Quick reminder: whenever you find that a product you are using is not hyram approved, please don't immediately throw it out. Try to finish the product unless its very damaging and when you do, recycle the container. We all know Hyram is also advocating for sustainability and throwing things out immediately because it's not hyram approved can go against this. This has been your Hyram PSA

My Skin Care Horror Story: When I was around the age of 8 a mole started to grow on my face, in the same spot as Marilyn Monroe. However, I hated it so much. So years later, when I was about 14, I finally got sick of it. I started putting lemon, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and so much harsh stuff to burn it off (yes Hyram, I want to book another therapy appointment after typing this). It wasn’t working so I went online and found some random “mole remover” cream. I applied it to my face like three times a day for months and eventually it started to burn off and scab. Eventually I had cut it off with a nail clippers and I now had an infected hole on my face. After months of fear, I finally got the courage to go to my dermatologist for advice. When I got there, his jaw dropped immediately and he told me that I would need to have an outpatient procedure right now. I was freaking out but, you know, this is my fault. So I laid down on the exam table and prepared myself. I had to get 6 shots of lidocaine in my face so I couldn’t feel the incisions. My dermatologist cut out a literal inch of skin damage. Apparently the cream had caused the original mole “roots” or whatever to hyper grow and develop cancerous deposits in my skin. I had 7 stitches and still to do this day have a scar.

Skin care horror story: I'm allergic to oranges and pineapples. Bought a face mask without reading the ingredients carefully enough. My face started tingling immediately and after 2 minutes was completely numb. Realizing something was wrong, I washed it off. My face was bright red and puffy. I checked the ingredients more closely, found sweet orange oil *and* pineapple extract. Immediately took a benadryl, put on some aloe vera gel, and a cool wash cloth on my face. The burn lasted a week before it faded. I had to reschedule an exam because my eye lids puffed shut 😒

In high school I had a friend that was really obsessed with Korean culture. While I was Korean and she was not, I knew of my culture and beauty standards, but I never really cared for it until she started to pick me apart.
I’m not sure if this was because she was insecure and seeing that I wasn’t “the beauty standard” of Korean women and gaslighting me made her feel better, but I’ve since gotten over it.
She would always point out how “dark” I was for being Korean, so she would give me “tips” on how to lighten and whiten my skin, made me feel SUPER insecure and I ended up using super chemical sunscreens, papaya soap for skin whitening, toothpaste as face masks, and dark spot treatment lotion (meant for dark underarms or knees, generally on the body) ON MY FACE. After 2 years of that and falling out with her, I have extremely thin and dry sensitive skin when I used to have oily and resilient skin.
Looking back, I regret it so much because I really did all that harm on myself for literally nothing. Having going through that, I can’t imagine how other POC get mistreated for their skin color. All skin colors are beautiful!!!

That's soo freaking bad of her and no one can change their skin color with all that creams and stuff the only way is a whitening treatment or certain treatments made specially for skin whitening there is nothing wrong with dreaming of a fair skin if it's their wish not because some else made comments about their skin tone, beauty isn't perfect and people need to understand this no matter what color they are or what they look like they are all humans and we should stop discrimination.

Get ready for the most traumatizing experience of my life:(this happened in Iran)
I had pretty bad acne when i hit puberty and tried EVERYTHING(even toothpaste) but nothing worked so i went on accutane at 16 years old because i was developing pretty bad acne scars. I got my perfect skin afterwards.
Fast forward 2 years later, my friend convinced me to go get a facial with her that she had heard about. “It is a traditional middle eastern facial” she said. I reluctantly agreed. WORST mistake of my life. We walked in and she took me in first(not letting my friend come with me) laid me down on a couch and immediately started her work without asking me anything like my skin type, what type of facial i wanted, etc... she took what she called an “egyption scrub” which she had made from SAND and scattered it all over my face without even CLEANSING at first. She then took a towel and rubbed it all over my face taking the scrub off. Then she proceeded by taking a rock which she said was hardened lava and rubbed it all over my face saying its going to remove the dead cells. After than she put some soap to clean my face completely and then proceeded to put a mesh on my face. When i asked y she said it was to protect my EYEBROWS AND EYELASHES!!! She then poured this mask she made from CHALK AND WATER and let it dry on my face. I felt so claustrophobic!!!! THEN AFTER THE MASK my face felt like the sahara desert, but lucky me bcz she was going to put an oil on next. Guess what oil it was? IT WAS VASELINE HAIRRRRRR OIL!!!!!! ITS LITERALLY WRITTEN ON IT ITS FOR HAIR THEN Y R U PUTTING IT ON MY FACE!!!! she slathered it all on my face then told me ok finish. I asked for sunscreen but she said I DONT NEED ONE!
Let me tell you the breakout i had after that facial was WORSE THAN MY ACNE BEFORE ACCUTANE. Thankfully i went to a dermatologist and she helped me fix it, but im terrified of any facials now

I was doing my make up every day for school, etc. to cover those pimples and blemishes and as I said, my skin was hella dry so the foundation was looking cakey af. So I took of the make up on those extreme dry spots and used a scrub on those areas AGAIN.. so at the end of a school day I scrubbed my face at LEAST once a day. I did that for MONTHS when not a year 😭

Skincare horroratory: this f** up my skin and I’m still trying to salvage it. ;( and the nicest part? It all happened with my dermatologists and estheticians encouragement. 😭😭 so- as a normal teenager I was fighting with my 3-5 pimples and searching for some help. I was told, by several specialists to use regular acne treatments, because my acne was purely hormonal and not at all that bad. I saved up my money (we didn’t have much so I choose not to eat lunch for months to save up) and bought the bioderma line for acne.
A week or two in to the regimen my skin got worse. I called my dermatologist and she said that it could happen and that patience is the key. (It’s true) another two weeks went by and my skin was screaming for help. I made my mom take me to the doctor herself, but I got the same answer. She gave mo some antibiotics for the obvious inflammation and reminded me to keep the regimen, otherwise this will all be for nothing. I was 14 (now 26) what did I know? There was no Hiram to tell me about listening to my skin! So I kept on going. And my skin got worse and worse..
Two years later i went on a exchange program and there met different dermatologist because I couldn’t find the products that I had been using. And he almost screamed at me: “why the h** did you kept on using them?”. He did some tests. And.. it turns out- i am extremely sensitive, almost allergic to salicylic acid. ;( I was so misinformed that I had been deeply ruining my skin for two whole years! I am still fighting the damage. ;(
Moral of the story? Patch test your products and believe your skins reactions more than anybody.

    Hold my acetone bottle.
    .
During college I once accidentally put acetone ON MY EYES... I came from a party in the early morning, I was still a little tipsy and very tired and sleepy. I wanted to quickly wash my teeth, remove the heavy makeup I had on and go to sleep. I actually had a rule that no matter how drunk I came home, I will always brush my teeth, remove my makeup (which included putting a moisturiser too) and undress/put on pyjamas, while the rest can wait till morning. And one day this rule backfired on me.
    .
Back then I was using eye&lips makeup remover from Nivea, it was before I learned about cleansing oils. So, I put the makeup remover on the cotton pad (or so I thought) and swiped it across my eye. The burning sensation was crazy and I was awake and sober in milliseconds. It turned out I accidentally picked nail polish remover instead of the makeup remover. They were standing next to each other and had a similarly shaped bottles. Luckily I had my eye shut well so nothing got into my eye. Also, acetone is water-soluble, so washing it off immediately in the sink with water actually took it off my skin. I had skin irritation for a couple of days but luckily no lasting damage. But damn.

  • @MaameAbaDaisie
    @MaameAbaDaisie 3 года назад +10

Once upon a time I was getting a facial at my local salon. Cotton pad over my eyes, I did not notice the aesthetician reaching for a bottle of CUTICLE REMOVER instead of cleanser. When I complained about the burning, she said "that's just the cleanser doing its work"
Eventually I demanded she wash it off and grabbed the bottle...my jaw must have cracked before it hit the floor. Come to find out Sis was illiterate and couldn't read. The brand she was using produced everything from facial cleansers to pedicure essentials and she in all honesty could not read the label.
I still have the scars on my cheeks from those burns and my skin is awfully sensitive several years after the fact. Oh and it took me 10 years to finally get another facial from a different establishment.

When I was younger, my friend and I were having a sleepover and she thought it’d be a good idea to put nail polish on her eyelids as eyeshadow. As soon as she started painting HUGE STROKES over one eye she started to feel the stinging past her eyelids and onto her eye. Now.... if you think that’s painful. Just imagine when she had to use the nail polish remover to get it off. HER EYELIDS!! Such a sensitive spot.

SKINCARE HORROR STORY- in about 7th grade I had these 2 pimples on my face. So like any middle schooler I looked up “hacks to get rid of pimples” and came across a ‘5 minute craft’ video. The girl had put Pepto-Bismol , YES THE TUMMY ACHE MEDICINE, on her face. As like a face mask. So me being dumb, I went to my parents medicine cabinet and grabbed it , and I lathered that on my face. I left it on for like 20 mins. Then I rinsed it off and looked in the mirror, MY FACE WAS STAINED PINK. so I tried scrubbing more and it just got worse. AND to make it even more worse, the Pepto-Bismol WAS EXPIRED 😭 I still remember the horror I felt

skincare story: about 1 year ago I was using the clean and clear daily exfoliating wash 😬 I was using it for a while until I noticed that my skin was turning red, swelling and itching. it was soooooo painful I was left with puffy eyes and a sore face for 2 weeks while STILL WEARING MAKEUP TO SCHOOL 😱 I was even wearing more makeup because I was trying to cover it up (it didn’t work) people said I looked like I had huge burns on my face it wasn’t until my hair and beauty teacher told me I should go to a dermatologist that I finally got it checked. the doctor had no idea what it was and prescribed me with 2 creams (diprobase as a moisturiser and hydrocortisone on the effected areas) they kind of worked but it still burned, my eyes were swollen for another 2 months. 😱 I now have really really really sensitive skin and need to watch what I put on it but I am lucky not to have any scars. I pray that it won’t happen again!!! ALSO I REALLY HOPE YOU READ THIS SO YOU CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVICE 😁

When I was about 12 I decided that I wanted to do all natural skincare. My family and I went to a creek and I collected a lot of moss, grasses and leaves. I mashed it and used it all as a face wash.

The next morning I woke up and my entire face was red and itchy and had swelled to almost twice it’s normal size. The worst part is that I had to go to go out in public looking like that and my karate teacher said I looked like a raccoon.

Well...I used this head to exfoliate my friggin nose lmaooo. I thought it would be a great idea since it softens feet, so it would definitely get rid of those dead skin cells. The result was a big red crust on the tip of my nose. I scrubbed away all the dead skin cells but also all of the still living ones.

So I ride horse and do rodeo, and I have always had a problem with blackheads cause I’m always out in dust and mud, and I also had some bumps on my chin I had for years. One night I got sick and tired of it and decided I was going to go in and try and scrap the blackheads off with my switch blade and the bumps, after I did it I was satisfied cause it was significantly reduced and the bumps were gone just a little red, but what I did not know is that the next morning my nose was covered in scans and so was my chin, I blamed it on my puppy. The bumps definitely did not go away and they came back with a vengeance I decided after that I would steer clean of doing anything with them after that, but a couple months later I had some how opened one of the biggest bumps on my chin and decided I was going to take what my dad used when he camps to take snake venom out of a wound and suck it the pus out of the bump, miraculously it worked and big Bertha has not been sighted since but her little sister still remains cause I have no idea where the extractor is.

SKINCARE HORROR STORY: when I was like 13 I used a face scrub that was intended for once a week use on my skin and followed up with 100% tea tree oil and lemon juice straight from a lemon, i also would make a honey and cinnemon mask and use that twice a week ( i honestly don't know where that came from). And no i didn't use a moisturiser or sun screen because I thought they "clogged your pores". Horrifying skincare story: I was in Vienna and I ran out of my moisturizer, so when I went to the pharmacy I saw CeraVe and it was in German and French. So I saw the French words “creme” and “hydrante” so I thought it was a moisturizer. I used it for 6 months, in those 6 months I started watching Hyram, so I thought why don’t I google translate what’s actually written on the product. It was actually a cleanser. I used a cleanser as a moisturizer for 6 months

What do you mean by products? If you're 13 you might not have hit puberty yet. If you're young, you don't need excessive skin care. So they're right. I mean, a gentle cleanser wouldn't kill you, but I wouldn't be gooping stuff on. You don't need it. If/when you develop acne is a different story, but a clear baby-skinned kid doesn't need products.

    My Skincare horror story:
When I was in 7th grade I started to get pimples and blackheads, so I asked my mom to go to the store to buy me some skincare. I ended up picking out this wash off clay mask not knowing you were only supposed to use it once a week. I used this as my cleanser everyday and I didn’t moisturize cause my face was oily, so I thought I didn’t need to moisturize. This really dried out my skin, so what did I do in order to help? I used a charcoal peel off mask thinking it would just rip off the dead skin cells and I did this every. Single. Day. Yeah I’m just gonna let you imagine the outcome

    My Skincare Horror Stories:
In my early 20s was extremely acne prone and I was desperate to clear it up.
I had heard that tea tree oil would help clear up acne. A friend told me to use it on my pimples to clear them up overnight. BUT since they were all over my face I wanted to clear up as much as possible. So I SOAKED several cotton rounds with 100% tea tree oil (oops) and literally taped them to my face. (I know...horrifying. It gets worse.) I wanted to make sure it had enough time to work so I went to bed with them on. I woke up about 6 hours later and my face hurt so bad, so I went to the bathroom and took the cotton rounds off. I had bright red circles all over my face because it burned my skin so bad. It looked like I had pepperoni all over my face. (Gives a whole new meaning to "pizza face") It took literal months to fade and I couldn't cover it with makeup because my skin was so damaged that it hurt to put anything on it. 10 years later my skin is still really textured in some spots because of how badly I fucked it up.

    Here’s my skincare horror story:
I used to use a heavily fragranced SALT rose scrub on my face. I’d rub it as hard as I could for like 3 minutes and then it’d sting after. I would stay red for a solid half hour. I would moisturize with Vaseline afterwards and I’d load it on my face. I wouldn’t use sunscreen and I’d never cleanse and I have normal to dry skin. It’s very sensitive and I’m prone to millia. I watched somewhere that exfoliating helps with it so I’d use it every few days to once a week. I thought the burning meant it worked and I assumed the Vaseline would help. I also occasionally use the clean and clear morning burst cleanser in the mornings and would just do that as my morning routine. I was 13-14 and now I’m 16 and my skin is doing WAY better.

(i obviously didn't cause i wanted the pimple to go away) THEN, we were at the beach for 8 hours. no sunscreen re-application or anything. i was red as a fire truck. we went to our beach house and fell asleep immediately . i was exhausted! i woke up the next day in excruciating pain ! i went to the bathroom to look in the mirror and the pimple was gone, (probably went away on its own) and i was peeling and red all over. i mean EVERYWHERE where my swimsuit didn't cover. i peeled it off and still have scars. it's almost been 6-7 years!

    My horror story:
When I just started getting acne/bad skin, I noticed that my skin was getting dry and it was peeling. Keep in mind that I never washed my face, like literally ever. So, I thought that using a “moisturizer” would help it..
I didn’t even have one, so I used EXPIRED *Bath and Bodyworks Christmas peppermint scented FOOT lotion,* and it had SO much fragrance in it. 😭 it made my skin so bad. It didn’t feel so bad at first, but I touched my face an hour later and it burned like HELL, and obviously ignorant me was like “that means it’s working.”
So, I kept using it for the next 2 days. My skin was so terrible.. I only stopped when my skin couldn’t take it anymore, and luckily I didn’t get acne, but my skin was still completely ruined. Thank GOD I finally managed to get my skin together, but still this story makes me want to cry.

My dog has a parting in his hair, so has skin exposed. If it's very hot he has to have sunscreen on his parting- I used to have this spray one for dogs. I was out for the day and forgot to bring my own sunscreen, so I used the dogs one on my face, arms, and chest. I thought it was all good as I ended up not getting sunburnt, but a day or two later I had the worst breakout ever on my face and chest. I had one pimple on my chest that was like an inch long and wide. It literally took months to heal and was so painful. I had a scar from it for years afterwards. Don't use dog sunscreen on humans.

Also, once while camping I decided to use antibacterial wipes on my face. I thought “hey acne is caused by bacteria so maybe this wipe will help.”

My skincare horror stories (some of them at least lol.. yeah it's been a journey):
    1. Mixed a salicylic acid spot treatment with pure tea tree oil, soaked some cotton pieces in them then put them on the acne I had on my face. Off the bat, they were burning like crazy (which I thought at the time was normal) but still knew to not keep such a potent concoction on my face for too long and planned to remove it within minutes......until I accidentally fell asleep in them. Woke up a couple hours later, still surprised that the cotton pads were still stuck to my face and in place... only to remove them and find my skin underneath completely chemically burned and coming off with the cotton pieces as well....(guess that's how the dry cotton bits at that point were still stuck to my face)
    .
I would smother those patches with foundation, concealer, powder..you name it, literally anything to hide them, and ended up causing it to get slightly infected which took over a year for it to heal and disappear into post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks.
    2. Found a dead sea salt clay mask in my Dad's fridge, which had been expired for YEARS but I didn't realize at the time until it was too late, smeared it on my face, and I might as well have smeared straight gasoline on my face and lit it on fire cuz that was exactly how it felt like for the 10 minutes I kept it on (as instructed) and stood in front of a fan to help the burning sensation (that should have been the indication to BLOODY ABORT MISSION but nope, thinking again, this is normal and means that it's working). When I removed it, my face was the colour of a tomato and cheeks were bleeding.... straight up, like blood coming out of my pores kind of thing.
It landed up completely RUINING my skin and I suffered from eczema on my cheeks and very sensitive skin for three years after that, not figuring out how to fix it until after years of research online, I learned what a skin barrier was and what ingredients and products to use to help fix it when it's compromised like mine was, Cerave PM is my savior.
Honestly thank god for you and the rest of the amazing skincare community for educating me and saving my poor face from the misinformation that caused me to inflict that damage over the years and help me heal it instead

    skin care horror story:
i had cystic acne for 2 years. I went to a dermatologists and she recommended me a facial scrub and benzol peroxyde spot treatment. That's it.
I literally used this peeling twice a day. In the morning and at night. My skin would bleed after every wash. So i used alcohol on a cotton pad to stop the bleeding.
i went in so harshly that my whole face was burning, red and so sensitive afterwards.
Again: i did this in the morning and evening. At night i used the spot treatment basically all over my face. I never used a moisturizer, never used spf. And the "peeling" was the only cleansing step i did.
To this day i have major scaring on my cheeks.
After watching ur videos and having so much knowledge on skin care now, i sometimes just wish i could go back in time punch myself in the face and throw that f*cking peeling out of the window. I would also love to punch my dermatologists in the face, not gonna lie.
Thanks to ur videos i am now so much more aware of the things i use on my face and i just wanted u to say thank you for ur content. I wish i would've found u earlier.

Alright, I think I win this one.
So when I was in seventh grade my skin was absolutely horrible (dry, tons of cystic acne, peeling skin patches, etc). I became desperate and decided to go the 'natural' route. Get ready for this.
I decided to take rubbing alcohol, tumeric, GREEN FOOD DYE, and hair conditioner and slather it on my face for about 30 minutes. My reasoning for the alcohol was to kill bacteria, I had seen tumeric on another video saying it was good for acne, the food dye because I thought staining my skin the opposite color of redness would make the red go away (color wheel stuff), and the hair conditioner would hydrate my skin.
I had a green face for about a week afterwards, and of course horrible acne. I wore pounds of foundation to school to cover up the green (obviously making the acne worse), and overall it was a traumatic experience. I should note I went on two rounds of accutane a few years later, and my skin is alright now.
Hope this qualifies as a skin care horror story!

My skincare horror story- 11 year old me started loving skincare so I stole a bunch of my moms skincare and started doing it everyday. Me not knowing what skincare even was, I slept with foundation on EVERY NIGHT because I thought it was a moisturizer, and never used cleanser but washed my face every morning and night with a makeup wipe, yep, makeup wipe 😭😂 It gets WAY worse somehow. I have diagnosed hypersensitive skin and I decided scrubbing my face with a sugar scrub EVERY NIGHT was a good idea. I did this for abt two weeks and then one day I woke up with what looked like third degree burns. My skin was blistered and burning red and was covered in puss. I didn’t tell my mom and SCRUBBED and POPPPED the blisters bc I didn’t want to get in trouble for stealing her skincare. She eventually found out and I had to pay her back for the expensive scrub that has ruined my skin to this day. Now I go to a dermatologist and watch hyram to help my skin :)

My skincare horror story: In 4th grade my friend and I were having a sleepover at my house and we both did full faces of makeup for fun. When it was time for bed, we had to take our makeup off. I thought mr. clean magic erasers we’re just sponges (I didn’t know they had tons of chemicals in them) and we both used them to remove our makeup. A few minutes after we finished our faces started burning and we had red marks all over our face. They stayed for like 2 weeks. My parents weren’t very happy 🙃

I saw loads of girls using those rotating brushes and of course I wanted one to. So of course me being 13 with no money, I went onto eBay and bought one from China for £3. It had some sponge and massaging heads then a brush. I had lots of acne scars so I figured I’d just exfoliate them off. I used this brush on my forehead for 5 minutes just letting it scrub it “clean”. With the neutrogena pink grapefruit wash too. Rinsed it off and thought I’d put some moisturiser on. I SCREAMED. It stung and burned so bad and my face was bright red. Every time I touched it it hurt. The wind on my skin even burned and nearly made me cry. Everything I put on it, even the gentlest moisturiser hurt. It took 2 weeks to heal and my skin got scaly. I stick with my hands and all your recommendations now.

Skin care horror story: Like a year ago I was going thru my bathroom draws and I had found a really old Lush coffee mask that used to be my sister’s (who had been out of the house for over 2 years and had left it behind) I was bored and was just about to get in the shower, so I was like I’m gonna use it cuz it’s almost gone anyway, it smelt so bad, that didn’t stop me tho as soon as I put it on it Lowkey burned but kept it on for about 20 minutes, I got in the shower and washed it off, right as I got out of the shower I looked in the mirror and my whole face was red, I let it slide thinking it would go away, went to sleep and the next morning my face was full of little bumps all over my face, eyes and neck I didn’t know what to do my face was red and so bumpy i wasn’t into skincare so I didn’t use anything on my skin besides makeup wipes and body wash on my face but after 3 long weeks it went back to normal, it was Lowkey traumatizing and I was suprised nobody pointed it out it was so baddd lol, anyways love you hyram 😚

When i was in middle school, I bought an acne treatment quad or trio (i forget how many treatments there were) from a company i had never heard of at Ulta because I felt really bad ab my preteen acne. It was all fine and dandy until one day, i applied the spot treatment as i normally would and went to sleep. I woke up that morning with burning red skin. It was so splotchy and sensitive. It went away fully maybe 2 weeks later (thank god). I looked at the bottles with my dad and realized that the active ingredient was benzoyl peroxide. I realized that i had suddenly developed an allergy to benzoyl peroxide and still get horrible reactions to this day when i use it (don’t worry I obviously don’t use it any more and pay attention to labels on skincare for that reason)
