Nice video, Roy. I bought a handful of triplets about 8 years ago -- just wanted to see what they were all about. The things that fool buyers are mostly doublets .. particularly and perhaps exclusively the ones that are hand made (rather than cut with a microtome.) With a thick enough layer of opal, one can put a slight dome on it, which is what really fools people into believing that it's black opal. I have never seen a triplet that made me think it was anything but a composite gem. Triplets are GREAT for people who cannot afford real opal cabochons, though. I myself bought a doublet for about $2500 USD (in Tucson). I bought it from Robert Shapiro, who is famous for his awards at cutting boulder opal, but is also know for producing the most sought-after doublets - some of them huge (up to 10 cm long and 2-3 cm wide.
I get emails every week or two about someone wanting me to confirm if a stone is a triplet. It is mostly the classic bezel set low ct gold set stones but to me it is still very easy to tell it is composite. Man a 10cm doublet is unreal!
Nicest looking triplets I’ve seen. Good to know there is honest people out there that don’t try to pass triplet opals off as solids. Those are beautiful. I’ll have to check him out.
Hey Roy ,yea I actually saw Geoff making stuff on RUclips and was amazed at how much went into making them. He definitely knows his stuff. I've also been looking at getting into silver smithing and I've been watching a channel called Chad's silversmithing. Very good teacher and I've got pretty much all the basic stuff I need to give it a go . Good luck setting your earrings
Just got my first tiny tiny tiny piece of black opal. Coworker randomly had it and gave it to me. It’s potch but saw the tiniest little fleck of blue flash. Hopefully I can afford a nicer bigger after the dang hospital is paid off 😬🤘🏻. Love the videos man!
I feel bad buying doublets and I dont even think I have a triplet. But I guess they have thier uses. Thanks for sharing his youtube channel I will have a look. interesting video 2x👍
They are pretty. So long as people are informed, I have no problem with them. Good practice stuff, but if harder to damage, just remember to gear back when you get back to softer material! LOL 😊
been watching him do his thing has been a wild ride xD watching him cut opals soo thin kinda made me cringe but he does it so well the end result is worth it
Those are beautiful, they would look nice in a display cabinet. But yet, if promoted and sold as they are, then fine, but not for me unless they were just pretty to look at ….
Well I'm hoping to make my own earrings out of these ones and sell them off to recoup the costs. The true value for me is learning and practicing the silversmithing.

Bless Geoff for rescuing things that may otherwise be lost.
Keeping the skills alive.
They definitely are worth buying..

Have finally up loaded a video. More to come.
Cheers Famo59 👍⛏️
Oh cool. Will be cool to see what you got up to on the last hunt!

He is a rare honest triplet pro. He would hate all the scammers more than anyone else giving triplets a bad reputation.

Its a pretty interesting process. I'll have to check out Chad's silversmithing. Need all the info i can get!
@@RoysRocks definitely worth a look.
Brilliant! Thanks Roy!
No worries. Good to know a decent supplier of all opal including triplets.
Geoff is absolutely amazing on how he makes those. His process is awesome.
He is a gem himself. Rare to find someone so committed to something and doing it right.
Those look amazing.
they certainly are top notch triplets. Not a flaw in any of them.
Beautiful
They are actually really cool to look at. Now I just need to get the silver right...

Cool! no matter how small it is nice to have a little black opal with a hint of colour! Have to start somewhere.
That's really cool.
The rare cool triplet making master. He will be the only one I ever buy triplets from again.
Absolutely love the color though
He does pick good quality material. Maybe sometimes too good... But works out well.
I feel bad buying doublets and I dont even think I have a triplet. But I guess they have thier uses. Thanks for sharing his youtube channel I will have a look. interesting video 2x👍
I very rarely buy either myself (though I have made doublets). Triplets are just me having zero confidence pushing bezels.

Yeah I'll be treating these like they are solids and being as careful as possible rather than pushing all out because they are strong.

It is a super fascinating process. I'd never do it myself but I like watching him do it.
Thanks for sharing. Its an art. I heard there are not many wire saws left in Australia.
Nah not many at all. I only know of 3 of the old school machines left in action still in use.
@@RoysRocks I wonder if the newest ones are better in blade width and if the construction has been automated or not.
Wow these are insane where can you buy them I’d love to buy a free form triplet 😊
Links in the description. Etsy and facebook you can reach Geoff. Man is a legend, tell him I said hi.
Does he use potch behind it? What's his youtube thanks heaps bro love ur vids
Nah the backing is some sort of glass like the welding glass and the top quarts.
Hi Roy, trying to figure out if he uses quartz for the tops of the triplets? Could not see it mentioned anywhere on this facebook or etsy shop?
I just searched for quartz on his facebook page and found out they are "molded quartz caps".

The problem with triplets (and especially these days with the online market) is that in the wrong hands, it is just a scam bait.
True! Its always the bloody humans that ruin everything. A few bad eggs will always try to scam with triplets.
