The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT RUclips channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

@@SCPFanMY That is a good point! I have seen tiny solar panels that are light enough and can roughly power a mini dc motor. To be fair, I have no idea how power intensive this new insect-like mechanism is, but given my previous experiences on drones (FPV, VTOL, etc. I worked for DJI😀), they are usually less efficient than what the most of us would expect. Solar panel also only provides instantaneous power (i.e. instant death when there is no direct sunlight), and therefore having one alone is probably not optimal for drones haha.

@@jbhann I wasn't saying about using technology on your enemies. I was talking about developing the technology before your enemies. That's very different things.
My point was, if we decide that advantageous technology is evil and forbid it, someone else in the world will definitely not do that and develop it anyway. But in that case they will be an experts in that technology and we won't.

I don't get the claimed advantages over regular spinning propellers.. There's still rapidly moving parts sticking out of it that can bump into things. It also seems way less efficient, as the wings are constantly changing direction and only generate lift on the downstroke.

0:45 where is she getting her information about drones? walmart?
drones at least the one i built is pretty nimble and durable asf. it only needs wide open space because its fast. i've had it do somersaults on the ground, sliding across my roof crashing into trees. and i've only broke it once by letting it drop 150ft because i was new to controlling it at the time. carbon fiber is pretty durable stuff especially when made correctly.

Feels like the cable it is connecting to provides the power. I don't think we have battery that is less than 6 grams and capable of supplying enough energy for flight (if so, they would advertise it in the video as well). It would be nice to see if it's thrust to mass beats traditional brushless DC motors and propellers
