    Oh boy... I remember the times... putting the speed to slow when being attacked by sonic tanks (for some buggy reason their range was limited at low game speeds prior to 1.07). Saving the game when playing H9 and you are just about to fire your DH missile, in order to load it again if your DH missile doesn't hit the target you want it to hit. The moment you are playing the last few levels of Atreides and pumping up with Hi-Tech facilities, building a lot of Ornithopters, put them on hold when they just about to finish building and quickly finish building them all together when the last one is about to finish building and watch the swarm wreak havoc. Or the more lame moments of trying to defend your base with sonic tanks, putting them at the front. Only to find out the enemy drops units in the back at some random moment and your sonic tanks blasting through your own buildings like it was hot butter. Yes... I remember the times xD. Good speedrun though!

    Tried this one out a few months ago and boy, if it's primitive. :) I wonder why the successor Dune 2000 is relatively unknown since it kicked so much ass back in the day I had to play it through twice. Emperor - Battle for Dune also rocks (bought it new immediately when it came out and still got it).

      I didn't get into D2000 myself back in the day. I think Starcraft was already out when I first played it. Something about the C&C style miniature characters was perhaps off-putting for me, but been considering many times to give it another try. Frank Klepacki did excellent renditions for the soundtrack and the FMV sequences are very fun to watch also. Emperor still haven't tried yet.

    • @bormisha
      @bormisha 6 лет назад +2

      I also didn't get into D2000. Didn't like it visually from the start, and then again, it's the same setup. Who would swap the original D2 for an ugly remake? Even modern RTS games didn't go that far ahead of D2. Also the soundtrack is mostly variations of the D2 themes, with sampled "cheap" sound. Didn't like it either, although I'm a big fan of Frank Klepacki, especially his Red Alert series soundtrack.

    I'd suggest spending as much money as you can building more placaces. You quickly get money flooding over 4K and beeing wasted anyway.
    Btw, replacing the radar and all those factories with some more could be an idea too. Would a full starport dependency be that bad ?
    Still a lot of room for improvement, for sure, but nice job already !

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, starting to float on resources after midpoint and best place to invest those resources would be palaces. At this point unit micro easily becomes the main focus so it's easy to forget about other things. Missiles are not a very reliable source of damage, considering accuracy and reload time, best used for taking out critical structures such as CY and heavy factories after CYs are destroyed.
      Not sure what you mean by "replacing the radar and all those factories..."? Built a heavy factory for backup units at the front lines, but it was too late to make any impact and would've been better to skip it entirely. That didn't end up wasting lots of time though. Need the radar to get missile turrets. Those seem to be essential for this mission as they draw Ordos and Emperor units while vehicles go to engage Atreides.But I agree, this should be improvable still. Main point of improvement IMO would be to focus even more on unit placements.

    • @balmipour
      @balmipour 6 лет назад

      I forgot to mention the use of shortcuts to build units & structures. "Tab" can also very useleful to quicly give order to units. Forgot the radar was necessary for turrets. Guess you could still have skipped the facts & "X", but this might be situational to this game. About palaces, I know they kinda suck (at least for a speedrun), but they remain fun. Since you don't seem to look for the most optimal run, a missile rain, or just some random tries to shoot the yards could be cool. Btw, the cooldown is just too big to hope for any reload :)

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  6 лет назад +2

      F3 opens the build menu, but you still have to go there to select the building you want to construct. Tab could be useful in some situations, but the problem is that it doesn't help focusing specific units. You can give orders to units, but the same units are selected over and over again and you need to cycle through many units to get the one you want to move. Most of the time it's faster to just use mouse to select. Second MCV, IX and HF was a waste in this one. Starport and repair facility should be sufficient.
      I built lots of palaces in an old run, but that ended up over 4min slower, not because of the palaces though. I'd remember this run was lucky, getting hits on Emperor CY and Atreides HF. Not sure how to improve the strategy much. Riskier strats don't seem to be very reliable. I didn't grind this heavily. It gets rather taxing and boring on repeated attempts, because half the time is spent on waiting for the economy to catch up and only after that trying to focus on unit moves. Would be interesting to see more people running this game. Only one guy recently did some runs and figured out interesting strats for many missions, but used the same strats as myself for this one.

    • @bormisha
      @bormisha 6 лет назад

      With HF, your unit cap is much lower than it is with the starport. So either you have a small attack squadron of Devastators or Dev/Launcher, or a larger attack squad of Siege&Launchers. I guess the IX/HF way makes more sense for the Atreides, where the Sonic tanks are both long range and self-defense capable.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  4 года назад

      You'll need to increase cycles in DOSBox. Use CTRL+F!2 to do so. Beyond certain point, only scroll speed is affected, but game speed is not. Also make sure you have fastest game speed enabled in options.

      @@True38 Depends on game. For D2 something like 20k-30k should be decent, but you can make it higher. It just makes map scrolling more difficult to handle. Try different settings, what works best for you. • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  5 лет назад

      You probably have DOSBox running on 3000 cycles. Type cycles=14000 in DOSBox prompt or change it in dosbox.conf. Speed of the game is capped so increasing cycles after a certain point will only affect map scroll speed. You can also use CTRL+F11 and F12 to decrease and increase cycles in game. You can see your current cycle settings in windowed mode. Harvesters stop harvesting when a sector is cleared of spice. Try sending harvesters to a another sector where there's more spice, instead of small patches. You'll just have to figure out the bugs and limitations of the engine and handle more micro, but the game is still rather playable. Obviously a bit tedious compared to modern RTS games.

    • @thfFromRussia
      @thfFromRussia 5 лет назад

      @@einokeino303 thank you for your answer. I've already set cycles to 30k :) It works well. But those harvesters are killing me... I build the factory and they often don't even move to the nearest field and i have to send them manually every time. I just played Sega version and there's no any problem with this, so you can understand it seems to me so important. It's like send every SCV in Starcraft to the minerals manually - just nonsense... Probably i'll get used to it after time.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  5 лет назад +1

      @@thfFromRussia You need to scout the spice fields before constructing Refineries. Harvesters will idle if there's no spice visible on the map when they are first delivered. If you get harvesters from Starport or Heavy Factory you have to assign harvesting manually right from the start. It's also possible there's some differences with different patch versions of this game, 1.07 is the last official one. There are also free remakes (OpenDUNE, Dune Legacy etc.) that change, add and fix stuff if you care to try those.
