  • This is a 12-gallon long tank made by Aquatop that I got from Flip Aquatics. It is considered a "bookshelf tank" because it's thin enough to fit on a bookshelf. It is a blackwater setup with two wild betta mahachai and two baby bristlenose plecos.

    Kill all the other lights in the room before recording. Also, floating plants! They'll give your fishes the cover they crave and make recording easier.

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  4 года назад +6

      Minus the temp light I put on there for filming, the tank is too low light for floating plants, I've tried water lettuce and duckweed and both died (the low light plants in the tank are doing fine though). I need to look into adding another light source..but I'm experimenting with what will look nice

    It's ok even the fish didn't show up, so long as they're happy in their tank. Which I believe to be the case. You did a great job with the 12 gallon long - such a luxurious looking blackwater setup! 👍👍

    From the curve on your 'lid' on the 12g long you used acrylic (aka plexyglass).. Not a good idea if you want a decent lid, even thick acrylic (I tried 1/2" thickness) will still curve at the corners from heat/humidity letting all inhabitants easily escape to a death on the carpet if they're so inclined.
    I'd like to recommend polycarbonate (Lexan at Home Depot) it may cost a little more but it's a lot less warp-you can use same cutting method (may take a little longer) or a high tooth count saw works well. Glass is best for no warp factor of corse...but too shatter prone for someone like me, so all my (non riparium) tanks have Lexan lids!
    Beautiful male mahachai! I wish I could find one 'local' bred in the US (when its not.. freezing outside..)

    • @quesoranchero
      @quesoranchero 4 года назад

      Aqua Aurora i was about to comment about using Lexan for sure. There is a vender on Amazon that will also make precision cuts at a cost. Lexan is the way to go for sure.

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  4 года назад

      I'll look into polycarbonate. I wanted to go with glass but I don't know a place where I can get it cut..yet. ^_^

    Oh wow, this is a gorgeous tank! I'm currently in the process of switching my setup around. I have a 15 gallon column tank setup as a community tank and I also have a standard 10 gallon. The 10 is currently empty as I just lost my little buddy Cloud, he was a white and sky blue half Moon King Betta. So since now is as good as any I want a 20 gallon long that I plan to attempt at making a community with a King Betta and a bunch of smaller peaceful fish. I really like the short height but long and wide profile like yours. Gives a lot of viewing area as well as usable footprint to scape with.
    Good job, that tank looks absolutely stunning!

  • @justacraftyyam1506
    @justacraftyyam1506 4 года назад

    That tank is gorgeous. I've always wanted one but I'd need to make a good spot for it and for that price it feels like a waste since my scaping skills tends to lean towards balls of java fern tumbling around with the current, big mats of java moss that fill the entire tank or sprawling pothos vines that cover everything.
    You could make a couple lids out of plastic canvas just for the gaps. Stitch on some side pieces that will keep it from sliding off or into the tank. It's not pretty but it's a cheap temporary solution and you can easily cut holes for the plants/wood sticking out of the water.

  • @devondrayton4006
    @devondrayton4006 4 года назад

    To reduce the glare you could improvise a curtain. Home Depot and Lowes sell extendable, spring enforced rods for attaching plastic barriers for containment walls while doing construction in homes. Three of those and a black curtain would work behind you. The thing about these extendable rods is that you can clip the curtain to the end and extend it to the ceiling fast and easy and the spring holds it tight to the ceiling. You could even leave the curtain clipped to it and take it down in a matter of a minute and store it in a closet.

    You could possibly paint your shelf black and then the light wouldn't be reflecting the white onto the tank when you're doing closer shots like when you showed your male Betta. Also a black foam poster board behind you when filming placed to minimize glare could work. Both are relatively cheap options and that would probably fix a good portion of your issues with the glare. Good luck! And beautifully done tank 🙌

    It probably isn't helping with the fact you stood the tank on white furniture? I had the same problem... I fixed it by covering the exposed white surface with cardboard, onto which I siliconed the same substrate/stone fragments that were in the aquarium. That immediately fixed the white reflection of the cabinet top - and looked fantastic. Adding a handful of small air plants and very small wood pieces took it a step further: making the whole surface a natural extension of the aquarium.

    You need to get a giant set of fairy wings and when you record just throw a black cloth over them so whenever you move with the camera it will be black behind you and there won’t be any glare because you’ll be blocking all of that, plus... fairy wings! If that doesn’t work you’re going to need a very tiny submarine camera
    Also you should make a cardboard template, just cut cardboard with a big hole around the driftwood sticking out and just tape a little pieces until you get the shape you really want and then use that as a template to cut your plexiglass, you could even make it in a couple of different parts to get around the Driftwood area and the filter.
    You could seriously get the hanging curtain, they sell tracks that you can put on your ceiling, kind of like those curtains that go around the beds at the hospital but you could make a black one and just put a straight track on your ceiling to make a backdrop behind you when you’re filming your tanks and then it’s just a curtain you can push out of the way when you weren’t filming. 🤔.

    My first Galaxy Koi male jumped out of his tank the other day. I had just switched from a tetra whisper cartridge filter to a small sponge filter w/media and I forgot to cover the big hole that was left in the lid for the big boxy filter. The worst part is, I'm pretty sure I heard it happen when I was getting ready for bed. I thought it was a stinkbug or something settled because I just heard a little tap over on my dresser. It didn't even cross my mind that it was my fish. When I woke up he was nowhere in his tank, but behind my dresser, totally gone. I cried... The poor baby. His name was Pokey and he had a red spot on his head. He was so derpy and cute TT___TT I FEEL SO BAD

    I’m setting up my betta tank. I have a 5 gallon tank. What heater and filter would you recommend? I bought a filter the flow is low but it takes up a decent amount of room. The heater is an old preset right now my thermometer says its70. I will be going to the gcca on the 12th.

      Maybe you can buy a new heater? Bettas like 78 to 80F. The GCCA swap might have some heaters. Depends on which vendors come this time.

    Hi, I love your channel! I was wondering if you could help me, I'm getting a Betta for christmas and I was wondering if I should get 2 females are 1 male. I have a ten gallon tank and I'm not sure witch to choose. I have had a Betta in the past so I know how to take care of one. Even though I still consider myself a begginer.
    Thank you!

      Hi! I think getting one male would be a great idea. Since its a 10 gal that opens hp the future possibility of adding a few peaceful tank mates. With 2 females, unless u have a divider...there is the risk that they could kill each other.

    Did he ever jump out? I’ve got a 9 gallon book shelf tank that I want to move my betta into, but there’s no lid for this tank. DIY ones aren’t ideal but maybe.

    I believe the room lighting and tanks behind you are creating the glare. Try turning them all off, and shooting in the dark room you should be getting a decent shot.
