  • In this video, I'll be installing the spanish cedar kerfing as well as the side braces for my acoustic guitar build. I finally get to remove the sides from the mold. This is exciting.

With your braces and kerfing, the wood species you use has an effect on the sound quality.
Harder woods for kerfing produces a more mellow tone as they dampen the vibration of the sound box, softer woods absorb more vibration producing a crisp cleaner sharper tone. The braces do the opposite ironically so using softer wood for one, and harder for the other creates a more balanced tone, where using all soft produces a vibrant punchy tone, harder wood for both produces a rich lovely mellow hue.
The location of the braces determines the overall sound reverberance inside the sound box which effects overall volume and sound compression.
There's a million ways to lay the bracing out, and each will have a subtle difference in the sound of the instrument.

Looks like I have some catching up to do. you were mentioned on the Crimson Live stream today in chat and I realized I had not seen any alerts from you and low and behold You tube cut you from the team again... that looks really nice mate. I have to go back and see how you got to this point. the last video on this build I saw was when you made all the long strips to hold the supports on the front and back.

Oh thats awwsome. I'll have to go back and watch that Crimson stream. Thats weird how it just decides to cut people out. Lol. No worries. The videos are there.

To my eyes, the time lapse looked fine. I didn't really notice the flickering so much. By the way, my new goal is to be able to keep the tip of my glue bottle as clean as you do. Seriously, I think I learned something about staying neater with the glue while watching your technique.

Thanks. I'm still working on trying to be neater with the glue myself. It still gets plugged up a lot, but I try to clean it often to prevent that.

Really glad you did not have the same reaction as Todd from Sweet T guitars did to the paduk when he works with it. He now uses barrier cream and sleeves when working with paduk sens he breaks out really bad with it. Your guitar is turning out really nice looking so far at least. The acoustic builds are definitely a lot more demanding to build and skill level and tools are needed to pull it off. Also a lot of patience. For the end wedge I suggest something to contrast the paduk either a big contrast like a maple wedge it more figured the better of more subtle like a walnut wedge.

I'm glad I didn't have a reaction like that either. So far, I haven't come across any species that affected me in any negative way. Hopefully it stays that way. Lol.

When you drove the bus, we’re the neck and end block a bit proud of the sides to begin with?

No, The sides were taller than the blocks by a little bit.

FYI - It's called "kerfed lining" - not "kerfing". Kerfing is the process of cutting the slots (the kerfs) into the lining to make it flexible. Yeah, I know - I'm getting picky - but, in my world, accuracy counts.
I'm enjoying the build series. Looking forward to the continuation as your project progresses.

And, Ervin Somogyi suggests putting the kerfing cuts on the inside of the lining.
