you got hired as a seasonal then right? if you're mainly inside as a cashier assistant there's going to be eyes on you almost always so be very proactive if you want to stay past the seasonal period. as soon ass you finish putting in one customer's items in their cart you need to go to the conveyor and start helping people unload. They say they don't want any black to show.
Also, expect to run into a lot of shitty people as well as people that won't bother moving a single item onto the belt for you. It will be a lot better for your mental state than if you expect people to be decent and assume most will help at least somewhat.

You probably already know but the corporate culture of Costco is focused on the welfare of its employees. For years, the former CEO, Jim Sinegal placed a cap on his annual salary of $350,000. Compare this to other CEO's in similar fields who make 10-30x more at minimum. At various points in his career he has been shown to opt in favor of employees and not the company. In one instance there was a healthcare cut that resulted in a surplus savings. Instead of keeping the savings to pad the bottom line it was decided to have it distributed into the retirement plans of all participating employees. Top it off with one of the highest paying employer's for cashier positions and you can see what the company's values are. Example interview ruclips.net/video/yWRTIRitKX0/видео.html

A few things from a 10 year employee:
The "center court" thing isn't necessarily true. Corporate has a lot to say about the location of where items from the previous seasonal area (for example if we're switching from furniture typically sold January through March to Home and Garden typically sold from March through July) is. We have to put those items found in our seasonal areas that didn't sell SOMEWHERE and typically they'll be somewhere in Hardlines (the non-foods side of the warehouse). It varies from region to region and warehouse to warehouse.
Prices ending in .97 are not the only items marked down to make sure they make room for new items. At the warehouse managers discretion items can be marked down further beyond the initial 0.97 markdown. Typically they will end in .00 or .50.
The asterisk does not indicate that the item is at its "lowest price it will be," it only notes that the item is marked "for deletion" by buyers at corporate indicating to stock crews and members that the item may no longer be purchased for some time. Typically these items are items we were giving space to determine their sales and whether they're worth keeping stocked as opposed to a competitors similar product. If you see a Costco carrying multiple versions of the same items in different brands, that's very unusual. We typically just carry our Kirkland Signature (KS) brand and one brand name version of a product. If there are two brand names and KS, typically those two brands are duking it out for the coveted alternative to KS.
KS Vodka was once manufactured by Grey Goose. We bought the factory where KS Vodka was produced by Grey Goose and now produce it ourselves to the same specifications.
I also don't understand all this talk about the "sheer number of products" at Costco. A typical warehouse carries 4,000 SKUs. A typical grocery store carries around 40,000 SKUs. One of the reasons we're able to keep prices so low is because we spend less time stocking far fewer items, and therefore we can run skeleton crews to stock such a large building, keeping payroll low.

You forgot to mention the # symbol indicates an EPC (emergency price change for non employees) which could indicate an item needs to sell through quickly or it is a competitive pricing that was dropped after the store opened. If you see the # symbol maybe consider jumping on that deal. There's a lot of secrets most videos don't cover but us 31 year employees are more than glad to help our members save money by offering tips.

@@TetyV You're quite welcome. I have a family of 4 so I try to save myself money too. Another thing I do as a shopper is buy the limit on rebate items so I can save them because when the rebate expires you won't see another rebate for 3 or more months. TP, dish soap, shampoo, pet meds, razors, etc have a long shelf life so they don't go to waste and I don't have to pay full price when they aren't on rebate because I just use up my stockpiles.

A few things from an employee. The asterisk doesn’t mean it’s been marked down at its lowest price, just that it’s a pending or deleted item. We can still get a few shipments in before that item is gone. Also, the center area (centers) isn’t always things on sale. Part of the center area is Domestics, products that usually stay. And the other half of the center area is the seasonal area, so those products vary from Christmas trees and toys, to furniture. Products on sales are usually on the fence near the entrance door, and on end caps.

Some info that I’ve learned working on the drawings for the architecture firm that designs all the Costco’s:
KS toilet paper and paper towels are in the back because they want you to go the farthest into the store to get their most popular item.
The gas will always be at least a few cents (if not up to almost a dollar) off gas stations in the area because Costco does their research and guarantees they have the lowest price, and they can do that because they sell so many gallons so quick.
The $1.50 hotdog has been the same price since Costco was started in 1981 and will never change price because Costco knows this item alone can get tens of thousands of people in the store. And the crazy part is, they lose money on the hotdog but just recently started making their own food plants to save 10 cents on every dog, so they can keep that $1.50 price.
Last thing: there’s about 785 Costco’s in the world, exactly 100 in Canada at the moment and about 300 in the USA as well as 6 Costco’s underway in China that are projected to be in the top 10 most profitable warehouses in the world.

Most of the time it’s for the gasoline, hot dogs, frozen yogurt, tires, and a cow for Christmas. Their meat is among the best. Roast chicken delicious and competitively priced.
Hot dog hack: take it home, take it out of the bun, toast it, add condiments; split the hot dog in half lengthwise and put it in frying pan, turn both sides. 😋
From my observations at the food court (at least in my area) families with both parents working physically demanding jobs will make dinner of it.

One thing that is absolutely wrong with this video is the comment about "the huge number of items" - what sets Costco apart from WallyWorld or VoldeMart or your local grocery store is that Costco carries a LIMITED number of high quality items - say, 4 to 6000 - while a grocery store may have 50,000. BTW, you can buy $10,000 watches here too.

I am a very smart shopper, always observing what is going on in a store so I know the best time is to buy certain products and when it is the busiest. I find that 1100-1600 is the busiest, but after 1700 is great especially on the weekends. Any day just before closing is the fastest because there are few customers and the smallest lineups of the day. I seldom wait for more than two minutes at closing time at the checkouts, and as a bonus there are many employees who will gladly help you find what you need in order to speed you through the store. I can easily be in and out in less than twenty minutes.

As a 20 year Costco shopper I realized the stores are practically dead right around 5:00pm weekdays. It is counter-intuitive I admit but I have never been wrong about it. I think all the moms are at home with their kids or hauling them around to sports practice and such, or people are in the car leaving work. It must depend on the city and location, but in my case it is true for 4 of the Dallas, Texas stores. It doesn't take much imagination to see that the entire city seems to be on the road at that time.

I think it has to do with individual state regulations about club sales or how the agreements with suppliers are structured. The idea is to prevent direct competition with regular grocery stores. It's why you see ketchup or other condiments only sold in packages of two or more in the club. The buying clubs were supposed to be for small businesses so they have to sell products differently than regular retail stores do.

Yes, you can use a Costco gift card to buy stuff without a membership, but god help you when you do. The cashier has to call a supervisor, who then tries to tell you that you can't use the card without being a member. Then the supervisor calls a manager, and they go through the same routine, and the manager says yes, you can use the card, but they have to fool the register somehow. By this time you've wasted 10 minutes and the people in line behind you are getting grumpy.
All you really have to do is ask the person behind you in line if they'd mind letting you scan their membership card. There's no real risk to this so 90% of the time people will let you do it.

Ok, so now I know this is strategic tension! I have done this exact thing- buying gift cards from Mom's membership for the past year. All you have to do is tell the cashier, before she starts ringing up the items, that she needs a code 99. She will then yell for a manager and will input the code while he attempts to badger you. One was a jerk to the second power! I kid you not.....AND don't even think about returning an item with a cash card purchase as those women will convince you that you're going around the system thus, making you feel like a second rate citizen. Whatever tho!

Not many warehouses will let you do that. We are required to check people's pictures on their membership cards and if they don't match, we ID them, and they can't use the card

Have very often found better prices elsewhere. But when I want something that is a good value there, I borrow a friend's card and pay cash. Also, no one needs a card to use either the outside restaurant area or the pharmacy in some states. If you just happen then to cruise into the food sample area, well.....

OK, here's something most people don't know about Costco: their five business principles which make them, according to many business journals, the most ethical company in America. They are, in order of importance, 1)Obey the Lay; 2) Take Care of our Members; 3) Take Care of our Employees; 4) Respect our Vendors and lastly 5) Reward our Shareholders. Too many companies invert the first and last.

Because of these “tips” the gift cards are not what they once were, what I mean is A lot of stores are now cashing them out for you AFTER your purchase to prevent you from making another purchase if you’re not a member.
Also the ending in .97 thing...not Not NOT a national markdown. Stores 50 miles apart might have completely different markdowns.

Actually, Costco has become really stingy with the gift cards, at least in Toronto. They limit all potential customers to 2; when you use your first one, Customer Service makes you sign a form that they keep on record that says you're entitled for one more before you'll be offered to sign up for a membership. And using the gift card can be a hassle; you need to get what's basically a permission slip from Customer Service to use it and at checkout, the cashier needs the floor manager to come and unlock the register before you can pay. My mother used to send me to run errands there while she was at work since she gave her secondary membership to one of her siblings. Now I use the secondary membership from my boyfriend.

    • @howardchu6302
      @howardchu6302 5 лет назад +1

No, only a hassle with gift cards. I now have my own membership. Every time a new member joins, they get two cards; one for themselves and another for a family member or significant other perhaps. Since my Mom gave my uncle her second card, my boyfriend who has membership for his food business (Foody Feast in Toronto; easy to find on Instagram in case you're interested) gave me his second card. We just had to prove we lived together with a piece of mail. Anyhoo, take care Frank Latin. Sorry for rambling. LOL!

As someone who recently bought a casket at Costco, I can assure you that what you get for what you pay is an amazing value. The retail markup on coffins is so high at funeral homes and even on other websites. Costco sells high quality solid wood (we chose poplar) at a quarter of the price.
