  • just starting up the Dakota after sitting outside all night. And apparently I have a squeaky belt/pulley issue. I could hear it a little bit inside the truck, but in this video it really comes through on the audio!

    Sorry that grill kills it for me. These have to be one of the sexiest trucks ever made though.... because I own 3

      It grew on me, I bet it looks better in person from standing perspective. I like my original stock one personally

    @1995dak lol. it's uh, in the title of the video. It's called a "whiplash cam" it's made by Hughes Engines, it's 222/228 duration @ .050, .544 lift, and 106 LSA

    Nice truck, my 99 ram with the 5.9 goes through a belt every year. It always starts squeaking in the late fall 45-30 degree weather. I've tried multiple brands and ended up with the same result. I'll slap a new belt on and she'll be quiet as a mouse, till next fall lol.

    @filbert383  11 лет назад +3

    Then I'll go with a different cam, maybe a 230/236° on a 110 LSA for a wider powerband. going with a wider LSA will help it pull higher, and going with a longer duration at the same time should keep overlap about the same, so it will still have a chop at idle. (but if your Ram is an automatic, you also have to consider the torque converter. going too big on a cam means you have to change to a looser stall. the Whiplash is supposed to work well on a tight/stock stall. --according to Hughes!

    Sure, I'll sell. $12 grand. haha. (I'm wrapping up a Viper T-56 swap, 4.56 gears and freshly rebuilt LSD install now, and the truck has Gen 2 viper front brakes on all 4 corners)

    even on the older LA engines, you don't need to drill the crank. the Dakota pilot bearing actually fits into the recess for the hub on the torque converter, unlike the old original brass bushings that the 833s used. I've used a Dakota roller bearing on a big block crank and didn't have to drill anything. Also, good point on the computer, but with SCT you can install a "manual trans tune" onto the original PCM, and not have any issues with CELs being on.

    Whoever told you that you would have issues does not know what they are talking about. you can get a Ram 1500 with a 5.9L/NV4500 manual trans. There are no issues with putting an NV3500 behind a 5.9, it's no different than an NV3500 behind a 5.2 you can buy all the parts needed at the local discount auto store -- flywheel, clutch, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, etc. only tricky part is to be sure you get a 5.9L flywheel, which you have to tell them you have a Ram 5.9L gas engine to find.

    Love the license plate. I feel like every real project vehicle has that nick name somehow. I know the 7 grand into my pickup is a little more than i expected.

    on the "Magnum" 5.9 and 5.2 (1992 on up multi port injection) there is no issues with the crank the person you are talking to is referring to the old school LA blocks (pre 1992) in that case you would run into issues being auto engines were not drilled for pilot bearings in your case swap away since your in the clear just be sure to swap the computer and engine harness as well since the pcm will flip when it cant find the transmission

    @benfoster21 well, that's a totally different beast all together if you want to go to a carb'd big block. I used to have a carb'd big block. but it would NEVER pass emissions anywhere. (lucky for me it never had to pass) the 5.9L in this blue truck is a small block. it's actually a factory engine option, and is still running on EFI, which is why it could pass emissions if all you had was an OBD-II scan check. unsure if it would pass a sniffer test on the actual exhaust though.

    Yup! with the 3.48:1 first gear in the NV3500, first gear is pretty much useless from a standstill on street tires. it does better if I roll out to about 10-15mph before opening it up all the way. My only complaint right now with the cam, is that it falls off pretty fast after 5200 RPM. I was hoping to pull closer to 6,000 RPM. I don't know if it's an airflow problem or just the cam specs. I'm going to port some stock heads and see if it pulls higher in the RPM range. If not...

      Is that a cast iron transmission. I bought a 94 dakota it has a 5 spd cast iron from what it looks like maybe a 3/4 ton . I have a 5 spd. Out of a 5.2 dodge ram 1500 . I've heard they are weak . Somewhat fearful it holding up in my 5.9 RT Dakota.

    • @filbert383
      @filbert383  Год назад +2

      At the time of this video it was an NV3500 transmission which is cast in aluminum with a integral bell housing. -the other factory manual was an AX-15 which is also aluminum but has a removable bell housing. The AX-15 was only good for 4-cylinders and V6; the NV3500 was ok for V6 and 5.2. It was only rated to 350 ft lbs of torque and a stock 5.9 makes 345. If you don’t put slicks on it at the track and your motor is stock, you’ll be ok. Beyond that, all bets off.
      I suggest watching my T-56 video and get ahold of Gerko to order yourself a TKX or T-56

      @@filbert383 sounds like it would hold up as a driver. I had a viper trans in my hands for a while. Should of kept it. Thanks for the reply

    @benfoster21 I do not have to get inspected here in Ohio, but there are no CELs, and no trouble codes, it would pass an OBD-II check where they plug in and look for codes. however, I do not know if it would pass a smog test where they use a sniffer on the exhaust. there's a lot of overlap, so I would imagine a fair amount of unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which may fail a sniffer test

    Seems like all the Dakotas had a idle problem when cold started even the V6 models. Anyway that is a nice truck.

      Not sure what you’re referring to. I’ve been around a bunch of dakotas of all engine varieties and never had an idle problem. From stock to highly modified. All idle just fine

    Could you possibly give me the specs on your build ? is everything else stock on your truck ? I want to get that lope with a cam and spring change only. I care nothing about power, performance or anything else, just the lope. And I would like to do it without changing anything else. Its a 97 dakota automatic with 318. Thanks for any info

      All you need to do is buy a Hughes whiplash (the cam used in this video) and Harland sharp roller rocker/retainer kit

  • @filbert383
    @filbert383  11 лет назад +1

    it's an NV3500 out of a 5.2L 5-spd Dakota...swap? buy a truck that's a 5.2L 5-spd from the factory! haha. (you can do the swap to an auto truck like an R/T just need all the parts from a 5-spd truck) but the NV3500 is only rated to hold 350 ft lbs of torque, if you've done ANY mods to the 5.9, you'll be on borrowed time, but I can also tell you have to do a TKO or T-56 swap. Shoot me an email if you want some more information on either of the 3 options.

    Your dyno test didn't show the torque & hp #'s numbers (not hashtags) what's the specs on the cam ? I saw your brake test also. That's a sweet reg cab

      Stock heads and stock trans it made 285 rwhp. Don't remember the torque. 365-ish I think.
      Edelbrock heads and T56 trans it made 325 rwhp 375 tq

    I am doing a five sped swap with a magnum 5.9 right now, and have heard i will have issues with the clutch/flywheel/pilot bearing area. Did you have any trouble? was the crank drilled for the pilot bearing? Did you use a manual flywheel for a 5.9? I have a nv3500 also. please respond!

    Do you Have OBDII plug in to get it inspected? 1996 and newer has to be plugged in to pass inspection in NY. Not sure how to get around it on my 97 dakota?

      I don't have the cam number but it's an older whiplash grind from Hughes. They've changed the specs but this one is 222/228 @ .050, 107LSA, +4 advance ground in, .544 lift.
      I'm running factory EFI that's tuned by Flyin Ryan Performance.
      I've had B&G flashed tunes, Hemifever tunes, and now Flyin Ryan. Ryan is by far the best.
