He tells us why he selected each featured running shoe, what are their main strengths, and which ones score for being lightest, most durable for running high mileage, and which is the most comfortable everyday trainer. Yes, the most trusted models from Hoka, Brooks, Asics, Nike and New Balance shoes made the cut, but the best running shoe of 2025 (so far!) might surprise you!

thanks for your top five! With regards to the invincible 3, I was put off by the many reviews that said the shoes had heel slip issues and were heavy. You didn't experience those issues?
I didn’t, but I also think people with particular skinny ankles/feet should look elsewhere because the shoe trends a bit wide in that area.
As for the weight, I find that the Zoom X foam’s bounce counterbalances it. They’re worth a try: ideally, an in-store test.
Heel slip is maddening and the arch feels like it's trying to murder my foot.
I've been running for 15 years. I've had probably 5-10 shoes a year in every brand and it's the only shoe I've absolutely hated with a passion I don't get why people buy it
Thank you for the review Alex...
I use Cliftons, but recently tried (in the store) and was impressed with the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v13. Just wondering why you picked the 880 over the 1080v13, thanks
Alex here👋
I went with the 880 over the 1080 because they offered a bit more connection to the ground. The 1080’s cushioning took a while to get used to. That said, the 1080 is also in my rotation - very comfortable. And I can see how you took to them if you’re already a fan of HOKA
Nike Invincible 1 is still my go to easy run shoe, wonderful for half marathon distance on gravel/ paths. Only around 150-200 miles on them, currently trialling the NB rebels v4 which are very similiar but i reluctantly had to return as the UK 9 were too small.
I’m a fan of trying out shoes in store because of that: there seem to be tiny size fluctuations between brands.
@@marathonhandbook in future im going off EU/ US sizes and not UK
Try Pegasus 41, Asics novablast 4
Thanks for the review, I always think I want to try a new running shoe so I watch these reviews but then I just can't part with my Hoka Mach 5's. About ready to get the Mach 6.. just waiting till I actually need a pair not just want a pair 😆 I'm sad the Mach didn't make your list. Curious if you've tried it. Cheers!
Alex again - I did try the Mach 6! The reason I didn’t add them is because they are light like a workout shoe, and in this review I stuck with daily, more durable trainers.
I don’t use the Mach 6 for easy runs because they make me go too quickly - but they’re nice for workouts. One of my favourite non-carbon plated workout shoes.
Dang, I never thought about trying the 880. I was just at NB store yesterday to try the 1080v13 on and while I like the it's very squishy, I almost felt like I was on high heels lol. It's not stable at all, or I should have tried wider foot version?! Btw, do you happen have adidas ultra boost 22? I bought a pair a few months ago because of all the hypes, but I find it's very stiff, or it takes time to break in? I have 1080v11 and Clifton 8 and they both are so soft on feet compared to UB22
The 880 might be a good choice for you, then; you will feel the ground a bit more. At least worth an in-store test. And no, I haven't tried the Ultra Boosts. It's on the bucket list!
Really great video I cannot do the Hokas I feel like Frankenstein. I know 5 to 6 years ago Brooks were all the rage but I never ended up with a pair instead I ended up with the 880s Fresh Foam X very soft extremely comfortable for walking. The Nikes I feel like Nike in general meh... but the shoe that is missing from this already excellent video is the On cloud Surfer. I would choose those first 880 second. Excellent video I am now proceeding to subscribe
Thanks for watching! Cloudsurfers aren’t a bad pick. Maybe my #7😉

What race day shoe would you recommend for someone who is going to run their first half marathon. Current daily rotation guide 17/ brooks adrenaline 23 and hoka Clifton 8/9s. I’m a heavier runner at. 280lbs and 6ft 4”. Looking forward to your input
Hey Dustin, we're working on a similar video for racing shoes, so more on that later. For now, are you looking to try carbon plated shoes for racing? Or are you sticking with traditional trainers like you listed? If it's the latter, the five in the video are good choices. If you're open to trying something that still feels supportive like a traditional trainer but with a bit more pop, the On Cloudmonster 2 might be a good pick for you. We did a review on it here: ruclips.net/video/4j8-wk7IcS4/видео.html
@@marathonhandbook definitely something lighter and a bit more pop. The cloud monster 2 unfortunately goes up to a 14 and I’m a 15. I’m leaning towards the endorphin speed 4 but I will keep an eye out for yalls video! Thank you
Hey! I just have a question about my personal pair of running shoes. Can you compare my shoes (the under armor charged assert 10) to any of these shoes? Most specifically the brooks glycerin because i think they will be the ones for me. Thanks!
Hey, Alex here - unfortunately, I’ve never tried the charge assert 10s. Frankly, I’ve never heard of them!
As someone who is completely new to running and is using it purely to get my cardio up, what’s the best way to go about getting the best shoe for me?
Hey, Alex here. I’d suggest you visit a running shop and have a knowledgeable worker fit you. A training shoe (and not a racing shoe with a carbon plate) is a good place to start. After that, you can test different heel to toe drops (the difference in off-ground height between the shoe’s heel and its toe) to find out what you like.
The shoes in this video are pretty safe picks, in my opinion. But nothing beats testing a few pairs yourself to see what works best for your unique feet and stride.
Pro tip: don’t sell yourself short even if you’re a beginner. Often, spending the extra $30 for a better pair of trainers is worth the potential injury prevention down the line.
@@marathonhandbook thanks for the info man!
I will definitely hit up a shop.
I was about 2 mins away from pressing order on a pair of Mach 6 they were just calling to me 🤣
My experience with Hoka is that they run really small in size
Can you share what the books are on the wall behind you
Left to right:
Once a Runner: John L Parker
What I talk about when I talk about running: Haruki Murakami
Endure: Alex Hutchinson
Overall good video. I like your picks but disagree on the Glycerines. My pair didn’t last nearly as long as my Gel Nimbus.
Tough to beat the Nimbus’ durability.
how do the 880v14s fit length and width wise?
Hey, Alex here 👋
To me they fit true to size. I’m a size 11 with a D width foot, and haven’t encountered any issues.
@@marathonhandbook thanks so much Alex!!
Nimbus 25 was an 8mm drop so if they have made it 12mm then shame on them but maybe check your stats as don’t believe they have 😊
I would not recommend the Hoka Clifton to anyone! I’ve had three pairs that have lasted me less than 5 months each, and have really did damage to my feet because of them. The heel is way too high and the heel cushion crumbles so quickly and you are stomping instead of running! It also makes you lose muscle on the front of your feet. Do not get these shoes!
Really like the Clifton 9, but went dead at around 180 miles (300k) for me. Hope Hoka comes up with a new foam to the next Clifton.
Agreed!
The Nike invincible run 3 is horrible - with these my feet go inwards. Never had this with any other shoe - not Asics, not Adidas, not Saucony, not Rebook or other Nikes.
Interesting. What’s your training shoe of choice?
@@marathonhandbook I love the Asics Novablast 3, but also run in different - older HOKA ONE ONE Bondi, Asics Metaspeed and Nike Peg 38, i.a.
Pretty safe list, won't go wrong with any of these but Nike are 1🤮
Yeah, the Nike pick was surprising even for us! But it's legitimately a fantastic shoe and shockingly durable. We'll see if it holds up as a top pick at our year-end roundup!
All 5 are not my top 5 😉
