Akufo-Addo: Africa's march of democracy hard to reverse - Talk to Al Jazeera

  • Typically associated in international media with political instability, disease, poverty, corruption, dictatorships, and a lack of human rights and democracy, African countries struggle to deconstruct the stereotypes.
One of the few exceptions seems to be the Republic of Ghana.
Ghana today - at least on the surface - is enjoying political stability, with a multi-ethnic polulation coming together in peaceful democratic elections.
President Nana Akufo-Addo speaks with Al Jazeera's Jane Dutton on why his country is so different from its neighbours in this respect - and what work still remains to be done in Ghana and in the rest of the continent.

Mr. President Akufo Addo of Ghana, I salute you for your excellent performance in dealing with the International Press .
The answer pertaining to homosexuality on Al Jezeera TV, was intellectual , far-fetched and apt to the question.
We should learn to think with the president, not think against him.

I am from South Africa and I must say its encouraging to see that in this continent, we have leaders like Nana Akuffo Addo. This guy is selfless and determined to help improve and advance the socio-economic situation of his people. He is a thinker not a looter. African countries must be careful not to be manipulated by the corrupt and elite from the US & Europe who dictate and force government in Africa to go against their people in order to loot natural resources while people go hungry. Africans need to wake up and stand together because "you/we are not free". US & Europe still dictate......Amen

Anubiez Black you know the way homosexuality is treated in Africa is so heart breaking it could make me cry. I always fear for the lives of homosexuals in the continent. But in reality what he said isn’t a lie. A decade ago America wasn’t nearly as open to homosexuals as they are today, and even at that the VP of the USA is a known supporter of conversion therapy for homosexuals. The government can do what it wants on the matter but the society has to collectively come together to accept it

The issue of Gay rights don't exist because there may be deviants in Ghana but gays as in the West, No. The West has had in their culture the practice for centuries until more recently (200 yrs ago), even to include the Gays in priesthood. In Ghana the government has no role of determining culture and moral practices, so the government cannot just ignorantly pass a legislation over something that is none issue. These deviants rightly exist and like everyone else function with the framework of a constitutional protection. Should Ghana also pass legislation to allow pedophiles to operate with the protection the law?

So, I see a few peeps and the general media placing quite a lot of focus on our leaders in Ghana as the main architects of where we are today, if Ghana is to be deemed as doing relatively well in the region. Truth is in Ghana itself, the population do not place that much equity or respect on it leaders and I think that's where the beauty lies for us. Just as this president said, it's rather 'the people' that have fought, engaged and put us unto the path that the country is on. Every leader that has gotten into power since our current democratic dispensation, it has been 'the people' that have been able to push and demand for a certain progress and forced leaders to act towards what the country wants and needs. So much so that if one was to put a 'goat' in power in Ghana today, this 'goat' will still be made to deliver and if it doesn't it will surely be ousted quicker than one can say 'leader' and a replacement found that actually does the job.
Nana Addo, isn't seen as the be and all in Ghana and I think this is quite a healthy dispensation for the country. The leader that does well in Ghana is the one that delivers what the people asked for. 'The people' are the boss in Ghana right now, and that's who the focus really should be on, in my humble opinion.

I once met a group of 4 Kenyan's who were here to study our government and how things ran... like businesses. I wonder what became of their lives and what things they were able to change for the better in their nation. Geez that was 50 years ago.... These men would be very old by now! Isn't it amazing how all those young experiences are so fresh as we age.

A particular Africa state cannot be said to be doing well when majority of African countries are not, don't be deceived by western propaganda that Ghana is doing well, don't get me wrong, I love Ghana and the amiable , outspoken president they have but the totality of African development and transformation in a gigantic manner is the key to elevating the status of Africa and Africans within and in diaspora, we need more of Ghana and Akufo Ado in Africa.

I found this interview to be someway disappointing because of the arrogant allure of this interviewer. The woman frequently interrupted H E President Akufo Addo who is a head of state! I felt her tone was very disrespectful. The interjection of such notions as, " democracy means different things to different people", for example, is to ignore the basic tenets of any United Nations. I Also Did not understand Why she insists on practically switchi g thé subjex as hé was in thé process of answering
would hope he or any other leader would benefit from her enhanced appreciation of this role she has to manage a simple humility to human rapport. Anywhere

I wonder why these global news organizations such as Aljazeera , BBC.... only interested in interviewing African and poor nations' leaders only?? You do not do such kind of interviews with ''big nations'' leaders such as USA, UK, France.... Why???

What i don't get from this interview is it's objectives. The interview's objective, is to locate loopholes to exploit and weakened Africa's unity before it even starts, simply because it poses a real threat economically. We as Africans are fully aware of our weaknesses, as a result of us being divided. It is time for Africa to unite and gi its people the dignity, respect, equality and equal footing on the global arena. We are Africans from Africa just like Europeans from Europe and Asians from Asia. The rest of our challenges will dissolve as soon as the 54 countries agree to be ruled by one president under one flag, using one currency and passport.

Sixty years of colonialism ,under what european country? Is colonialism one of the reason Africa is suffering? Is white supremacy one of the reasons that Africa countries don't have a competitive currency on the world market ? Why isn't that Africa being the richest continent on the planet, has the highest rate of poverty on the planet ? No disrespect. Just questions.
