2026 is my guess. Annoying to be stuck with 4090 mobile specs though it’s no slouch. The build quality gives me pause when Asus isn’t exactly known for customer service when things fail…
@@Illyrian_Adventures Thunderbolt has to be certified by Intel, but even the AMD version can have Thunderbolt port working despite not being certified.
The bits using a pen and photoshop really highlight what a crazy good package this is for anyone doing that sort of content creation. I think the reason the touchscreen is glossy instead of matte is to enhance perceived brightness and crispness, as the new mini-LED screen might just make the older touchscreen a tad too bland as they stand side-by-side. The Duos are, I think, ASUS' flagship devices. Their previous models always packed more performance in nearly every metric on a compact chassis than damn near anything else. This one would seem to hit the mark, if not for the battery life. That is honestly baffling, last year's Duo had some of the best battery life of any windows machine, and certainly so for any windows machine with close to that performance, and the Zen 4 chip should be more efficient than the Zen 3+ one in last year's model. I'm hoping that's fixable with a firmware update to better manage it, as right now, I'm guessing the HX chip is guzzling power for simple tasks. Apple has shown mini-LED can coexist with outstanding battery life, but maybe they haven't nailed this one down. Maybe it's both. I can see the appeal for this if you are into photography, digital art, architecture, or really anything that the conveniently placed and tilted built-in touch-screen helps with. In that, it's not even close, as the competition all require an additional drawing table to compete. But for anyone else, it becomes a matter of deeper consideration. ... Also, real nice shirt. Got a link for that?
Agreed on everything. Being into video and retouching myself, this puppy is so convenient on the go. Battery life is disappointing for now, but maybe they can improve it in the future. That said, I take the additional performance over battery life any day since I mostly use high-end notebooks plugged in. The shirt is from Scotch & Soda, but its a couple of years old, so I wonder if they still sell it! :D
I think they went with white to help distinguish it from the steam deck. I also would prefer black, but I get why they did that. You could argue playstation did the same against the xbox.
It's not only the panzer, but also the true beast of ROG series. Scar 18 Plus SE may lose the No.1 title of ROG. The drawback of this year mode is DDR5-4800 instead of 5600, but the price is ridiculously unfriendly, even more expensive than Razer and Alienware.😃
Just got it this month and to be honest, I have a lot of driver issues this past few days from display not responding to restarting by itself 😢 Must admit, it would be a great laptop if Asus fixes their drivers especially the “Armoury Create”
That doesn't sound very good. Have you checked the MyAsus App if there are any firmware updates available? It is inconvenient that they space this out in several apps, but this may help you!
@@NotebookcheckReviews I just found a solution to the problem. It seems the AMD Adrenaline software is the root cause of all the problem. With that being said, I’ve uninstalled it using DDU and let windows automatically update the driver, and everything seems to run smoothly from that point.
Not a fan of the design and the portability. The price is the final nail in the coffin. If you have high disposable income and have some niche use for the extra display, it may add value. But the keyboard, trackpad, weight, poor battery life, and price make this a tough buy for a tiny demographic.
I would rather prefered to have GPU and CPU (i9) from Intel on the Zephyrus Duo 16…😢 Why can ASUS do this on the ROG Flow Z13 and not with the Zephyrus????
It has been a long time since I bothered to check out any newer high end gaming laptop, at stores of course, I don't have that kind of money to waste, and finally seeing this video - I'm shocked - are you serious? 99C CPU, 86 GPU temperatures???? I am surprised you didn't end up with a black pool of molten plastic on your desk, WOW! Those kind of temperatures will result in a broken machine so soon, I don't think it would even outlast its original warranty, or maybe just about. It's just not practical, or realistic, to buy these machines, If I was asked, and I know I'm not. I can't state enough how bad that is for the hardware, and the rest of the machine, and your lap if you dare to place the $5,000+ machine at such risk, and your pants with chance of being set on fire. With the kind of INSANE money they're asking for these ultra high end gaming laptops, there really should be no options when it comes to cooling methods. All of those high end machines, $2,500 - $3,000 and up should come STANDARD with the best liquid cooling possible. For safety and fairness to the wasteful buyer.
That temperature is quiet normal if u had owned any gaming laptop, with something that size it’s not possible for liquid cooling. Have u seen what size are those desk top graphic cards? Compare to a mobile graphics card you can’t really be asking that much
You could classify this as a desktop replacement that delivers the best performance plugged in. Most users going for something like this will probably use it plugged in for the most time, so I would say battery life was not really the priority when tuning this one.
@@NotebookcheckReviews that's how I'm using it most of the time. I'm not even bothered about the battery life. Is it a better option than the razer blade 18 2023 model? Since it has a lot of software issues and crashes, I'm a little confused to go for it.
Is the rtx 4070 model SKU available in any market ?
I am afraid you would have to check your local retailers!
Where'd you get that shirt Alex? It looks good
:D I got it from scotch & soda. Need a discount code? :D #influencer
temps?
Manufactures seem 'unwilling to commit'? You do know that Intel signed 'exclusivity contracts' with some of those so that only the Intel chips are offered initially (?)
Which makes absolute sense from an economical point of you. If you manufacture millions of CPUs a year, you want to make sure to find a home somewhere.
That said, there are a number of things that add up, and which is why we see such slow adoption of AMD cpus.
what is the best? Alienware m18 or Zephyrus duo 16 ?
That depends very much on what you are looking for.
The M18 is one of the fastest notebooks in our database, but the Duo has two screens and a much smaller footprint. Even if it is still quite big for a 16" machine!
I own the Zephyrus duo 15 SE. I would consider this if the main display was also 4K like my current setup, as I edit a lot of 4K videos (and sometimes 5.2k -6k videos) and can't go back to a lower resolution. it's a shame as I would like the larger screen real estate the main screen has been increased to
can u suggest a good windows laptop for 4k-8k video editing? that's worth it
Very detailed explanation. Sadly the battery life is long for 2 hrs only🥲by the way, what is the name of the shooting game there?
Its definitely not the most mobile gaming laptop this year. I think the game you are referring to is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
How screen plus add task bar😢
In the windows display or taskbar settings is an option that is called along the lines of "show taskbar on all screens" or something.
Is bad to leave the charger in for too long or all the time?
I can not see why it should be. It is definitely much worse to only charge and drain the battery all the time. And you get the maximum performance only when plugged in.
Is this the best laptop to buy? or is it alienware x16 or g14 4090
There is not THE BEST laptop out there, but rather the one that best fits your needs. So you have to decide what you value most regarding your ideal notebook.
Fantastic review! Is it safe and normal this laptop reaches CPU temperatures 95 - 100 celsius while gaming?
If I recall correctly, these chips sare rates for 105C, and you will most likely not always run the CPU at full throttle. So it should not be a problem at all!
That's pretty typical for all laptops since the 2000s. Have had older gaming laptops and hovering around 95-100C is the norm, nothing to worry about
Great review, great laptop!
Thanks for helping me with the right choice, Alex!
you get a free wristwrest within the box which is made of somekind of soft rubber (as said by many reviews) so that kind of fixes the problem you have
@@donquaviousiii3943 how does wristrest fix you having to move laptop further back than normally?
It does help with the ergonomics a lot. But it does not mitigate the problem that you are further away from your laptop and needs a lot more "depth" on your desk, especially if you use it as I did in the video with a screen behind it.
I had more issues with needing more depth space (on desk, on the lap) than screen distance. A few more inches away is hardly a deal breaker, especially when you're constantly shifting around in your seat. You're always +/- some inches away from the screen continuously anyway, regardless if you're on a laptop or desktop.
how many year does it last because i am scared or worried that this my 1st time purchase a laptop powered with amd ?
Well it is a high-quality machine so it should last you some time. But of course we have no way of testing this over several years.
Considering 16in laptops these days are the same footprint as 15in onces
And one more thing, why wasn't any GPU benchmarks done in manual mode at 175w ? Is there a throttling issue or something?
It is definitely possible to use on your laptop, but it will never be as comfortable as with a regular laptop.
It is pretty heavy at 2,66 kg and pretty thick, so you might have your fair share of problems fitting it into a tight 15" bag or laptop compartment.
I did a test in manual mode in our noise samples. I have not noticed any throttling, and we did not do any additional testing since we do not have unlimited time for each review! :)
@@NotebookcheckReviews is the performance better in manual mode ? Like does it get closer to laptops with standard 175w 4090s ?
As you can see in our Cyberpunk test, it takes things from 120 fps to 128 fps while maintaining a similar noise profile. Given how close our results are to 175W 4090s, I would say you can close the gap. But it will vary by title.
If you game on it, forget about using it on ur lap, it gets extremely hot. Close to 100 celsius. I have the machine.
I received mine 2 weeks ago and I'm happy with it excepted for these points:
Do you still have the screen blooming problem now? Love it so much but it seems it has lots of software issues.😂
@@will-ek5if Yep, this issue is never gonna go away. I also checked another model at Computex and the scar 16, same blooming issues
goodluck in the long run with that
Are you reviewing the 7940Hs laptops soon?😝 I really enjoy your reviews!
Yepp, the G14 is on my desk right now! ;)
@@NotebookcheckReviews looking forward to the review! May I know what config did you get?
The money-is-no-object SKU ;)
I plan to mine monero and other privacy tokens with this. Since I am now free to roam the earth I need a portable beast.
Thanks! Amazing work. What a beast!!
You are more than welcome!

Both of them😃
Waiting for the predator helios 18 review
Same ;)
Not having Thunderbolt 4 is my biggest gripe with this laptop, but everything else is excellent.
It does have it
@@Illyrian_Adventures If that is indeed the case, I am buying this ASAP.
@@NIKOLAP7 sorry just double checked, since it is AMD CPU it has no thunderbolt. If there is a i9 version, it should have it
@@Illyrian_Adventures Thunderbolt has to be certified by Intel, but even the AMD version can have Thunderbolt port working despite not being certified.
Offtopic question: are you battle(non)sense?
Am i what?
@@NotebookcheckReviews the youtuber, he (battlenonsense) sounds like you lol
oh :D I will check him out. But no, I am not him, to answer your question!
@@NotebookcheckReviews You sound very similar :D
I think they went with white to help distinguish it from the steam deck. I also would prefer black, but I get why they did that. You could argue playstation did the same against the xbox.
I guess you are talking about the ROG Ally?
@NotebookcheckReviews loool. I was actually, and I honestly thought I wrote the comment on a different channel. My bad. This looks dope by the way.
😂 thanks bud!
Very unfriendly price indeed!
Asus makes some of the best stuff on the market rn !
Definitly when it comes to features and exciting new form factors!
Just got it this month and to be honest, I have a lot of driver issues this past few days from display not responding to restarting by itself 😢
Must admit, it would be a great laptop if Asus fixes their drivers especially the “Armoury Create”
With that being said, I’ve uninstalled it using DDU and let windows automatically update the driver, and everything seems to run smoothly from that point.
cpu is error..why not intel 😅
What bothers you about the AMD CPU?
Mine died after six months, needed new mother board, £4,000, fantastic!
Damn, that sucks! Did they replace it for you without much hassle?
Was it still under the guarantee or you paid from you own pocket
Not a fan of the design and the portability. The price is the final nail in the coffin. If you have high disposable income and have some niche use for the extra display, it may add value. But the keyboard, trackpad, weight, poor battery life, and price make this a tough buy for a tiny demographic.
True, it is not a laptop for everybody.
I would love that extra screen for coding/bioinformatics but alas, $$$
I would rather prefered to have GPU and CPU (i9) from Intel on the Zephyrus Duo 16…😢 Why can ASUS do this on the ROG Flow Z13 and not with the Zephyrus????
What bothers you about the Ryzen? If nobody would tell you, you would probably not be able to tell the difference ....
Not adding USB4 when the CPU supports it is a crime.
A wasted opportunity, for sure!
Some say Money can't buy happiness
What i can buy with money:::
Ok 🙃
I cannot even buy this in my dreams 😅
It says insufficent account balance
I am pretty sure that is the case for many Gamers this year, especially with these absolut high-end devices!
@@NotebookcheckReviews absolutely true😢
Paradise of creators
Very much so!
Pointless specs for gaming when all recent games run so terribly on even the most powerful PC rigs.
What games are you referring to exactly? I had a pretty good time testing the Zephyrus with many of the most recent AAA titles ...
Compare to a mobile graphics card you can’t really be asking that much
잘생겼다!!
i like it
👍
With this poor battery life its an absolute disappointment. Not sure why they even launched it.
I've got tired of destkops tbh, as I want to take it with me, instead of waiting to come home to play some game or do some retouching ... mine is sporting the 4080, but it still delivers ;)
@@NotebookcheckReviews then we should call it a desktop. I have seen reviewers getting around 3 hours or less battery life on light usage, which essentially means the battery goes down as soon as you unplug.
@@Yusufyusuf-lh3dw "battery goes down as soon as you unplug" I'd love to know what magical device *stays powered* when you unplug it lmao
@@UrdnotAkongo anything except a ryzen 7945hx laptop lmao. 🤣
Asus hat die Lautstärke immer noch nicht im Griff. Kann man immer noch benutzen als Föhn, einen teueren Föhn 🤣
Das stimmt aber so auch für ziemlich jeden anderen Hersteller in den höheren Performance-Modi ...
Worst laptop I have ever owned.
This laptop can go so hot, you'll regret to have it.
After 3 years, main display died on my duo. After reading about it, I was supprised how many issues Asus have with this model.
Don't buy, the laptop every year drop the price 30%
Which is the same for almost all electronics ....
@@NotebookcheckReviews not, dyson can maintain the price
people are stupid complaining about the noise. Don't buy a gaming laptop if you care about the damn noise. Or don't buy one at all get a damn desktop or get one with i3
4090? Boy, are you seriously? Not even close. Don't support this scam, plz.
Which scam are you talking about exactly?
@@NotebookcheckReviews 4090 laptop = 4090 desktop? Why you naming this shit "4090"????
If I remember correctly, I referred to the GPU with laptop or mobile 4090 in the video. And guys, you have to be realistic. There is no way a mobile card performs like a desktop card. The 4090, in this case, merely means it's the fastest card you can get in a laptop ... at least, that is my take on it.
@@NotebookcheckReviews nice man. So many people just see or hear 4090 and buy. And if you don't mark this fake chip "mobile", "4090M", "4090 laptop GPU", then don't be surprised in the next generation if 5090 laptop will be have same specs as 5070 desktop.
@@hacunamattata679 Dude, it's no fault of his, NVIDIA chose to name them the same way, complain to NVIDIA if you want lol. If people are too dumb to buy a $5k laptop before doing their own research beforehand it's their problem.
