It’s such a pity that these wild type of Bettas isn’t more seen in the trade. It’s the fancy Bettas that is to be found in the stores. Well, here in Denmark at least. So far the only Betta I’ve found is the Betta imbellis, which I obviously bought four of to take home. They’re still in the growing state, but hopefully there should be a pair out of them. Fingers crossed.
I bought a betta from a pet store that looks to be a wild type. He's so thin and pale though, that I think it's going to take time for him to get his color fully back and see what type he is. I think he may be an imbellis but not sure.
@@quaaquatics9416 yup! he's definitely an imbellis! within a week his color started coming back and after three weeks he looked incredible. His fins are a bright red and indigo and his body glitters with teal scales. He turned out far better than I could have imagined! So happy for the little guy. He's very active and lives in a 5 gal with some shimp.
But what did those bettas used for gambling in Thailand evolve from? Were they those fish that were just picked from the wild or did they go through a long course of evolution and conditioned for fighting? When did plakats diverge from wild bettas?
They went through selective breeding too, rationally once you have a strong fish, and assuming you know how to breed Bettas, most likely you breed them, as for when, if historical records are to use, maybe about 150++ years ago selective breeding started in South East Asia. The fancy Bettas were started in the west in the 19th century ( Introduced in France around 1890+), so relatively not very far from then. This video is based on genetic analysis of the fish and researchers found out that the time range should be between 1000 to 10000 with 4000 quoted as most likely.
@@NovitaListyani Thanks for the quick response. So, do you mean that today's fighting bettas diverged from the wild population around 4000 years ago and have been used for fighting since 150+ years ago?
@@Someone-zx7xd people started keeping bettas around 1 thousand years ago but weren't serious about it until the 1800s when people realized they could make money from fighting fish. The betta types you see in the pet stores are 100% hybrids. The common betta is considered to be a combination of 3 species.
No, unless they grow up together, even with that condition met, you still need a very big aquarium with enough plants and other hiding places for the weak ones to hide.
Imbellis Bettas, while relatively smaller, are actually very aggressive, so extra care must be provided if you want to put them together. Dennisyongi Bettas, Simorum Bettas are more suitable for single species tank.
Hope wild betas get popular enough to get humanely mass produced. It's not looking good though cause COVID shut down the supply lines and they're already exotic betta imbellis with dark blue. That exotic one I want but it's probably not good for the ecosystem.
Actually the Betta that you see in the pet store trade is a combination of 3 betta species. Virtually all of them are hybrids in the pet trade so breeding pure wild ones and keep the babies separate from other betta species is a good way to keep them going.
Dulu waktu kecil aku sering nemu cupang liar di sawah tp sekarang gak pernah nuin lagi.. Ikan cucut pun di sungai sekarang susah di temuin padahal cantik
5:31 YES! So many hybrids are mistakenly sold as the wild pure species, when in fact they are hybrids. This is ruining the hobby and messing up the gene pool for people looking for pure species. I think wild lines can be preserved in captivity if we don't inbreed them too much, making sure to outcross them often when breeding, and advocating for outcrossing fish to reduce inbreeding as much as possible. If more people do this, they will remain healthy for the long run, often times people capitalize and exploit their resistance to inbreeding, so they opt to inbreed their fish by breeding sibling pairs for generations. I sincerely people don't mess this up this time.
Finally someone with the proper explanation of the origin of the word "Betta". The general explanation of the word originating from a warrior tribe is so misleading
i have five wild betta in my house. imbellis silver (hybrid), smaragdina guitar, smaragdina buriram, splenden spadetail and original imbellis that i caught in paddy field.
Really nice documentary / educational video on betta fishes.

These are really rare.
I thought relaxed is lepak and not beta? Not a malay word I reckon. It's some other language, bahasa and malay is different
AWesome video!
Thanks! Wow, you have many great videos on your channel 🙏
❤❤❤
Can you also house betta imbellis in one tank?
No, unless they grow up together, even with that condition met, you still need a very big aquarium with enough plants and other hiding places for the weak ones to hide.
@@NovitaListyani thank you for clarifying it. i really though we can keep them in a community tank since most of competitions requires pair wild betta

Wonderfull colour Betta fish is the best
Underrated bettas. Shame most people only have interest in fancy domesticated ones.
Very informative
For me, wild betta is more interesting.
i agree with you. they are unique and special.

At least domestication is better than death. The original cows went extinct now we just have domestic cows.
They have a lot of beautiful colors

Great, educational video 🐟
So wild betta splendis looks almost the same as betta imbellis?
No. Imbellis has a red border on the tails and are a bit less aggressive.
I’m working on a botanical style riparium atm and hopefully will be getting a wild splendins!

No Betta Patoti ? Really I breed them lol
Unsalted dried fish on the floor
but Imbellis is also found in the wild in Cambodia, Thialand ect.
Betta imbelis? They scattered around my sewer
Beta is very beautiful fish
i wish your vid was longer.
Wrong on the Wild Splendens. They are not native to Indonesia instead they’re more so native to Thailand.

Betta Fish
Cupang saya biasa aja, ini mah top 😂😂
IT'S ACTUALLY PRONOUNCED "BET-TAA" NOT "BAY-TAA"
Both are right
