I'm not quite sure, to be honest. I think for a lot of people, 18" laptops are still flying a bit under the radar, so they might not even know what they are missing out on.
I think there are two groups of users : The first which lives on limited space like boat, caravan , single room apartment and which have to transport the equipment from time to time. The secound are technical enthusiast which are facinated to have a lot of power in a relativ small case (compared to the desktop). What I still miss a bit are individual developments for 18 inch. My Helios 18 for example has the same motherboard and cooling solution as the Helios 16 - same with the ROG Strix . The additional space is just wasted. I know - it is for the price but with comparable strix G18 / G16 you have 500 € price difference - thats quite a lot of money for a 2 inch bigger screen when everything else is almost the same ..... A this price difference an fan or an heatpipe more should be possible :-)
18 inch - yes, gaming - not really. If something like usb c charged, 18 inch with Ryzen 9 ai hx 370 (this name ffs...) less than 2kg I would buy it instantly As for your ces reporting - waiting for your legion go 2 coverage :)
@@NotebookcheckReviews Good point - still, if lg gram 17 at 1.3kg wasn't rigid as wet noodle, 18 inch magnesium chassis should be possible even at 1.8kg. Still - we are talkig about market size of one :D
I just bought msi Raider A18 HX A7VHG with amd 7945hx3d and 4080 is big but really like the thing for editing 8K 360 videos I got from msi store for $2100 on sale
Fair point with the bigger screen. 17.3 and 18 inches are amazing to work on. For me the perfect size would bei neither 16 nor 18 inches :D The XMG Neo with 17.0 inches is the perfect size for me. Big screen but still almost as portable as 16-inches. Unfortunately it is the only option on the market and the design looks rather ugly. I will have to go for 16 inches, because I need to use a laptop stand for ergonomics and I want a stand which I can carry in my laptop bag. Most stands are too small for 17.3 or 18 inches.

Will be interesting to see the Dell Pro Max 16 and 18 inch laptops leaked for CES2025. If they can pull off Enhanced Power envelope with USB-C maybe with a suitable dock as well, might ditch my current setup and go single laptop and just dock with monitors in the office.
Hi there great content. Thank you. I am looking for a laptop with a 4k screen and hopefully a 4090 Nvidia GPU. The MSI Titan is out of my budget. My main use is Davinci Resolve. My search started with the ASUS ProArt 16 which led me to your channel and subsequent subscription! My concern was that the ProArt only had a 4070 and slow CPU and the memory was not upgradable from 64Gb. As I play games, namely God of War and MSFS as 2 examples, and I travel 6 times a year with the laptop I am a bit stuck. I also plug my laptop into curved 35inch 4K 120 mhz widescreen. Do you have a video of "'choosing by screen"". Also I am looking to have a 6Tb of storage (probably 1x 4Tb and 1x2Tb) . Again, Many Thanks for the content you create. It must take ages making these videos !
Let’s take in consideration the professionals that need the extra real estate. For me there is no turning back. Let down by the half baked acer Helios 18 a very satisfied by Asus Strix G18.
If you dont mind carrying something heavy and paying extra dollars for it, then it is worth it. I enjoy my 18 inch laptop and the normal 16 inches look so small now i dont want to go back. But yeah depends on what you need of course.
@NotebookcheckReviews no, I hope by resolution. a 1200p display is perfect for 16inch where you donot need DPI scalling(things are a lot sharper without scaling). 16 inch is just right for it, 18 inch cannot have 1440p without scaling but 1200p will be a bit low. 16 inch is the perfect size for 1200p resolution.
I been using laptops for 21 years now and I would definitely say, 17 inch is the minimum size for serious work. Bigger screen is always preferred, at home I use 42 inch monitor for gaming just because I grew so tired of having to lean forward in fps games, bigger screen also allows me to use more of my vision. But all you do is use Word or browse the web, a small screen can work, anything more professional its no good. Unless you got magnification glasses on you.
Bought my AW M18r1, with an i9 13900HX, 4080RTX, and 32gb RAM, in July of 2023. It's been great since day one!
Great to hear!
Bought exactly the same in 2024, cant be happyer except i would have gone for AMD instead of intel 14900HX
I think the answer to this question is "if you're asking the question, they are not for you".
If you need them, you know you need them

I would think going for light and an 18" chassis, would not really result in a very stable chassis ...

imho the thermal and battery performance doesnt scale proportionaly with size, also take into account the bigger power brick its just not it yet...
Most 16" 4090 laptops come with the same sized 330W power bricks ;)
@@NotebookcheckReviews passive cooled power supply bricks still have a ceiling at 330watt

Oh sweet, were are you located? Been trying to get a sample for that one!
I'm planning on upgrading the 32gb with 96gb and max the notebook out and replace 1tb ssd with 4tb

Same!

Will there be a proper review of the Samsung Book5 pro 360 on your website anytime soon?
I don't think samples are yet available in Germany yet, but I'll see what we can do!

i think legion 7 pro is a better option, 16inch but you still have totl performance and not that much weight to carry around
Well, I didn't say 18" is inherently better than 16" ;)

Haha I felt like this as well, after I finished this video. Which one are you using?
@NotebookcheckReviews asus strix g18
01:31 "Two Inches does not sound like a lot"; How dare you?! 😡
:D I was actually waiting for someone to comment on that :D
16 inch 16:10 ratio laptops are just about right. They are big enough.
Have you tried 18" yet?
@NotebookcheckReviews no, I hope by resolution. a 1200p display is perfect for 16inch where you donot need DPI scalling(things are a lot sharper without scaling). 16 inch is just right for it, 18 inch cannot have 1440p without scaling but 1200p will be a bit low.
16 inch is the perfect size for 1200p resolution.
Imo 16 is the sweet spot of portability and screen size...and you can always buy an additional screen
