I was between the ages of eight and fifteen back then and remember the programme very well with the different presenters. The theme tune is in A major with a lilting time signature of 6/8. (I have a musical background and a very good memory for tunes).
Loving every second of this fantastic piece of music... Back in the time machine.. to care free days, and would imagine and wonder of the near and far away places
this makes me feel so old - strange that back in the early 1980's even Spain and Greece seemed like exotic and far away places - now people fly to Thailand for a week and think nothing of it !
That's great - a complete curveball, but growing up, I ALWAYS wanted to know what synth was used for the solo. Sounds like a Fairlight but I could never be sure. Is there any way you could find out or is that lost to the mists of time? Thanks so much.
Watching this as a kid what amazing memories. These places I thought wow I’ll never be able to visit these places lol then you grow up get a job and they all become reality , nearly bought a tear to my eye hearing this
Indeed. A great melody and recording. Sadly, his commission for new Holiday music in 1988 was nowhere near as accomplished, with Holiday Romance a mere shadow of this classic. Only Ballade Pour Adeline (Clayderman: ruclips.net/video/eCCan3TFPoc/видео.html) and A Lonely Shepherd (Last) trumps this as instrumental genius.
The topless bird in the pool, bit much aged 11. Back when a week in Spain seemed long haul when you had to settle for a caravan in beat up Norfolk with no running water.
Heard Gordon live last week at a Cheswick Green Ukulele Orchestra fundraiser for Sepsis, absolutely incredible musician. Felt so privileged to witness his talent.
Great piece of music by Gordon Giltrap , listening to this as I’m laying on the beach in Mauritius. . Does anyone know who’s playing the keyboard solo , sounds very much like Rick Wakeman to me . 🏖🌞
I remember the days Cliff was the lead presenter on the show and I really liked him. Unfortunately this avuncular gent is sadly no longer with us but his legacy lives on.
Cliff was the first presenter on the BBC , that I can remember as a young child . He was absolutely brilliant , sadly no longer with us . Rest in Peace Cliff .
I used to hate having to leave hearing this music on the programme as we had to head off to church when it was being played at the end more fully. I think I was allowed to hear it the very odd time. Now I have this to listen to in its entirety. I hadn't realised it was this long! The bits for me that make it exciting are: * the drum glissandi I think they're called * the virtuoso part from 3:01-3:23 - fabulous Thanks!
It's in the key of A major with a lilting time signature of 6/8. I am an amateur string player in an orchestra and possess perfect pitch, so know what's going on!
Given the era and his propensity for such things, it wouldn't be unreasonable to imagine that he might have been dressed in ladies lingerie whilst taking class A drugs, or planning to do so later at a party! Way to go Frank!
Better times and a better World free of the current desperate problems. The sea was fun, the sun was safe, travel was exciting and everywhere was exotic. Now Australia is burning, Norway melting, the population is out of control and war in Iran is looming fast. That we could go back to those times....😰😰😰

Loved this program as a kid and wished i could go on an aeroplane, we never did we went to Butlins
Very similar but we went to Pontins
We went to Torquay 😢
Oh God take me back! Life seemed carefree back then. New horizons, new adventures. Happy days.
Blimey, takes me back! Tomorrow’s World, Pebble Mill at One and Howard’s Way too. 😂😂❤❤
Tales of the unexpected, Brideshead, All creatures great and small
Who lived this theme tune?

Memories unlocked with this music 🙏🏻

not any longer!!!
I used to love this theme. Listening to it again , it's still nectar.
Memories of childhood dreams of flying to exotic places.
Gordon was sat in dads front room when he wrote this with Ralph McTell and Cliff Aungier too
Really? Wow!
I love this tune. It's so uplifting.
I heard Gordon isn't doing too well.
Is that correct?
@@gedofgont1006 to be honest im not sure, he went awol from old friends

Anne Gregg era, she was a great presenter and attractive. ❤ Sadly passed away some year's ago now x
There is some pretty awesome drumming in this song - never realised it at the time. No drum machines or sequencing here :)

Ace tune. Always loved this track. Thanks for posting!
Aha... the amazing Gordon Giltrap, "Heartsong". Classic.
We actually saw him a few years back performing at the social club opposite where I live and he played this.

The Zombies recorded a vocal version of this with the amazing Colin Blunstone on vocals.
Gordon giltrap... Thanks for reminding me

Oh! We used to dream of a caravan in Norfolk wi' no running water - would'a been a palace to us!😉
Luxury!
Used to love this as a kid and dream of going on holiday one day 🥰
Great musicianship!
When I used to see Anne Gregg on this show..........classy.
Sadly no longer with us.
Anne is no longer with us having lost her battle against cancer.
Completely agree with you Louish and i would also add that the old days are long gone!
Neither is Cliff or Jill
This programme became interesting when there was homework to do.

Gordon Giltrap - the greatest guitarist no-one's heard of.
NO-one? Don't be silly. He also did the themes from Holiday 87 and again for 88, which lasted a few years.
He was a guest appearance at a Rick Wakeman solo show I saw a few years ago. Quite brilliant.
Superb!
This Gordon Giltrap composition was in use when the late Cliff Mitchelmore (father of Guy) presented the show. RIP Cliff.
Would love to make this my ringtone

Cliff Michelmore what a real gent. Kevind Goodchild.

Anne Gregg............yum.....
this piece of music could be found elsewhere on RUclips by Gordon giltrap

Seems to go on forever, but you kind of want it to!

Wonder what Frank Bough would have really been up to when he presented this off camera?
Given the era and his propensity for such things, it wouldn't be unreasonable to imagine that he might have been dressed in ladies lingerie whilst taking class A drugs, or planning to do so later at a party! Way to go Frank!
Ironic its off an album called 'perilous journey' 😀
Did one of the Holiday series have "The Castle"without vocals by American band Love as its theme tune?
Yes, 1970.
Search for 25 Years of Holiday Programme, it's at the beginning.

Didn't one of the holiday programmes used to use George Harrison's Here Comes The Sun as it's theme?
I wonder if Big Country were greatly inspired by this theme when they wrote the crossing ?
Surprised Mary Whitehouse didn't complain about this.
No, but if it had been a nude man, she certainly would have...
Holiday ‘78’s original theme was Equinoxe Part 1 by Jean Michel Jarre, not this bland replacement.
