I remember seeing it back then too when I was a kid growing up in the Bronx. WPIX TV had all of great movies! Unfortunately the Preminger estate decreed somehow that this original film will not be shown again. I've been waiting for it to be shown on TCM but they can't get the rights.

@@paulsuchy6210The composer George Gershwin did not hate the film version of PORGY AND BESS that was made in 1959, because he died in 1937. Perhaps his brother Ira Gershwin, who wrote the lyrics to many of his songs, and who collaberated with the novelist and playwright Dubose Heyward on the lyrics to PORGY AND BESS, hated it, although this is disputed. The Gershwin estate has attempted, with significant success, to promote the performance of the complete, operatic version of PORGY AND BESS that George Gershwin originally wrote, which includes a lot more orchestral music and recitative replacing much of the dialogue heard in the movie. Suppressing the film seems to be part of that effort. Due to an unusual provision of the agreement that allowed to film to be produced, effective control of the exhibition and distribution rights to the film reverted to the Gershwin and Heyward estates (and presumably, to Ira Gershwin personally until his death in 1983) in 1974, and they have chosen to allow it to be seen only a few times in theatrical showings in New York, in 2007, 2010, and 2019. The good news is that at least a few high-quality prints still exist.

Sammy Davis, jr., as "Sportin' Life," absolutely sings for himself, although due to his record label's failure to come to an agreement with the label that had the right to release the Original Soundtrack Recording, his role is sung on the OSR by Cab Calloway (and needless to say, Cab Calloway's performance is also worth hearing).

@@bestdisco1979 In 2007, the film saw a theatrical showing when, on September 26-27, the Ziegfeld Theatre in midtown-Manhattan presented it in its entirety, complete with overture, intermission and exit music, followed by a discussion with Preminger biographer Foster Hirsch. The film was shown twice more in New York in 2010 and again in 2019. So you see the complete Todd-AO version DOES exist; it's just a matter of getting it more widely seen.
