  • What is Universal Grammar and what are the central linguistic arguments underlying this influential model of linguistic thought? Prof. Handke seeks to answer these questions using linguistic and non-linguistic examples, but he also discusses the main problems that the current version of UG has to face.

    If by 'paradigm shift' Prof Handke means the emergence of Cognitive Linguistics, then LOL. I used to be a student of Cognitive Linguistics and spent some time and effort studying Cognitive Grammar. As far as I can see, the empirical data that cognitive linguistics have covered and successfully dealt with are still not comparable to that by generative grammar, both in scope and in depth. And Cognitive Linguistics itself faces no less problems that generative grammar does, if one gives the former some serious thoughts. Anyway, I'm expecting Part Two of this video, and thank you Professor for bringing us such wonderful courses.

    If a proposed theory can not be tested and the test repeated, it fails at being a theory.

    Chomsky は英語しか知らないようだ。
    generative grammar は英語に基づいた理論。
    言語はもっと多様性がある。universal grammar はまだ遠いよ。

      It's said that Chomsky speaks English and Spanish, understands French and knows some Hebrew. But I agree; it is a nice idea though. Thanks for giving me a small challenge to practice my Japanese!

    the trend of thought that English Grammar and Syntax might be magically acquired without being directly taught to native speakers has given rise to a generation of ambiguous, tautological, and untranslatable gibberish. They are incapable of marking a relative clause or object from subject, and often mangle words. Some groups of speakers live in a bubble, many cannot process written instructions, worse, they cannot fathom spoken replies.

    • @moorek1967
      @moorek1967 7 лет назад

      +Eryr Moel That's what Christopher Ellis wrote, that the "trend of thought" is what some people are theorizing, can't be magically acquired and needs to be directly taught otherwise the output result is gibberish.
