  • In this episode, I'm making the neck and heel blocks for this guitar. Then with the help of a friend, we'll use a Charles Fox style side bender to bend the padauk sides and get them in the mold. I'll then glue the sides together and radius them to match the plates. This is a big step forward on this build.

That was probably the clearest explanation of grain direction for those end blocks that I have ever seen. Nicely done!

"See how it turns out" - mnifty catch phrase - especially when it pretty much always turns out good as gold - love your work

Working out pretty well looking good. Great color and grain on the sides.

I've really enjoyed your videos. They are really good. It's easy to tell you put effort into them. I just built my first acoustic (a Martin travel style) and have learned a lot from that and your videos. Appreciate your skill and efforts.

All that sanding must have made you a mean salsa dancer. Great looking result so far.

Thanks! It bends pretty good when it gets hot.

The other reason to avoid gluing on the end grain is to prevent expansion of the blocks across the grain. Running them in the opposite direction can split the soft top of the guitar when they expand and contract with humidity. Nice video!

Great project and great videos! I'm subscribing for sure. I like that you chose an interesting wood with Padauk. I like it a lot, although that carrot-colored dust really lets you know how good your shop dust collection is! I've wanted to build my own acoustic for a long time now and even have three sets of Padauk to choose from once I bite the bullet and get started.

The dust gets everywhere. I love the color though. Can't wait to get this together.

Good stuff man. I did the same thing as you and kept wanting to call the blocks differently. The “heel” block name tripped me up for some time, haha. Anyway, great video!

It appears you have some spreaders at the waist of the guitar that weren’t in the mold video. Can you comment on what they are?
    And awesome video series!!

It would have been nice to know the temperature the padauk was bent at and how long you let it heat before bending?
To trim off the ends of the sides, I just mark them in the mold and take them to the bandsaw, easy.

Do you have the sizes and thickness of the material please. Also what type of glues do you use as we have different ones here.

So the top and bottom you used the same 20ft radius sanding dish? I am just wanting to make sure I understood.

Hey Jeff. What size of radius dish did you use for the back?

You might want to check out Dave Dickens RUclips channel last year for his GGBO 2021 build he did an acoustic build and he made his own wood bending iron and went through the process of how he did it and it only cost a few dollars to build and was simple.

Hello, thank you for the great info! Nice work! Question.... I don't have a drum sander. Is it possible to use a thickness planner for the side thickness?

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop  Год назад

You might be able to use a planer, I wouldn't trust the one I have though. It gets too much snipe at the ends. I have seen many people use a hand plane and card scrapers too. It looks time consuming but it totally works. Thats how it was done long ago.
