    Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.
    Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

    • @EncryptedLiberty
      @EncryptedLiberty 10 дней назад +1

      I think orignally this scene was more in keeping with the earlier episodes' tone. The juxtaposition of silliness with the darkness of the criminal underworld. One could imagine a frantic, energetic, slightly exasperated Saul running around hastily grabbing stuff and shoving it in a bag. Finally turning to Jesse to do the part he's good at--telling him what to say and what not to say. Becoming flustered that Jesse is basically shut down, giving him a goofy and well-meaning, but generally inappropriate speech to console him/pep him up. Then giving up when Jesse only returns a baffled expression, making Jesse say the line he's supposed to say, and leaving just as quick as he came.
      Banks, of course, has a wildly different tone that is more respectful of the gravity of the moment for Jesse. It gives the whole show a different tone, and may have been a major turning point for the show to veer even deeper into drama and away from dark comedy.

    Banks plays a good balance, he's not completely unaffected by seeing a very young woman dead at the end of a sad, self-destructive road with her boyfriend weeping in the next room,
    he isn't gonna weep about it, but you can tell he's sad to see it, Banks does a great job of giving us just that little morsel without stepping over into making Mike too soft and/or sympathetic, hardened, but still ultimately human.

    It was a cool callback in BCS when, in the scene where Mike tells Saul about Walter White, Mike walks into the room wearing sunglasses just like he does in this scene.
    He then conspicuously dropped them afterwards, presumably when they had a better idea of who Mike actually was and realised he didn’t need to wear sunglasses everywhere to be intimidating, but it is a nice bit of continuity to show he was wearing them until that the end of S2 regardless.
