  • Gallipolis, Ohio, is a charming town steeped in rich history and brimming with small-town charm. Nestled along the scenic banks of the Ohio River, Gallipolis has a story that dates back to the late 18th century when French immigrants, known as the "French 500," settled in the area. This unique heritage is still celebrated today, evident in the town's French-inspired architecture and cultural events. Gallipolis' downtown area is the heart of the community, offering a picturesque blend of historic buildings and modern amenities. Strolling along its tree-lined streets, visitors can explore boutique shops, cozy cafes, and family-owned businesses that have been serving the community for generations. The historic district is punctuated by landmarks like the Ariel Opera House and the Mound Hill Cemetery, reflecting the town's enduring connection to its past.

    My first husband and my daughter descend from Joseph Petit, one of the town fathers, who was an illegitimate son of Louis 15th. About 500 French aristocrats escaped from France just prior to the Revolution. This was a virgin forest sold to them by a land swindler. They were totally unprepared for the hardships. President George Washington sent some capable Yankee carpenters down from New England to build cabins for them. Lafayette's visit came later, about 1825 l think. Thanks for the great program!

    Ohio border with West Virginia is beautiful. Lots of trees and hilly country. Read that the Ohio River drains an area of 205000 square miles, the riverhas an average depth of 24 ft and the widest point is 1 mile. Barges and some boats can navigate most of the river.

My husband and I learned when we visited Marietta, OH -- East of your current location, but also on the Ohio River, and we had an excursion (boat ride) on the river. While it's called the OHIO river...it belongs to West Virginia. I thought that was odd, but there it is!!

We spent a lot of time on those swings facing the river. I wanted to have one to put in our yard. We listened to a calliope that they had set up in the park opposite of the swings not too far from the city sign you showed. I want to go back and spend more time.

    An excellent video in which you alerted me to a historic Wesh community in an area of Ohio I have never visited before. Doing a little research, I found the existence of the Welsh Scenic Byway, a 63 mile route starting from Gallipolis that takes in sights of Welsh interest in that area. Being Welsh myself and a US citizen I always look for historical connections to my home country in my travels around the US. I was planning to do some railfanning in Ohio later in the Fall so I will be adding this to my itinerary. Thank you for the introduction.

    Grew up visiting Ohio River towns every summer. We drove down old route 8. Either headed to Marietta/Constitution, or Steubenville. Visited Parkersburg and Wheeling in West Virginia. Loved stopping at the half way point for the best pie ever. Marietta had the Paddlewheel Boat on the river right behind Second Street near the Fair Grounds. Love those River Towns.

      @sherry1475 11 месяцев назад

      @@rockycoyote We went every summer once maybe twice. We visited up on the hill, above the railroad tracks. We could look across to the Ohio River. Later, they built a drive in theater right at the bottom of the hill. It was so steep going up the hill when it snowed, I am told they had to park their cars at the foot of the hill and walk up. Great Granny’s house was at the top of the hill. Aunt Beatrice lived on the right side going down. Later, when I was grown, Aunt Beatrice moved to the yellow house going down the hill. She lived even closer to the railroad tracks and right beside the church. The church was turned into a residence right before we stopped visiting Constitution. My grandma arranged a guided tour of the renovated church for me and my family when we visited one summer. My grandma and all he brothers and sisters grew up on the top of that hill. Her parents are buried at Gravel Bank. We also hade relatives in Marietta and Belpre, Ohio. My mom’s cousin, Aunt Beatrice’s son had a really good job there. His family still lives there. My dad graduated fro Marietta College. My two sons visited Constitution when they were little. So, I know plenty of people who visited Constitution. I could tell some good stories about driving in a caravan from Constitution to Marietta. There were too many of us to ride in one or even two cars. Lost of good memories. Stopping at Newcommers Town for pie was the highlight of the trip down old Route 8. I77 changed all that

      @@rockycoyoteWOW, so happy to meet you. Kind of thought we might be related, because Constitution is a small community. Grandma always called it, “down home.” I have read Glen’s book, and was supposed to get it, but that did not happen. Many of the pictures in that book came from my grandma’s collection. She traveled all over with Glen when he was writing that book. There is a picture of me and my family in Glen’s book. I am guessing we could have met when we were much younger. There was a big wedding in Akron with all the cousins about my age attending. So now you know why it was so important to visit Constitution all those times. Really nice to find you. There is a real creepy story behind the collapse of the original Silver Bridge as there were reports of a mysterious "mothman" being seen in the area. It's an interesting urban legend, although the bridge was also quite old and apparently not up to code. Meantime, speaking of Dallas, I live in Denton, which is about thirty miles north of Dallas, and if you get the change, check out the Buc-ee's in Denton. It's right off the I 35 E. Coming from Arizona, I had never heard of Buc-ee's before, but it's quite a place and they're all over the south.

    The first settlers were called the French 500. They came to this place first. Im not sure of the year. I heard a French relative on my dads side of family were part of that group. My dads mother is a daughter of the Revolutionary War.
