Why is there so few physics teacher doing this experiment? That's a mistery to me. Pendulum is almost always used with a single pendulum and Newton's craddle which is much more complicated. This configuration should be employed much more. This is how third law was born or corroborated. Newton knew that speed is approximatly proportional to the cord between the rest position and lower point. This would be usefull to discuss the choosen and obtained velocities after each colisions. 0:31 a moving ball and a ball initially at rest with aproximate exchange of velocities 1:24 simetrical configuration with oposite velocities 1:37 unequal velocities (lower ball has about half cord and speed is therefore half the other ball in the collision)
@@malawigw it can be done with smaller balls too! It would just be less impressive but physics would be great too! I modified my initial comment to clarify why I am surprised.
0:36 identical mass , elastic collision.... interchanges velocity, the one that was at rest now moves while the one moving comes to rest. im in 11th and i just wanted to see this in real life. wow thank you
he said "I am gonna let the higher one first", but professor, you should let them at the same time to make them meet in the middle, you know there is no relationship between height and frequency. They both have the same frequency (the only problem is air friction, which is not that important)
Nice catch, I realized it this year when I did it in class. They are simple pendulums and have the same period, amplitude shouldn't affect the time. Technically the one with the larger amplitude has a larger period, with a small angle approximation they are the same. I decided not to change it since it is technically correct AND to see if some sharp viewers would catch it!
@@kilroi22 it is true in a very good fisrt aproximation for this amplitude but not exactly. Galileo thought it was exactly the same time, independent of amplitude. Mersenne disagreed with him based on empirical measurement. Huygen then explained this theoritically.
The velocities interchange in the center of mass frame of reference even if the masses are different! This makes solving elastic collision problems much easier: ruclips.net/video/jGZ8Tf6Gv6w/видео.html
Yep. In a vacuum (free of air resistance and sound waves) this would go on for a long time, until they wear eachother out from friction. And if you forget friction too, it would do it forever!
Interesting video. Also you could find a lot of Bowling Balls at Pro Shops in Most Bowling centers but you can’t get them immediately cause Pro Shop guys requires you to have your ball drilled before buying it.
sir-"as in elastic collisions ,mechanical energy is not transformed into some other form of energy like sound or thermal energy". But in above shown example we can see sound is coming after collision. Can we see it as a violation for the above fact????
Dear Professor, But what about the velocity of sound then??? Even though there is elastic collision the velocity of sound remains constant how this is possible if it's not possible in case of two colliding elastic ball
If one is considered at rest lets say the one with twice the mass then The one with twice the mass will move with 2v/3 of the first ball while the first rebounds with 1/3 of its initial velocity.....;)
@@ceilingfanenjoyer8572 Why does the lighter ball reboud though ? Wont it just stay still like the demonstration . I'm just confused trying to look for reasons
This 2 mins of explanation takes my teacher about a week. Excellent demo, sir. We except teachers like you
Thank you, prof. Burns. Your visualisations and explanations are extremely spectacular.
Thank you very much, Professor! What an excellent demonstration!
Good job, thank you! So much better when we can see it in action.

Not everybody can do newtons cradle with bowling balls in their classroom :)

An exchange of velocities demo gets across info. very fast. Thanks

Thanks!
It is beautiful
Thanks for sharing sir
But energy is lost in sound !!
AK yeah that’s ideal... it would be perfectly elastic if that lost in energy didn’t happen
He has just said elastic
If you wanna be that pedantic, way more energy is lost due to air resistance.
It's just an example as elastic collisions only happen b/w atoms.

I think I deserve the credits for this class, along with being marked down for attendance even though I already graduated.
I wanted to see if you swing them both in one direction but the side one much further
What will happen if object is movie east to west and collide with object whose moving in North to South direction
Perfectly elastic collision
Wow Sir, it's Awesome 😍😍😍😍
Now what would happen if one was rotating clockwise and the other counter clockwise?
I would have to watch out!
thank you sir, great video indeed!
Nice demo sir, plz make such more video es ....it is very helpful for the students 🙏
That's amazing!
I enjoy this video
Very interesting

Here, saying that it is an elastic collision is a simplification (idealization). There is transformation of energy in sound propagating through air.
In inelastic collisions, a part of mechanical energy is transformed into other forms of energy. I guess you misinterpreted the law...
Dear Professor,
But what about the velocity of sound then???
Even though there is elastic collision the velocity of sound remains constant how this is possible if it's not possible in case of two colliding elastic ball
Who is in the video? Is he Prof. Lewin Wilter?
Thank you for proff and imagination
Is perfectly inelastic possible with this?
Nope
Perfectly inelastic is when they both become one...... Not possible here tho
will they continue to go infinte times or would they stop ?
They will stop colliding as the kinetic energy is converted to thermal energy in the bowling balls and air.
Very good, thanks :)
Very informative
Velocity exchange both masses are identical
i waiting when you will demonstrate with a mass twice as heavy as other and what will happen when they will collide .

Can't we generate electricity with this type of project in huge scale🤔
Energy from falling mass is essentially hydroelectric power. These are cool: www.solarshop.online/en/gravity-light.html
Thank you so much sir❤️
which collision between earth and sun with proof
Why we read elastic collision in one dimension when we know that such type of collision do not exist in physical world??
Because we deconstruct a collision in each dimension calculate it then reconstruct it
Thankyou sir. 😇
