Normally if you don't use fake tears, to well them up in an acting scene, directors and actors themselves try to find triggers to do it. Such as bad memories of their own life and other things. For example, in Scream, when Drew Barrymore's character Casey is scared to the point of tears, that happened because Wes Craven told her graphic stories of animal cruelty. Barrymore whom is an avid animal lover and animal rights activist was needless to say upset. So I cannot imagine what Aaron was thinking when he did this. He literally looks and sounds like someone who went through a terrible tragedy. This is Shakespere levels.
Aaron Paul’s acting in this scene is superb, so much so that this scene tears me apart every time. It’s almost like he took something traumatic from his real life and put it here.
I caught that the first time I saw the episode. And when Jesse comes back from Rehab and tells Walt: "I'm the bad guy," the look on Walt's face says it all, as in: "What have I done to this poor kid?" I think to an extent Walt did care for Jesse in the early seasons, but over time Walt became just as corrupt as the men he associated with in the drug world, and afterward saw Jesse as a tool, a means to an end. Ironically, despite the fact he wanted to kill Jesse, Mike is actually the one came in afterward and showed genuine concern for Jesse, like trying to wake Jesse up to what Walt truly was, or had become, and proved to be the one to have a lasting influence on him, as in El Camino, Jesse is last scene driving in Alaska, the very place Mike said he would go if he were in Jesse's shoes. Something else I noted about Mike, is that when he scolded Jesse, he never did it in a degrading way. He did let Jesse know the stakes and where he stood, but he never degraded Jesse like how Walt did. He showed Jesse a level of respect that I personally don't believe that Walt ever had.
The way he repeats no while sobbing, and the way he held onto Walter was so realistic. That agonizing feeling of hopelessness and despair truly captured in this scene. When you have cried like that, you will understand how devastating this scene is. And how hauntingly painful it is. I’ve seen nothing in cinema that comes close to capturing this moment. I can never watch any other movie or show that has this much power, and if I had a genie one wish would be to watch this masterpiece for the first time again!!!
This scene breaks my heart. I know Jesse is a burnout and in a horrible place right now but he’s still just a young man who witnessed something absolutely horrific happen to his girlfriend and he has no support system at all. Walt coming in there and getting Jesse to put his arms around him so he can stand him up on his feet just opened the flood gates for him. Walt is all he’s got right now in that moment to give him comfort. It’s so sad. Aaron Paul is an incredible actor and his acting in this scene was stellar.
