As someone who LFG's King's Fall every week, I'm happy to inform you that you do not need to pick the relics up at the same time. The timer begins counting from the moment the relics spawn. Picking up the relics doesn't change the timer, it simply allows you to see what the timer is. So the most effective way to clear the first encounter is to pick up the relics as soon as possible after they've spawned. Waiting to "pick them up together" only diminishes the time you have remaining for no benefit.

You could blame your teammates for not killing the hive knights that spawn and head towards the taken side during totems. Hive kills do not count towards your brand stacks, so the people depositing or killing the taken knights up top to kill them if they can.
