Season 5 Episode 16 "The Softer Side"
The team encounters a teenage boy (Dominic Scott Kay) who collapsed from severe pelvic pain after playing basketball. The boy was born with a condition called genetic mosaicism (46, XX/XY), or both male and female DNA, and the boy's parents inform House and the team that the boy is unaware of his condition. They chose a gender for him when he was born and raised him accordingly. However, when his condition worsens and his life is threatened, the parents wonder whether they made the right decision. Meanwhile, Cuddy and Wilson suspect something is wrong with House when he starts acting way too nice.

What the mom is saying: He's not ready for this.
What the mom is really thinking: I'm not ready for this.
yeaah...
EXACTLY!
Yes. Very good.
You could also see it like this... the doctor robbed the family of the chance of sitting down with his son and properly talking to him about his condition when he’s a bit older and able to understand properly what is happening. The doctor disregarded the mother’s wishes which is a offense to her profession, it’s not right no matter what she might feel the parents know the child better than her and have their reasons
@@gabrielgzz7585 I never said that the doctor was in the right for telling them, though. The problem is that the kid could tell that something was going on, and the parents weren't doing anything to help that process because they themselves were too scared/ashamed. A kid needs their parents most when something goes wrong, but these parents weren't stepping up and being there for their kid. The mom should be angry for the doctor saying something, yes, but she could also be freaking out because now she actually has to do something about her kid rather than pretending that everything is okay. It's a complex issue, sure, but actually acknowledging the problem is the first step in getting anything resolved. The parents weren't even doing that.
Keep in mind that the parents' attitude about their kid almost killed him.
I love how House is always the one to walk in the room, tell everyone they’re dumb. Explains what the problem and it’s okay and walks out again

Overprotecting your kids WILL backfire. Protect them from the things that are worth protecting them from. Otherwise, you might as well have them live in a bubble.
Nick Warren I can vouch for this
My cousins, a few friends, and me to an extent we’re all very shielded and now we either smoke, are gay or bi(not saying it’s wrong just that our parents tried to prevent it or disagree with it), have depression, have self harmed, and do shit we shouldn’t (i mean none of us are that bad but it is usually to rebel)
What I’m saying is being over protective pushes kids away
Watch bubble boy with Jake Gyllenhaal. A great movie with a pretty important lesson.
@@FRENCHIZE420 yeah, that movie pretty much proves my point.
Sheltered, over protected kids end up being the best liars. I can confirm that.

Yep. One of Cuddys best moments. Had 13s back and the kids.

Whether the kid deserves to know or not it was not her place or her business, she was out of order
Ebunoluwa13 then you could make the argument that the parents were never in the right to NOT tell him since it wasn’t their place to decide since it was his body. The kid never even got the chance to choose to wanna know or regret knowing because it was held from him.

At least here House actually calls them out on the cliche and rubs their face into it
How was 13 supposed to know that it was a homework assignment and not a suicide note? She doesn`t even know Jackson personally, they were harsh on her for no reason.
True, true. And if, by chance, it were not a homework assignment and they ignored it? They'd be in trouble.
How were the parents ignorant of their own child homework? My own parents used to ask me and my brother about the teachers and the classes, just to know if everything was ok. How on Earth didn´t they had a conversation about suicide notes homework?

every woman is at least a little bit crazy when it concerns her children. The problem here is that the father should've been objective, reassuring and should've take the lead. This guy is like a domesticated cat, pretty spineless. He listened to his wife every step of the way, should have taken the initiative instead.
The mother blaming 13 as if it's not even the mothers fault for lying in the first place? I might be weird, but I'd just take the blame for what I did.

I love that dialogue too. It shows how House thinks and what people think about his actions. On the surface he seems cruel, cold, objective, and rude, which he is, but the reason he does the things he does and says the things he says is because be cares about the people around and wants them to understand things as well as he does.

After working in healthcare for some time, I've come to see Cuddy in a whole new light. Lisa Edelstein NAILED it. Being the boss in this sort of environment means being able to roll with the madness the pops up on a daily or even hourly basis without losing track of everything else going on. You cannot babysit one employee all day every day. Cuddy is surprisingly realistic.
I loved that one episode from Cuddy's POV.

@@parahumanoid No it's not. A 'freak of nature' is simply something that is very, very unlikely to happen (unnatural). He isn't saying the child's a freak, he's being blunt by calling the parents out on treating their child like a freak. Try to understand before you comment calling him rude and an asshole.
@@Venetii_, do you seriously believe that attaching "of nature" to a loaded term applied to a kid in his presence makes it all OK? I don't.

@@Venetii_, in that case, a freak is just an abbreviation of the same notion. And historically, it is. Might just as well use that. I don't need growing up, I'm old enough to know what constitutes complete lack of care for the feelings of those around, when they are in a vulnerable state. Also, when I say he's an asshole, I am not being overly emotional. I am voicing my judgement on this behavior. I have the right to just by the virtue of being a free man.
the mom basically just doesnt want to tell the kid the truth because shes afraid. they should have told him as soon as he was old enough to understand the difference between boys and girls
Just like parents need to let their child grow up knowing they're adopted (if they are). Some things should never, ever be kept from a child, their health and paternity status.

This is one of the most interesting episode of House.
The kid has simple dehydration - if they brought him into the clinic on any other episode, House would've pegged that in under half a minute, got the kid of fluids and sent him on his way. But _this_ particular episode...It wasn't just the parents' paranoia - House has dealt with difficult parents before, and he's managed to shut them down in the past.
No...This episode is interesting because House lost his _edge._
He's on Methadone - Heroin without the high as he puts it. It completely eliminates the pain in his leg. Without that pain, House doesn't need to focus on the puzzle to ignore it - without the focus, House doesn't see things. And because he's not fighting back his temper due to the pain, he's acting nicer...
It was because House was _nice_ to these people that nearly got the kid killed...
The end of the episode has House come to this realization and he goes off the Methadone. It's sad because it's one of the many times that seems to confirm that House can either be a brilliant Doctor or he can _not be in pain_ - ...but he can't have _both._
It honestly kind of makes the season where he goes to rehab and gets clean to be rather frustrating.
Why is that frustrating?
@@anthonyortiz350 Read the last paragraph again slowly.
Thing is his leg wasn't always like that right? And he was still brilliant before so why would he be worse now? Cause either way, he figured it out
The season where he goes to rehab showed that he can detox... But the pain is always there. He seeks high by continuing to solve his puzzles. However, he is used to using drugs as a way to cope, hence he returned to it when is overwhelmed with emotions (failed to save the women under the building) and when he is back to his miserable self (post breakup)
That is a n interesting concept. Interesting to see how it applies in other matters too.
How I imagine the end scene going
Dad: Did you hear that, you're going to be fine
Son: No thanks to you dipshits.
Mother: Rushing out, crying and complaining again

yeah she did good. we mostly see her being the person who has to say no to house which is frustrating as viewers as we want house to always get his way. and because he is usually right (eventually) it can make her look weak/ineffective - even though she is just following protocol which she has to do. but the reality is she's quick, capable, fair and good at dealing with the mess that house's and his team make. its moments like this where we see that properly
Show: *do you feel like a girl?*
Me: u h o h . . .
Show: (*handles it well*)
Me: oh.
I never understood that question. How are you supposed to feel like if you're a girl or a boy? Is it like feeling mad or happy? So confusing.
A. J. It’s hard to explain. You just... kind of know. People are who they are; just like some people prefer blue over red, or classical music over rock, it’s just how they are. Some people need to experiment before they can feel sure-sometimes they just... don’t find one they fit completely or, they don’t even fit any. The latter cases are genderfluidity and agenderism respectively.
@@a.j.2362 I'm a trans guy, I'd like to explain it as best as I can. I grew up female and I was expected to do stereotypically "feminine" things, like being graceful, playing with other girls, being cute, playing with "girl's toys" (like dolls), like boys, wear makeup, wear women's clothes, etc. But, even though I tried to fit into that role as hard as I could, it never "felt right". I had always felt like I wasn't supposed to be doing all these things. It's like being somewhere where you feel you don't belong. Instead, when I did stereotypical "boyish" things, I felt a lot better. This is what many people call "dysphoria". When people say they "feel like a boy", they usually mean that they feel more comfortable, confident and content with behaving as a boy and being accepted by society as one. I could go on talking about this for ages but I don't want this comment to be a million words long, so I wrote some examples. I hope I helped, have a nice day! :)
@@TheYoutubaki Now I'm even more confused. If you were allowed to do all that as a girl than you wouldn't feel like a boy? I mean I've never acted girly or wore makeup or dresses or played with girl toys growing up and it was whatever to everyone else. So maybe it's your parents being too strict about those things? What do you think?
@@a.j.2362 It's not about what others make you do, it's about how you feel when you act as a girl. That's what we call "gender identity". Someone who identifies as a girl usually has no problems fitting into that role. But someone who identifies as a boy feels dysphoric when trying to fit into the social role of a girl.
How is it 13's fault that they hid this important medical issue from their child? The child was already expressing some doubts and he felt there was something wrong. What? How will they keep convincing their kid to take some 'vitamins' for the rest of their life? What if the kid did feel like a 'girl'? But he's a 'boy' so now he's just confused and feel like a freak.
Even the dad wanted to come clean. Mom wasn't really worried about the kid --- she said it herself, "what you did to me".
Getting into a fight with your son's doctor doesn't really seem like a smart thing to do, especially when said doctor is your best chance at saving your son.

I love the shot as he walks out. Perfect words at the perfect time.
House seems like he needs a good nap, a hug, and then a day off
Conditions your kid is born with and adoption are 2 things parents should never deliberately hide from their children. When these things are discussed from a young age in a matter of fact way, "this is just how things are and there's nothing wrong with that, it's what is", they have a foundation of understanding before they're worried about what other people will think about it.
House creates chaos in the knowledge it’ll bring order. He’s playing chess with people and he’s ten moves ahead.
His mom emphasising the “nearly” like it makes it any better. It doesnt.
I'm not a doctor, but honestly, I get that House trains them to break the law. However, 13 technically shouldn't LIE to a patient even under duress. So, she did avoid the gray area by not directly answering and redirecting the responsibility where it should be: the parents.
Even Cuddy realizes 13 played it super professional in the shitty situation she got put under.
Man cuddy is such a badass. "No you won't. In about 15 minutes your the only person that kid is going to trust. If he needs a hand to hold, make sure yours is available."

To be honest it seemed like the Mom wanted the son to indentify as a boy than a girl. All the activities that the boy was forced to do were things that he did not want to do.

Once someone kills themselves they are not experiencing anything anymore, so really what people are saying is “you should continue to suffer and live a life you don’t want to live so I don’t have to be sad.”
So happy to see someone who thinks like me. Let living organisms choose if they want to stay alive. Otherwise it sounds like life is a punishment. I'm happy for everyone who prefers to stay alive, but I'm not one of them. I understand every person who chose death. My life is lonely and painful all the time. No reason for me to live. I'd love to get peacefully euthanised.
SkoczMiNaPukiel I’m sorry to hear your life doesn’t feel worth living. Just remember that can change, but don’t ever let anybody make you feel bad that it hasn’t. I agree that life can feel like a prison or a punishment when people think they should make you feel like it’s always wrong to end your life. For some reason that is the way people respond instead of trying to help you change your situation to one that is bearable. If you ever need someone to talk to about it let me know, I try not to judge anybody.
Exactly
Lol .. that comment was made to a potentially suicidal teenager .. not really the place for the discussion people are having above
SdSl I was bring up a general point, but I don’t see how someone being a teenager changes anything.
