But beyond the five-star resorts, turquoise waters and white sand lie major geopolitical interests.
The archipelago has turned into a political battleground for India and China.
As preparations for president-elect Mohamed Muizzu's swearing-in ceremony on November 17 get under way, Talk to Al Jazeera travels to Male, the capital of the Maldives, to find out how regional dynamics may change under his administration and what this could mean for the country and its people.

I am for the Maldives to choose what is best for her as India should do what is best for her. If you want 'India Out', send all Indians out. We are willing to reciprocate. Third, may you not train any Indians (if any) and let India also do the same. Let us have no contact. We have other giants like TATA and Reliance also working with the country, like adani does,to further our countries' strategic interests and realise economic goals.
@@casualviewer8792 Their businesses are to a percent based outside but their market is India. So for the next 20-30 years the Indian economy will move slow and steady. I don't see a possibility of sudden boom or a sudden fall. It will grow as the country diversifies from agriculture to manufacturing while keeping it's already functioning service sector steady. In every country there will be a few companies that are too big to fail and they are the ones who bring foreign technology and R&D into the country which gradually percolates to other large,medium and small scale businesses. Profitability is not the only motive of such buisnesses. In the case of China's evergrande even though it was in a very bad shape the govt stepped in to save the company as they can't afford the collapse of such a giant. Likewise, profitability though is very important they need not worry much as the Indian economy is behind them. We as taxpayers have to take the burden but we also understand that some burdens also benefit us.

As a Singaporean, I can fully understand the correct attitude that you have because we here in Singapore is also very sensitive about our sovereignty when we are too near geographically to a large neighbour, especially if it proves in the past to be interfering with her smaller neighbours' domestic politics.
Maldives should naturally NOT want to be under any foreign military presence in her own land, as there is always a danger that if a more ambitious government that craves dominance in her region.
The problem with having foreign military inside one's territory is that, if in future, for whatever potential reason the neighbouring leader may turns hostile, then it is very possible that the foreign military may covertly work from the inside to pose a real security threat! Never say never, it wise to be wary, even if right now they seem like "angels".
This President-elect seem to be an honest and good man.

Singapore itself has agreed to hose US Military base pact till 2035. It grants US forces access to Lion City’s bases anytime it wants.

He wants all the help from India - debts forgiven, more investments, more tourism, more security from pirates, smugglers etc, while his govt spews insults and abuse towards Indians and asks Indian troops(who provide security and stability) to leave his country. So he is basically a beggar who wants to receive but can't reciprocate with gratitude or goodwill.
If a small move more, Maldives will suffer like Pakistan no trade, including no medicine. Also, if they allow Chinese troops, that will be seen as a threat. There is a huge remittance from tourists from India. Most Maldivians come to Kerala, India for medical treatment. Most of the items are shipped from India ti Maldives as they hardly cultivate anything.
Don't worry. The people will riot if there's even the slightest discussion of Chinese military presence here.

when Maldives economy was brink of collapse because of Chinese loan taken at huge interest rate in 2018-19 India gave Maldives financial assistance package of US$ 1.4 billion. in 2022 India did the same to Sri Lanka when their economy were collapsing because of loans by China at high interest rate.

The interviewer try to drive a wedge between India and Maldives. Indians were in Maldives to protect their interest of the then Maldivian Govt. The new dispensation wants Indian troops out and India will move as per the wishes of Maldivian people's mandate. As India is a democracy, so is Maldives. India is available as and when needed. A Qatari Channel's democracy only rests in Television Studio period. Once you are outside the studio, its only interest groups.

This is a prime example of poor journalism. The President of Maldives appeared quite reasonable, and it seems that he, along with the Indian counterparts, is collaboratively addressing most issues. The reporter repeatedly used the word "threat," although the president did not use such language. Similarly, the reporter mentioned China multiple times, whereas the president did not. This appears to be an attempt to incite anger among Maldivians and Indians. Previous generations of Maldivians worked hard to foster friendly relations with India and the world to attract tourists and support their economy. Unfortunately, one report, along with a few ministers, has destroyed decades of trust-building. I extend my sympathies to the previous generation.
