- In this video we diagnose and fix a volkswagen Tsi with an extended crank. The engine has a long cranktime when it has been unused for a few hours. The second time it stats right up!
The video will demonstate the importance of a profesional oscilloscope.
If you want to learn more about the scope i'm using please visit;
www.gmto.nl/ne...
In te video i show how to use a scope to check engine timing and
check the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump).
I hope you enjoy the video.
Diagnosedan.
First guess before watching video: high pressure fuel pump?
Follow-up question: does the GMTO scope have custom scales on the Y-axis? Would be cool to see the actual fuel rail psi converted automatically from the 5-volt sensor! Great diagnosis, Dan!
Thanks Ivan Yes it can, they even have a accessoiry to measure the actual pressure.
I could even do a more detailed measurement and it would show the individial strokes of the pump. But the test i showed is the fastest one to diagnose this problem😁
Cool! Very definitive test :)
That is the most logical assumption given the symptom.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics , Hi Ivan GMTO is the best there is. I know you're using PICO but this is even better.

Hello Dan how are you doing my boss I have been watching your RUclips channel for a very long time now.but I have nothing to say.all I have to say is your are the best of the best. Sir please help us with writing diagram that is what we don't have in Africa I am from west Africa sierra Leone please please.i love this job so much, again you are the best ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm a diagnose Dan fan!
Engineering is my life, I repair hospital machines for a living and get all kinds of radios, TV's, cell phones, iPads, washing machines, engines and everything else from friends and family to repair.
Keep the videos coming and don't change your style, you make every video concise and to the point showing all the stuff the duffers don't have the guts or brains to attempt!
Great demonstration of how to recreate a cold start conditions by simply draining fuel rail pressure. There is definitely a difference in the rise of fuel pressure... and was probably never checked at the dealership. Not too many of my customers would be willing to go for a pump (even if I explained the reason for the longer cranking time) if there are no other issues than a slightly longer extended crank time when first starting the engine. Great diagnosis step though that I will start to incorporate!
Thomas EXOVCDS,Thanks for the great comment Thomas. I think you are in Europe now! I Can tell because of time of this comment! Would be in the middle of the night in Canada🤣
DiagnoseDan Yup... I'm in your time zone now.
Not many customers would bring it to a specialist for a long crank in the morning either ....
Nice Diag. Dan it takes me back 40 years when I took
diesel in Collage in a Motive Power Tech. Course.
Being in the USA ( Mitchell pro demand), the wiring diagrams are odd. But it's funny. I worked for Mercedes Benz 12 years. The diagrams actually make more sense now that I think back. Thanks for the videos. I retired from cars. I'm now a boat mechanic. Similar but different world. Boat technology is at least 10 years behind. I just saw my first MAP sensor on a boat. Elevation plays a huge roll in boat performance.
The greatest automotive teacher in the world thank you
Thank you so much for experience sharing. I appreciate the fact the you speak very clearly. Speech and video very Easy to understand. Bedankt voor de moeite.
Thank you very much, Bedankt!😉👍
I love electrical troubleshooting videos. I was an aircraft electrical systems specialist in the US Air Force got out and went to engineering school. Even though I do design work now, I still find technician troubleshooting interesting. I could watch 30 videos like this.
No doubt having the right knowledge and understanding of how things really work leads you to actually fix the issue without guessing, thanks for your time of making this videos really helps people who want to learn like me, i just wish to have all that equipment very expensive, sometimes people dont wanna pay whats fair for us technicians to fix this cars and to invest in this necessary equipment to get the job done right the first time. We should get pay better because this isnt easy anymore. Good job
Good tip on disconnecting the vvti valve to prevent pcm control. I have to second the motion that the software is very, very user friendly and well adapted for beginners use. The amount of research that the techie has to do, is drastically reduced and lessens the repair time. The era of the scope in everyday usage has arrived !! Great video, well illustrated and explained.
Tom OConnor as you saw in the video this diag. could not have been done proper without a scope!
Fuel Pump is the weak link in fuel injection from my experience. Still very reliable though. Dan, I hope you never stop making videos, they are outstanding. Your channel is underrated, this won’t be the case for very long. I kept trying to figure out what scope you used, now I know!
Thanks Jason😁
Great Dan it is a great value to have a channel from Europe with a great mechanic like you.... it is not easy to find a wiring diagram for Euro cars for a diy
Thanks Johan! I know information is hard to find! 😭😭
Good, nice to see annoying little problems can be fixed, not just the 'dead in the water' problems.
Really enjoyed this video. You are so thorough and full of common sense. :) Your command of the English language is impeccable. I've never understood why we Americans, generally, speak no other languages. My reason is probably laziness. :) Thank you Dan.
It has to do with schools, over here there are 3 language classes you need to do (Dutch,German, english)
Besides this you can choose 2 other classes if your interested, like French,Spanish, or Latin.
Great video I sure would have loved to seen the amp wave form on that regulator. Dan provides really great scope analysis.
Cheers Dan, got a 2.0tsi octavia in the shop, identical problem, helped me out loads. Your scope is better than the one on VW ODIS by the way 👍
I'm happy, that RUclips recommended your videos to me. They are really good and informative.
I'll Thank RUclips for recommending me!😉 Great having you here Andre!👍
I am new to this, have now watched all your videos so far, they have taken me from knowing nothing to a basic understanding thanks Dan. i have still a lot to learn yet
Hi Dan,
I have an Audi A3 8PA with an automatic gearbox. This car is not FSI or TSI but i experience a similar problem with this in your video.
When the car is sitting for a few hours the it doesn't start up immediately and to start it i must put some throttle. After that when i shut off the car and start it again it starts up immediately. I already changed the fuel pump, and the big fuel filter. The problem exists for almost a year and no one can fix this (3 workshops).
Keep the good work!
I was waiting for you to casually dump on dealership techs. Well done Dan, subtle genius again.
Middle Cove Motors, I'm not trying to dump dealerships or their techs. I know of some really great techs working at dealerships. I'm just telling what happened😉.
DiagnoseDan of course you are right,
I was just not surprised the dealership dismissed the complaint.
Ben ik dan echt de enigste Nederlandse comment?
Pas begonnen met kijken vanwege het blijven lopen van een brandstofpomp (soms wel, soms niet).
Super video waar zeker iets van te leren valt, thx :D
Good video Dan, thanks my car sometimes cuts out right after a cold start but is OK when hot. I think it's my fuel pump... It been like it for ages, so I'm living with it.... Until I get stranded somewhere with no fuel pressure! This customer is doing the right thing. Fix a fault at the first hint of it appearing. I'll make no comment on the VW engine, beyond saying I was pleasantly surprised to see the fuel pump housing and fittings were all metal :-D
Thank you. Enjoyed every seconds and felt as if i am i an engineering lesson. Awesome video, intense content and helpful video
Good video, Dan.
Would not have known that and probably ended up looking for a leak on the high side. Less than 1 second to build pressure - good rule of thumb.
M Barry, of the pressure in the rail drops fast than you might have a leaking injector 😁.
Thank's Dan for sharing the video. That VW/AUDI engines got many timing failures, we need "known good" waveforms to be sure before we "make the call" heheh. best is to start to make your own library of waveforms when you got the chance and time
andreas kontopoulos, i upload them into the library so everyone can use them!😁
I'm not mechanic but love your work. I think you should open a technical school as there is a huge shortage of skilled technicians
Another fantastic video mate it's so important to have a scope on modern cars will having said that on any car makes your life so much easier
I don't know of any other way to do this test accurate without a scope!
This really is excellent. Most impressed by the way you methodically go from one step to another, without wild guesses. Thank you.
Great tip about disconnecting the vvt plug to ensure you get the base uncorrected timing. :)
Benjamin Rich, Always so this to capture the basic setting!😁💪👍
you got my head spinning Dan! another brilliant presentation and FIX! cheers NZ
The quality of your work and structured fault finding approach stands for itself. You don’t need a logo in the corner. Please take if off. It creates an asymmetry in your videos.
The logo helps viewers remember the source of the video. Visual symmetry is immaterial in this endeavor.
yep typical. unlike diesel there is little to no lubricity in petrol. high pressure pumps never last long enough. very good explanation of your diagnostic method.
richard cranium Thanks!😁
I use picoscope with 4 channels, but that system is perfect and simple to use...cheers from portugal
ricardo mendes, the pico is also a great scope!
Hi Dan! Thank you very much, you help us to earn money to feed our families in difficult times. May God grant you and your loved ones health and well-being!
This is my new marathon video now. I love your video Dan! It’s really helpful to technician like me who just started out in diagnosis. 🙂
Just found your channel can’t stop watching.great videos.so clear and easy to follow
simon sherwood Ha Ha Ha lol. Thanks for watching! Great comment!👍
Very good diag dan. Scope is the very best Tool. Thanks for your Videos. All good for you and your Family.
Thanks for giving me a refresher course on scoping a car.
Cant believe you dont have more followers, your videos excellent
Kenny Patrol 2 Zero Thank you!👍
few people have the mind needed to reverse engineer problems... LOL. We have a curious mind!!
@@glasser2819 Curiosity brings progress!
Learnt quite a lot from this post. You are the man, dan
I have a huge problem with this channel! The videos aren't coming out frequently enough, we need more! We're hungry!
Super Mario ,i know 😁
Mario is right Diagnose Dan.
Come on dan we need more!!!
I like the clarity the way you explain making easy to understand
Man that’s a nice feature to have a known good. Seems like this system is heads and shoulders over the us systems
hddm3 it is great!
Excellent case study my friend. I really like your scope. Having right information is essential for today's automotive diagnostic. Cheers👍👍
It sure is! System knowlege is key!
Thank you for this wonderful work. The first question is what is the name of the device and what is the program inside it and how much is the value of this device with its content
Dan, you are an excellent teacher! Thank you
Found your channel, wow great diagnostic with very well described process! You have a new subscriber for sure. Not surprised to see you got Ivan's attention Dan. (added benefit: I might learn a few Dutch terms) Thanks for your efforts.
Bob T, Ha Ha in a year you'll know all faultcodes in Dutch! Thanks for Subscibing!👍
MR Dan, fixed again yes indeed and i approve it is fixed 100% good video and info as always thanks for ur time and sharing ur knowledge. cheeeeers
j georges Cheers! And thanks for watching!👍
What a great diagnostician you are Mr. Diagnose Dan. 🤘
Love your videos. You can also see this data using vcds so no need for scope!
Brilliant Video Dan, excellent use of the scope, diagnosis is a serious skill. the amount of times I have witnessed technicians changing a multitude of parts in order to fix a car because there underlying diagnosis skill was poor which is bad for the garage and worse for the customer. Brilliant video
pcgrey69 thanks for the nice words!😁
That's GMTO scope looks awesome WOW so much detail so many goodies is in that scope makes my Snap-on one look like a joke
bodgit and leggit garage, snap-on is fine to do some checks but if you want more detail and more channels this is the one to go with😉
hay if you think your snap-on scope is bad, I've got a Autel Maxiscope MP408, not one prefix setting on it, but in saying that, it make you work to get a wave form, but it does work, OK I know its CARP! ;-)
Dan new sub here from the USA great channel, how do i get a scope like this 1 i went to the site but i dont understand the languages on it keep up the great videos thanks
Steve's Auto N Truck's, you can do a few things! You can change the language of the site, you can e-mail or call them. But you can also go to the site of Ryan Automotive it is a English site, they will be more than happy to help you!
Gave video weer.
Thanks much Dan. Appreciate all the time you take to make the videos and allow us access to your knowledge Cheers 👍
Thanks Arthur👍😉
Like a Boss!!! Your the man Dan! That scope looks fantastic, always enjoy your videos very professional and I'm always learning something
robinsonsauto, thank you Wil🤣, Did you know I'm also a Professional singer?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
DiagnoseDan your welcome Dan, I didn't know that 😁🤣🤣🤣 I was hoping to hear you sing maybe in the next video 😎 unless I missed something but I'm pretty sure I didn't because you kept my attention the whole time!! That's a great teacher so thank you
Always genius, big like, I used to watch all your previous videos
Thanks for watching my video's it's appreciated !👍
Thanks Dan! for every single movie !
Maciej Bielen, your welcome!😁
Brilliant diagnosis again, thank you my favourite Dutch man, cheers sandy
Sandy thank you so much for the great comments, i think you were one of the first subscribers!
Thanks!!!!👌👍
Now back in the mid to late 80's GM Bosch SFI, the system was supposed to hold rail pressure for quite a while. Back then I replaced pumps (or the infamous isolator diaphragm), regulators, and injectors because they leaked fuel back to the tank or into the engine, and this was even with a fp Prime running 3-4 seconds and with a pressure of only 30-60 psi.
So it looks this problem is not new🤔
Well back then we had terrible issues with clogged injectors due to poor detergent additives in fuel as well as pintle type injectors that clogged easily. We did not have the luxury of odb 1 or 2, or scopes even. We could look at codes and live data and also a device that recorded while you drove and saved it and also upload or link to GM techs remotely who tbh probably weren't much better at diagnosing street problems based on some of the ideas for things they told us to try. Oh and our version of "known good" was the supply of known good parts each mechanic kept in and and under his tool box. If parts were easy enough to try out to verify a condition, that's what we did.
Thanks Dan, for this valuable infos you share with us !
Your welcome!👍👍
Dan, you are the best. I learned a lot, and thank you for that!
Good teacher you make it look easy job well done
Excellent Dan !! loving that diagnostic/scope program you are using. 💯
WEStTEXAs Thanks, so do I 😂
Great lecture of diagnosis. Thank you
Well done for the excellent explanation I helped them very much I have the same vehicle with the same problem and it helped me a lot to solve the problem
That's great!
IM ONE OF YOUR FOLLOWERS IN THE PHILIPINES, LIKE YOUR VIDEOS ABOUT SCOPES, I WONDER HOW TO MORE UNDERSTAND ABOUT IT, BECOUZE I DONT HAVE ONE
Dan fixed it... Great tutorial thanks for your helpful video and time..superb.
Thanks Paul!👍
Nissan .3.5 2003 no start
Great video Dan! GMTO scope is pretty impressive. Especially with that database and all its features.
I have a Pico which I love but if I didn't I would really consider buying a scope like yours. 👌
It is a great scope Dylan! And it's getting better with every update!😁
This was great! Sadly i dont have the scope and its not in the budget, but with the exact same proble, I am confident the high pressure fuel pump is my issue
Excellent video, very well done. I enjoy learning from you
Thank you Peter
Diagnos Dan. Number one keep it up
Thanks👍
very professionnal diagnostic
greate job man
عبدالله العريبي Thanks!
I just share your Video with my friends because all your Video very good .thank you so much for your effort to tech us
Thanks for that!
Your stuff remains the best! Hennie
Dan your still the man.
Tam🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video and thank very much. This clearly explains the problem i may be having with my car.
Great video! And thanks for the nice words about our Gmto scope. 😉
spin1275gt, no problem how are you connected to gmto?
I work for gmto 😊
Ik ken niemand bij Gmto die spin1275gt heet🤣🤣
Haha nee dat wil ik geloven. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk ik werk er ook nog niet zo lang. Maar vraag maar eens naar Kevin als je belt 😁
spin1275gt I would love to get a look at your scope for my channel
I enjoyed this video same as before....great video
Naushad Ali Thanks al the way over there in India😁
Super. Dan is the man 👍👍👍
😉
Very good content and in in depth
Thank you!😊
honda steps to remove the pump is first rotate counterclockwise 180° from tdc and relieve pressure since its very high pressure
Thanks for the feedback!
I love your videos Sir! Thank you very much!!
Thanks!
Thanks dan,you are great technician from european vehicle....❤️❤️😘😘
Thanks for sharing, it impresses you are a very good technician
rafael valenzuela Thanks man👍
DiagnoseDan ist the Best 💪🏻👍👍🤝👏👏👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent video Dan. I came here from a Bodgit and Leggit mention. :-)
Qwerty1235945 Thanks, great to have you here!😁
Cannot appreciate enough.. very good video, I am gonna buy this scanner too.. thanks
Another great video Dan !!!
canh lam Thanks for watching!😁
Great video Dan! I like your gear, the only problem is the price. It's prohibitive for DIY-ers. If they (ATIS) made a "lite" version or a pay per vehicle subscription I'd bite the bullet and get one.
It's not Atis that is the most expensive part it's the scope. 😜
Thanks for the lessons Mr Dan
Nice one Dan, I like the diagnostics software. I use snap on at present.
I had the same problem on a Suzuki 1.6 engine. Was the vvt cam phaser that was losing oil pressure overnight....
Excellent video, Dan thanks
Patrol 2 Zero your welcome👍
excellent your really know how to explain the steps will like to have the links of the European car wiring diagram which you mention call helan goodman i can not find the link if you can send me the link thanks
great video Dan. learning lots about scopeing from you tips!! keep um coming!
Carl Wensierski that's great to hear!😁
Hello Dan
Best videos for diagnostic in RUclips!
Can you please shear with us, from which books are you checking the electrical schematics? Are they specific for each car mark or universal?
Thanks in advance!
Mitko Koev, The wiring diagrams are made by Hella Gutman!😁
Great job, full of great knowledge. Thank you.
