    its actually $1.50 for a 1/4 lb hot dog and a twenty ounce soft drink plus a refill and you dont need a membership to buy one. when i was homeless and refused to beg, instead going dumpster diving in filthy disgusting dumbsters for cans. this was a life saver. i would only make $7 a day after 10 to 12 hrs of canning and im so greatful of having that food for the price.

    I think I read an article talking about how Costco has a significant number of executive and top managers who started out as low level warehouse employees. I believe they have a policy of trying to advance the employees through different positions and have programs for college and other training. Hiring from within helps to create a culture where the employees have a sense of loyalty and belonging.

      Yeap basic rules are:
      1. Have enough people on the floor to do the work!
      2. Give them all enough training so they can help each other out and not just worry about their job!
      3. Give them decent wages and maybe even benefits (In AUstralia a boss has to pay 1/10 of what the employee has earnt into their superannuation (Retirement fund!) The Employee still gets every cent they earnt but the boss must pay an extra 10th into an account they can not access normally so they have at least some money when they retire!
      4. Ask Employee's what you can do to make things better and than do it if it is practical!
      5. Happy Staff = Happy Customers!
      6. Happy Customers means return Business and better results!
      He did not talk about how Costco does Petrol something the rivals do no do!

We left Sam's Club because they raised the price on my Cherrioes and put up a sign saying that the price was the new lower price. Really p*****ed me off and I went to the manager to complain who looked at me like I had leprosy or something. We joined Costco the next day. Sam's Club hotdogs are better however.

    I worked at costco, the company is basically built on two major pillars; 1) the environment of the store - simplistic, not cluttered, neatly organized and efficient. 2) Fairness - they get membership money and in return they sell the items as cheap as they can and at a high quality as well as offering other benefits like gas. Memebership fee's also keep out wal-marts pajama wearing trailer park clientele which contributes to improving the environment of the place. Basically they have a business model of everyone, including employees, are treated fairly and it builds loyalty. Basically I can confirm to you that yes, their intentions were pure, its not a scam, they do want to treat their members well.

    • @BicyclesMayUseFullLane
      @BicyclesMayUseFullLane 6 лет назад +4

      I mean, it's still self-interest in the sense that membership fee is actually how they make money. But since everyone is better off (barring any negative externalities, like cars idling for hours while trying to actually get the cheap gas), nobody really cares.

      You do see the difference in Wal-Mart to a target too with the clientele because targets prices are a bit higher even cents make a difference you don't see a lot of trashy folks hanging there. And Costco it's a whole new level of different clientele they don't trash the place up for cheap single products. They sell by bulk and usually at a reasonable price but for those who know math well can tell that difference. Hell even Sams club same thing the membership is about 10 to 20 bucks less than Costco and you don't see as many trashy folks as Wal-Mart. And they're the same company and in some cases have both connected together like the one in evergreen park.

      Whatever it is, he’s still in the 1% and you’re still in the 99. You think making 14 bucks an hour is making a lot of money? That’s less than 30K a year, hardly anything these days, but for single people it’s ok as long as you don’t start a family, don’t have expensive tastes, and aren’t too materialistic. And why are you as a “single dude” supporting Costco anyway, where most everything is purchased in large volumes and bulk?

    • @mumbojumbo88
      @mumbojumbo88 6 лет назад +18

      It's all relative. $14/hour with benefits and a presumably steady work schedule and low turn-over rate is a whole lot better than Costco's competitors offer (most notably Walmart), even if it doesn't make you rich. I support Costco because I want them to do well. I don't take advantage of their return policy and I'd rather give them my money than a company who treats their employees like crap. Not to mention people like me can still get non-perishables and gas there. Where do you prefer to shop and why?

    • @GER-sm3gh
      @GER-sm3gh 6 лет назад

      It depends on what I’m buying, but three rules persist: a store must have what I want, it must sell it at a good price, and it must have an inviting atmosphere. Having knowledgeable employees helps too. They are in business to serve their customers, not the other way around. They will do well if they keep their customers happy, and if employees don’t like their compensation, they should terminate their employment. I realize it’s often not possible to find all three of my rules under one roof, But if I’m shopping for a laptop for example, I’ll go to Best Buy rather than Costco, because I will get better customer service and more product choices. Same with men’s clothing. I’ll go somewhere there are more choices instead of one or two tables of piles of clothes. For groceries, I like to keep it locally owned and operated. I haven’t been to a Starbucks in years because my area has better alternatives that serve much better coffee. Costco and Sam’s Club, (not Wal-Mart, I know Sams and Wal-Mart are the same company but they’re not the same thing), don’t meet my needs but apparently a lot of other people love them and that’s good for them.

  • @Mister-kk7mk

    Costco is basically the Amazon of retail. They have a 90-day return policy, no re-stocking fee, products are generally cheaper, and for me, its the best place to buy electronics (e.x, computers,t.v.,etc) They extend your warranty by 2 years. And if you use their Citi Visa card, it gets extended by another 2 years. It is also a place to go to get free lunch (samples) or really cheap hotdog and pizza.

They explained everything perfectly well when I got the membership, and in perfect English too. I should probably say, I'm in JAPAN. I don't know if that's a standard or what but there was at least one employee who was fluent in English and walked me through everything nicely (despite there being some confusion at the start). By the way, the membership is like $20 less here, 4,400 yen per year. • @theccanyon
      @theccanyon 5 лет назад +3

      Exactly. One of the biggest benefits Costco has over other stores is my trust in their product quality. Haven't gotten a flimsy, cheaply made, disgusting, etc. purchase in the years I've been a member with only one exception. And that's saying something, because I love me some Costco and have impulse control issues when I go there and buy way more than I came in there for 😅🤣.
      So yeah, if Costco has an item I need and it's not an outrageous price I won't bother price checking around or coupon clipping. Knowing that I'm getting what I paid for--and if not,I can return it, bcuz 100% refund policy--more than pays for the extra cents or dollar and change I could have hypothetically saved elsewhere. Less time, less hassle, less risk, and usually less cost per unit, though that's just a bonus at this day and age where it seems that products are made to break instead of last. And I know I'm one of many Costco members who shop there loyally for this very reason

    • @LouAntonioGiordano
      @LouAntonioGiordano 6 лет назад +70

      Jeff Stewart fact is a lot of people use their cars to get them from point A to point B are willing to sit in line for 20 minutes to get gas. That’s why there’s always a huge line-up.
      Also I drive a Honda Accord for commute every day. I also have an Infiniti Q60 for my girlfriend. We buy gas for the Infiniti at gas stations and I buy gas for my Accord at Costco. Most people don’t drive premium cars, so the quality of the gas doesn’t matter to them. But a few dollars saved do

    • @therealstubot
      @therealstubot 6 лет назад +36

      Ah hahaha Infinity a premium car lol... or were you talking about the honda? Regardless, if you are ok with trading 20 minutes for $2, then costco is heaven sent. I'm not. I'm not bashing people that want to wait in line for gas to save money, its just that the cost is too great for me.
      Now when I have to gas up my truck, I will brave the costco line, I can save quite a bit because the gas tank is 35 gallons. The savings is enough to justify the time sink. But once a week, getting commute gas... not worth it to me.

    I have been a Costco member for 5 years. It is worth everything! It make sense if your expenses is for a family. Everything you spend earns a 1% reward and every year the reward pays for the membership itself so it is free for me.
    I pay for cheaper goods and I spend enough so that the membership is effectively free.
    They also have incredible level of customer service. You can return anything you’re not satisfied with and they never hassle you. Makes your purchases stress free, since you can always return if it doesn’t fit, if it doesn’t work properly. Etcs.
    I also have the Costco credit card which gives me an extra year of warranty for electric or electronic goods. Example, I bought a TV for $400 which include extended warranty from square trade and credit card totaling up the TV warranty to 7 years.
    Even if you don’t buy anything from Costco. Just filling up gasoline from Costco saves you tons of money!
    BTW, Walmart has a copycat version of Costco but they can’t match Costco price nor the customer service.

    When Costco opened here in Iceland last year it became a *craze. Everyone* wanted a membership and on opening day there were traffic jams near the parking lot and gas station and people in line were offering other people money just for a shopping cart. *Shopping carts!*
    At first when someone said anything negative about Costco on facebook and other forums they were fanatically silenced by people tired of the high prices in other stores. But recently there have been reports of rising prices in Costco and the shine is wearing off. More Icelanders are starting to turn on Costco.

    One thing you didn't mention but help explain Costco's success is that they also have a strategy of 60-70% of items in their warehouses being staples like toilet paper, cereals, and detergent. With the rest being what they call "treasures" which are impulse buy items like blenders, purses, tvs, etc. So in turn, people will come out with more than they intended to buy.

      In our local costco, 1/4 of the floor plan is electronics. TVs, computers, tablets, phones, stereos, cameras. Another 1/4 is lawn furniture and "special buys" like gas grills, tool boxes, matresses... random stuff. All the clothes, food, tires, booze, soda are crammed into the back of the store. We only buy costco paper products and snacks. Sometimes they have some good fish.

      And they use "easter eggs" as a strategy to increase those impulse buys. That is, they take stuff away, and it might come back later...it might not. So if you know that, and you see something you might want to get, it might be what tips you into buying it. I seem to recall seeing Costco's CEO laying that out in a local interview.

    Costco Gasoline is Top Tier certified. Costco Gasoline is rated #1 in America in quality and they're also the strictest brand regarding gas pump maintenance, inspections, and calibrations. Notice how well-kept and clean Costco pumps are compared to other stations. Most gas stations are privately owned and entirely up to the owner to maintain and calibrate the pumps. You can probably do an episode on Costco Gasoline and the gasoline industry.
    I don't care about the price or wait time or distance. I've been a Costco member for 21 years. I shop at Costco after work and after the store closes, there are no lines at the pumps. All my cars run solely on Costco Gasoline. I trust their stringent standards. They have a reputation to uphold unlike those privately owned stations. Not many people know this but pumps have filters that need to be changed often. Costco changes these filters far more frequently than other gas stations. The result is you get cleaner gas so your car's own filter has to do less work. There are too many horror stories of people getting tainted gas at other gas stations because the owner neglected to maintain the equipment. Some truck delivery drivers even admit putting 87 octane in all the pumps because the owner asked them to. Anything to increase the bottom line. Some owners rig their pumps to give you a tiny bit less fuel than you paid for. I've seen a fair amount of those in my days. Before I started using Fuelly.com, I kept a very detailed log of my mileage. Certain gas stations around my route gave consistently poorer gas mileage and vice versa. I got tired of playing guessing games and now I use 100% Costco Gasoline in my fleet. Always consistent. If you drive the same route everyday, you'll even be able to notice when they switch summer/winter blends.

      @chief tp Remember, just because you haven't had a problem with gas in 25+ years of driving doesn't mean there is no such thing as bad gas. It definitely exists (although I have no idea how to pinpoint from where in the supply chain it "begins"). To contribute to your main point, you are correct in saying that there is no such thing as "Costco" gasoline, but only in that Costco does not control any part of the gasoline production process. In our area (SE US), they acquire it from ExxonMobil most of the time. What constitutes "Top Tier" however (regardless of whether or not it's strictly a marketing term) is the amount of additive added to the gasoline as a percentage. Costco is very strict on adding additive, both in certain amounts, and in quality. Other gas stations, especially privately owned ones, only add the minimum amount required federally, while Costco adds far more. This is what gives them the "#1 Top Tier" rating. Quality wise, every time there is an additive delivery, they take a sample from that delivery, date it and keep it on standby until the next delivery. If a member has a concern about the gas quality they take the sample from the last batch and send it in for testing to make sure it meets their standard and contains what it's supposed to. As far as pricing goes, the same concept applies as with the hot dogs & rotisserie chickens: the gas is kind of just a bonus to get you in the door/keep renewing your membership. They are lucky to break even and occasionally lose money on gas by maintaining a strict price-matching or price-cutting policy within a certain mile radius around the store.

    • @motopolak
      @motopolak 5 лет назад

      @chief tp I didn't say anything about making gas better. I simply said they increase the additive content in their gasoline (more than federally required by the EPA) which in turn gives them a "Top Tier" rating. "Additive" is an umbrella term which can include oxygenates or antioxidants, and can act as corrosion inhibitors or lubricants. The main additive I believe used at Costco is a deposit control additive, which is essentially a detergent that cleans the small passages in fuel injectors or carburetors; this allows a more consistent mixture of fuel & air which contributes to better gas mileage. Obviously I don't know the exact formula of what they use but I've handled it and studied it a bit, having worked at one of their gas stations for almost 1.5 years. To take samples they have a small tool which you can stick into the tank after an additive delivery (in simplest terms, imagine dropping a bucket attached to a chain down into a well to collect water). Keep in mind additive deliveries are fairly rare, but yes, they do indeed take a sample each time.

      GameStop at this point is the only retailer left that specializes in video games, so they've basically become a Monopoly in the game-selling industry here in the US. Even if retailers like Target and Wal-Mart sell video games, they're not nearly as cheap or large in variety as GameStop is able to sell their games.

    • @Kerrmunism
      @Kerrmunism 6 лет назад

      Shalk Tiem Yeah, honestly I agree, they have a huge monopoly, but it could still be an interesting video. Maybe something about how it gained the monopoly, or what you would have to do to shut it down, stuff like that. I'd hope that we just get more game stores period. They're probably going to be on a decline soon though because games through online stores (Eshop, Steam, PlayStation store, etc.) are not only cheaper but a better convenience. Combine that with PR backlash and unhappy employees (if RUclips told you anything,) they're at least gonna slow down a bit.

      Allow me to clarify.
      Walmart doesn't like keeping employees around, because that means paying them more than minimum wage after a while, and that costs money. So they have a high turnover of employees who never learn where anything is. They also pay their employees peanuts, so they're always crotchety about something. Finally, their store layouts just don't make any sense, and they're constantly moving things around so you can't find what you're looking for, and ultimately end up buying more than what you came in to get. And again, the employees are treated and paid like shit, so they in turn more easily succumb to treating customers like shit.

    I think Costco gets an A+ in showing how to run a business. Yes you have to buy a membership, yes you have to buy in bulk and shop in a warehouse, But, they know how to treat there customers and employees. As a business, if you give your customers and your employees what they want, you as a business will get what you want, and that is success !! To many companies just do not understand that concept.

      and employees with good morale and experience also improve know-how about what the customers like, how best to do the job, etc.
      many efficiencies grow from the bottom up, not top down.
      sadly, many blame the victims: the poorly paid and treated employees, not the often selfish and unproductive managers and owners.
      to add insult to injury, dogmatic holier-than-thou types sermonize about how others should live their lives.
      kudos to costco for showing another way.

      Test I don’t know which costcos you have been to but that certainly hasn’t been my experience with Costco. Their employees aren’t much better or knowledgeable than any of their competitors. Which is striking given the small number of choices among Costco’s inventory. And Costco gets an F for their checkout lanes which is a dealbreaker for many people when deciding where to shop. Long lines, no self checkouts, and indifferent employees have been my experience there every time. So much for the happy, thrilled-to-be-there Costco employee.

    In response to the dude @ 6:40, I worked at a Costco in Buena Park, California, Not sure what those aholes who replied to his comment are talking about. Costco benefits are top notch. Currently I am a federal government employee (TSA) and I can say without a doubt I miss my Costco benefits as they put the crap benefits i get with my current job to shame..
    At Costco, I had guaranteed wage increases, I had a 2 million dollar Life Insurance policy (it was dirt cheap so no reason not to pick it), also a $250,000 supplemental death & dismemberment insurance policy, which covers if you lost a limb or body part or died on the job, which also covered if you died on the way to and from work (i.e. auto accident), and their health insurance plan was a mere $18-22 dollars per month and was through Kaiser Permanent for medical, vision, and dental coverage (dental through diff company), and if you ever been to a Kaiser medical center/hospital, you'll know they give top notch service, no hassles with referrals, low co-pay/deductables (as low as $5 for some services, $10 prescriptions, up to $20 for specialists/emergency care), they take walk-ins, etc. Also costco has excellent 401k and other retirement/investment options through reputable companies such as T.Rowe Price and JP Morgan.
    Compare that to my government job, no such thing as guaranteed wage/salary increases, rather you're more worried about government layoffs on a regular basis than if you're going to get a raise each review, then when it comes to benefits... for the price of Costco's 2 mill life insurance policy, i barely get a standard 150k life insurance policy and there's no such thing as a supplemental death/dismemberment insurance plan, and shitty medical coverage though Aetna, which is lousy compared to Kaiser, and cost more per month to boot ($49), I mainly hate that everything must be done through referrals, appointments, and everything cost $20 in copayment/deductables, and to see a specialist, you better expect to shell out $60, and you can only see a specialist through referral only, which is extremely annoying where Kaiser you can simply call up the specialist department and schedule an appointment or literally walk-in to make an appointment or if available, told they can see you immediately.
    ...and don't even dare think about going into emergency care, unless it's a serious emergency, as that's not covered the same as Kaiser... not like kaiser where all services are covered under an "umbrella price", so doesn't matter what sort of emergency service you get, it's all one price, so for example: I went in two times over two days in a row with abdominal pain, and both visits I had 2 CT scans performed (turned out to be small hernia that required surgery), and once all was said and done, my bill, including surgery was approximately $60.. compared with Aetna where I went to an emergency room with blue shield for a simple fractured ankle a few years ago which just required a simple normal x-ray and a cast (no surgery), ended up with a bill of ~$300.. So in other words, rather than all (or most) emergency services being covered as part of the co-pay like with Kaiser, it seems emergency care cost with Aetna can vary depending on what services are performed.. So if a simple x-ray and cast can cost $300, i'd hate to imagine what 2 CT Scans and surgery would have cost...
    Also to give you an idea of what Plan Costco offers their employees with medical, when I had left costco, I had attempted to keep my same medical plan, but pay for it out of pocket... turns out it was one of Kaiser's top plans, COBRA, and would have cost me ~$500-600 per month just to keep the same benefits... Instead I opted for a lower $230 plan which i kept to hold me over until benefits kicked in at my new job at the time.

    I love Costco. It is seriously one of my favorite stores.
    And to the person who works there - don't listen to people who say that it's going to eventually be like Walmart. Costco's excellent treatment of their employees is a part of their reputation and, I don't doubt, a differentiator between them and their biggest competition - the Walmart-owned Sam's Club. I don't think that Costco will change their corporate culture anytime soon.

    What impressed me about Costco is superb customer service. A few months ago, I was at their food court and my drink cap came apart and the drink all over my shoes and socks. A young woman was cleaning nearby, she saw me and immediately came to help me clean up. The counter saw what had happened and he immediately brought out a new glass of the drink. They were really on the ball and took care of my needs in a completely professional way. They made me a lifer. We are executive members and generally get $ 400-500 because we also get our medicines there as well.

    My wife and I have no kids, so initially we "ignored" joining Costco as we don't need a lot of bulk food, but eventually we crunched the numbers and just a couple nonperishables and their organic chicken breast (which we can freeze) made it worth joining just from the savings on those few items compared to a more traditional store. Those few items each month are enough to pay for the $60 membership multiple times over. They also have some great side services like the food and tire center.

    One thing I noticed you didn't mention was their business card. Their business card allows you to purchase products for business, personal, and resale use. I work at a locally owned restaurant, we make a lot of our sauces and stuff from scratch. Probably around 1/4 of all our food and some other supplies comes from Costco. We probably spend around 800 dollars there a week. It's good for supporting local businesses as well.

  • @Spiegelgeist

    For people saying "Costco looks like a Sam's club/BJs/etc whats the difference?" The difference is Costco pays it's workers fair wages (granted the free sample people are from a different company) and doesn't exploit them. Their employees look happy to work there, and they're happy to help you. And even still Costco keeps making money hand over foot, because happy workers ultimately = happy customers.
    Costco is the premier example of showing that stockholders/shareholders are short sighted dipshits who ultimately kill companies in the unending search of greater short term profits. Costco's leadership (who come from within the company, you gotta work your way up.) tells them to fuck off and keeps on making money. Due to coming up from within the company, they have a long term view on profits, and business health, which should be the standard.
    Costco should stand as the model for public companies, because if they don't, companies'll just keep going out of business due to short sighted greed and all we'll have is like google and amazon. Capitalism may reward the short term thinkers, but it REALLY rewards those who think of the long-term.
