I finally found it!it took me alot of research to get here. I had this hole 1 hour recording back in the exclusive dub machine getting paid $10 for copies of it.
Awesome break jam indeed! Big ups to Jazzy Jeff! I'm a self certified "beat head", and "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly and Life was one of the hardest one's for me to find, even after internet? Mainly because I didn't know the title or artist of this song I'd heard, and heard sampled so many times. Then one day around 2002-2003? I happened into a Tower Records, and copped a compilation CD that had "Hip Hop Be Bop" by Mann Parrish on it. (Another cut that I couldn't find for years!) When paying for it, dude at the counter turns me on to a hole in the wall record shop just up the street, "Dr. Free Clouds". Just by the name, I knew it was gonna' be cool. Spent about an hour in there that day, and among a couple other tasty bits, walked out with my long sought after 12" copy of "Hip Hop Be Bop", AND "Dance To The Drummer's Beat"! Both in one shot! I was totally ecstatic!!!
This really is an amazing bit of scratching when you think about it. Way before we had 'quick cut' on the fader, it used to literally fade in and was only at full level when in the centre, to get quick, precise & sharp cuts like this the fader had to reach the middle, that's skme quick hand movement... ..(unless he was using the 'phono/line' switch).. Which I doubt as his favoured mixer was the old Gemini purely because of it's x'fader. He has some serious DJ skills then and now.
rakim said MC means move the crowd. The crowd was hype and he was a philly cat comin in to NY. Any notion that this guy couldn't rock a crowd is just hate. No he's not GZA, but he did what many can't do and he bigged up his DJ everytime and you can't front on Jeff Townes.
the cup Fresh Prince is holding on the cover is the cup Jazzy received for winning the Seminar World Championship in 86 (I know the pic is too small to read the writing on the cup)
Much respect to that opinion. I was there too, and I remember when I heard Eric B & Rakim on the P fine show with Olivio G, Gregg Nice got his record scratched off by Magic (RIP), Pfine. But this was real crowd control and participation, and 20 y/o Jeff and 17 y/o Prince did it on this one. Touch of Jazz was top ten in 87 on the BLS countdown too. To me he didn't sell out back then. Glad you speaking for the tru school, cuz alot of people liking todays music just dont understand this
Yeah I think they tried too much to be like Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, I saw both crews live and jazzy & the prince put on a great show, Cash Money was dope though, No Doubt!!
Oh, don't you love that horror on seven minutes and fourteen seconds? And than the realization at seven twenty one: "Noooooo, not on this tape!" Happened to me many many times.
@palomino13 me too, but I'm lucky to think that I'm one of the fortunate few to have recorded it live on the radio the night this magic took place ! One of musics best live performances to date..
As the person who recorded this and begged Mr Magic to play it cause it was so incredible to see and hear what Jeff did, hearing this version off the radio gives me a different perspective. It makes me happy to know that this recording lets people know where they got it from, no matter when they hear it. RIP Magic. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I tell the story of how this tape came to be and the whole backstory. The original tape is alive and well with other unheard classics. Check me out on instagram. Salute!
@@RomSpaceKnightthe stage was in front of the booth. But it wasn’t really a booth. It was a separation from the stage. Prince was in front of us and Jeff was on the floor next to the stage.
@bigsotouba Jeff is awesome all the way through this, one of the best live sets i've ever heard and I've heard a lot. This was light yrs ahead of its time.
Cosmic Kev, disco rat, grand master nel, b-force, bobby dance, sex machine, breakwater, parry p, Robbie b, Eddie t, five turn tables and two drummers, and the ussy, the money and the mic. Philly Moon
I wonder why "the official" track by Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince is sped up? Jazzy Jeff or "whoever" using one of the oldest tricks in the book by speeding up the recording giving the illusion that is faster and fresher than it actually is. This is the actual speed right here. Still dope.
nah, to me it just shows how political ideals go into and out of fashion. we all always thinking we behaved like cavemen not too long ago. 50 years ago they will be saying the same thing about us right now regarding something we deem silly right now.
never knew that there was more of this recording than what appeared on that 12" b-side nor that it was apparently Mr. Magic that introduced them.. Was this an outside event?
Cheryl Lynn is about right regarding the 1st sample. But there must be ANOTHER version around with the line "Take it back to the old school, take it back to Union Square". Haven't been able to track this down yet ... but this IS Union Square! So were they MC'ing two times on there?
mc's are also supposed to have rhymes. but i guess thats only in ny where it started. he has no rhyme skills at all everything he ever did was commercial bullshit for him to make it to where he is now.hey aplan is a plan! There will never be another golden era.
The performance solidify Jeff as the baddest DJ on the planet. This was with records.
Philly DJs were kings in this era.
R.I.P. Mr. Magic (the dude who introduced Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince to the stage on this recording)
"Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly and Life
One of the most bad ass breaks I've ever heard. Thanks Jazzy Jeff.

when I heard this back in the day, it inspired me to be a dj. I've always had mad respect for jazzy jeff!
at 2:48 was for me one of the greatest moments in hip hip culture that changed the game, the first time i heard this back in late 86

Remember hearing this on the London airwaves in "86 pushed out by Tim Westwood. Fresh as leaf

At Union Square where was Red Alerts DJ booth located from the stage? Was it behind the stage or on the balcony in front? Anyone know that was there?
