Dune II - Harkonnen mission 9 speedrun

  • Over 2min improvement over my old time with a new strategy. Rushing immediately to capture an Atreides rocket turret and taking them out to make room for a secondary base. This strategy makes the mission more interesting to play, because there's no waiting time for credits at the beginning and it's not too hard to execute either.
    Strategy could be polished further for sure. Should get the repair facility surrounded completely for proper Carry-All repairs. One important aspect to consider is starport unit purchases, what to buy and when. Harkonnen starts with only 1000 credits and money is very limited all the time. One Carry-All decided to blow up inside the repair facility taking it out simultaneously. This run would've definitely been faster if that didn't happen.

    stealing an R-turret? I didn't even know you could steal those! that's some ballsy tactics right there. nice!

      Its hard. The turret and building must be at their lowest hitpoint.. that first stealing turret was a little bit pro. Like how he played, a game winning and losing is based on if he capture that turret or not!

    That's got to be the fewest number of structures built on a level 9 map that was successfully won. Another great run in general - you're becoming pretty superb at managing and maintaining those small tank groups and keeping them alive.
    Carryalls don't really have an in air/on the ground status. They do take damage like any other unit, but generally move fast enough that they never actually get hit. I've seen players experiment with an enemy carryall that glitches and gets stuck circling the edge of the map - if you drive a tank there and force-fire it on a square where the carryall flies over, it's eventually shot down. If a carryall is about to pick up a unit that then dies, the carryall also blows.
    They also attract rocket turret fire like crazy. They always miss, but the rockets can (slightly) follow them in the air, and will damage anything they land on. I'm pretty sure that's what happened to your repair facility - enemy RTs fired at your carryalls and the rockets hit the repair instead. That usually only happens on cramped maps where your carryalls' holding pattern takes them too close to the enemy base (from memory the Harkonnen mission 8 where you start on the left and the enemy bases are northeast and southeast is bad for this). The more nearby RTs you take out at the start of the invasion, the longer your carryalls and buildings will last.
    Another fun RT consideration - enemy RTs are not restricted by fog of war (you usually discover them when they fire on your units) but your RTs will not see or fire on any enemy units covered by the fog. So it's always best to discover land around your RTs that covers their field of fire, otherwise they won't see enemy units coming until they fire and reveal themselves.
    Units told to fire on an empty square will do so unless it's adjacent to them, in which case they'll sit there doing nothing in attack mode, or if the empty square is adjacent to any unit (including yours), in which case the game assumes you mis-clicked and will target that unit instead. To get a tank to fire on a wall that's next to it, you need to force-fire at a square on the other side of the wall that's not adjacent to any other units. Otherwise you'll see the unpredictable behaviour in this run.
    Are you the Eino who did the Space Hulk Deathwing longplay? If you're still into SH I'd love to see the regular campaign played though sometime - I could never complete it and nobody appears to have run it online.

      Wow, that's a a lot of great info, thanks! :) I could probably do with less RTs, but not sure if it's worth it to skip building those. It's necessary to get Radar and Light Factory to get the Repair Facility. I've still considered about getting a Heavy Factory, but probably not worth it. Devastators could be very useful, but pretty expensive and also require Ix. I'm usually too lazy with scouting, should try to practice doing that more. I've noticed about the RT behavior and fog of war. It's very important to keep that in mind during when scouting. I haven't spent much thought about targeting behavior with tanks previously, but this mission woke me up on that, when tanks just targeted each other on cramped spots where I was trying to clear some walls. I definitely also need to pay more attention to CarryAlls in the future and plan out better, what structures and in what order to take those out.
      Yes, I did the Deathwing campaign quite a while a go uploaded on WoL channel (then Cubex55). You mean the single missions? I checked around YT and apparently someone has recorded those more recently on separate videos ruclips.net/video/Kshr8REidlI/видео.html

      You do seem to end up with a quad hanging around the front lines - it might be worth tacking one or two on top of your first few starport orders (or trikes - even cheaper and faster and harder for enemy RTs to damage as long as you're watching them, and even Harkonnen can order them from the starport) to get some midgame base scouting happening. You could especially do this selectively to 'wake up' enemy guard units and draw them to your RTs once you're confident they can handle the firepower.
      Don't forget RTs (yours and theirs) still aim and fire at the same rate whether you're looking at them or not, when tanks and infantry slow down movement and rate of fire when they're not currently on screen (and more than one square outside of it) - if you're quick with your radar map a couple of RTs can mow down multiple enemy tanks before they even get within firing range, and they'll stay focused on the quad/trike that woke them up and completely ignore the RTs. I really think there's at least a few minutes to come off your times if you can micromanage them like this - it relies on a pretty stupid set of glitches, but this game is so broken there's no real way to play 'fairly' against the AI as-is.
      Devastators are definitely more powerful, but considering they're 800 credits each, plus the Ix and the field HVF and the repairs it'll constantly need (and the risk you run with it being a target for death's hand missiles), slower to build, slower in general (so also easier to damage, even if they have more armour), slower to return to the battlefield after repair... you're right, you're better off with a starport (cheaper and way more heavily armoured than the HVF) and mail-ordering siege tanks. Starport prices go down to a minimum 50% of the manufacturing price of a unit, but even at a 25% sale price, two separate sieges for 900 are way more tactically powerful than a single devastator ever could be. Their self destruct nature is terrifying and would be great against human players, but the AI doesn't give too hoots about that.
      Hopefully this is all helping/interesting you - I played this game incessantly when I was much younger and love watching your runs of it.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, I appreciate all the feedback a lot of course, especially the in depth comments you've provided :) Scouting is definitely one of my weaker points. I like the range on Devastators compared to sieges and accuracy over rocket tanks. I'd prefer to use Devastators for more consistent results, but unfortunately it would likely get too expensive.
      Speedrunning is all about exploiting the flaws in a game and figuring out how to best manage your resources. I think that's what appeals to me. Although I don't enjoy some glitched speedruns, when the game gets too broken so it's not as challenging to play it anymore. In Dune II the exploits are often harder to execute properly, compared to playing as intended so it remains interesting to me to figure out more efficient strategies to try. I'm little bit too lazy on grinding, trying few different strategies and when I think I've found a good one, I grind for a while. If I'd stick with one strategy and grind for longer, I could get better results. When playing only few times with one strategy, I'm not familiar enough about the results to anticipate everything perfectly. My focus is often in the wrong place at the wrong time.
      Would be nice to have more people running D2. Few people have picked this up recently, but they usually play for a while and move on. It's not as interesting to keep grinding this by myself, but when I get excellent feedback it makes it more interesting for me to keep at it. I've been looking for new games to run though, but not sure what people would be interested in watching and where I could best contribute. Games like Starcraft are already optimized to a point there's not much room for improvement. Dune II has not seen much focus so there's quite a bit to do here still.

      By chance are you from St. Louis area?
      We got the game from a friend, and they had some saved files. There was a Harkonnen level 9 that was stalemated with a ton of blasted out buildings.
      I managed to beat the level, if I recall I noticed if I lost the harvester I’d get 7 spice or so when a new one would come so I’d destroy the harvester that would get shipped in.
      So I slowly got enough spice for repairs at a repair facility. And I don’t think there were any production buildings left, just turrets. I had to eke across the map and take out enemy defenses with the launcher that I had.
      Anyways was fun to have that difficult setup and learn from the game. I was curious if maybe you were the one with the stalemated game.

    Wow, what a brilliant idea is to capture that R-turret! Not only it relieves you of the problem of dealing with the enemy rebuilding R-turrets, but also it allows you to base walk them and provides defense! And you found a good use for that initial squad of Troopers.
    I think the carryall falls because it has to fly over the enemy R-turrets. Those shoot at aerial targets with a much longer range than they do at ground targets. You left some Atreides R-turrets over, presumably to save time, but they have destroyed your Carryalls all the time. So maybe you should clear them out.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  5 лет назад +4

      Thanks :) Harkonnen is the only faction starting with an infantry unit so this strategy is only available for Harkonnen. I guess the trooper is there for balancing handicap, because Harkonnen is considered most powerful. It appears though, that Ordos is the most powerful faction for the last mission with 2000 credits and Deviators. I have dismissed those previously, but apparently it's possible to use them for a massive advantage at the beginning of the mission. I've previously assumed CarryAlls could only be taken out when a tank blows up, while being picked up. In this case however, the Devastator had enough health to survive the incoming rocket. I guess it's possible that the CarryAll is most vulnerable while on the ground. I never noticed CarryAlls to get destroyed while in the air, but I guess it's also possible. You are right though, I should have taken out the rocket turrets from the flight path. Interesting point about the turret range as well! Thanks a lot for the observations, gives me something to think about again :)

    Man! I tried this tactics, but it took me about 2 hours to complete this mission. After I destroyed heavy factory the computer cheated: he built heavy factory again ON my units when I tried to destroy light factory and air factory, just deleted them with his structure!!! This is madness! And I was really stuck on the moment when you built a starport: Ordos started to swarm me and sardukars too! Damn! I was made to built a lot of turrets to defend!!!

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  2 года назад +2

      Yes, the computer can build over units. It's important to destroy construction yard quickly to avoid rebuilding. Computer economy will improve the longer it takes to assault them. It's advisable to avoid unnecessary scouting at the beginning to keep Ordos units dormant for longer.

    Just did a 23 minute run on this level using your technique, with a few tweaks.
    Only built 2 additional turrets - one in the centre of original base (just 3 refineries and the construction centre tightly packed), one at leftmost bit of 'new' base.
    Much heavier use of rocket tanks to take out buildings, with the siege/dev tanks only used as blockers/tank killers. 7 rocket tanks in use by the time I assaulted the emperors palace.
    Took out all Atr turrets early on (after repair centre built) so tanks coming from the starport can get into action quickly without taking damage.
    No video unfortunately, playing open dune on android.

      It did cross my mind a while back. However, I should have at least decent times on one campaign missions before doing that. I don't currently hold all the records even on Harkonnen missions. Few of the missions at least are very optimized already and I'm not particularly interested in grinding to see if I can lower those times by a second or two. Also, some missions could still do more optimization and I've not been playing this game for a while now. Maybe at some point I'll go for a new record on one of the missions. норм, но можно было ещё обстроить ремонтную мастерскую и тогда самолет забирал и возвращал бы сломанную технику обратно на поле боя. меньше потерь было бы. Ну и если бы свой четырех-колесник не убил свою же ракетницу в 19:20, то тоже было бы меньше потерь )))) Правда ещё повезло, что саботажники не взорвали строительную площадку на базе, вместе с харвестерами =) и что ядерная ракета на неё не приземлилась )))
