Or maybe it has nothing to do with it... (Heard online #42)

- In this edition of Heard online we look at claims that common sleeping pills may cause dementia.
We find that the prodromal symptoms of dementia are exactly what you would expect a prescription of a benzodiazepine or z-drug for. Which explains why an association, but not evidence of causation, exists.

Thanks for all of your insightful videos, Coach Daniel. What is your take on SSRIs (anti-anxiety/anti-depression medication like Lexapro) coupled with your NATTO experiential approach to sleep? Can SSRIs facilitate the formation of a better sleep mindset and therefore better sleep habits/patterns?
Hi Kebin,
Anytime, so glad you’re here 😊
I think what matters is our thoughts, our interpretation of the circumstances, and I think chemicals have no impact themselves at the level of thoughts, they are much too complex.
So I think when we aren’t wondering if we should or shouldn’t, then it doesn’t really matter whether we do or don’t.
Hi Daniel!
After long time of having a good relationship with my sleep, suddenly, I came accross articles that expose that sleep problems usually correlate with thalamus damage and some dementias in high %. Sometimes, it can be an initial symptom. And suddenly, out of the blue, I'm starting to think again that maybe the hours that I'm sleeping do matter... That my sleep onset do matters... That my night awakenings do matter again... I was in peace with all those aspects since I was absolutely convinced that my body would somehow work it out and would put me to sleep at some point or another, and that my body would at least give the bare minimum that he needs to keep going; I was completely sure that no changes in my sleep would mean that something was wrong with my body. But now, since I know that it can be an initial symptom of so scary diseases, and there's physical cause behind it... I feel that my peaceful relationship with my sleep has come to an end, and again, I find myself scared and anxious about my sleep patterns (Oh! And scared of SFI and FFI now, when those illness did not trigger me in the past, haha). Because maybe my body is not as capable as I thought it was, maybe he'll not be able to give the bare minimum sleep as I used to trust because he can't, and maybe someday, me having trouble sleeping really means something is wrong physically speaking...
Any thoughts on how to improve my relationship with sleep again and on how to deal with those fears? The last thing I want is find myself again trembling in bed because of anxiety, scared of how my sleep will be tonight, and if X or Y sleep pattern could be symptom of Z.
Sorry for the long comment and thank you sooo much time for your time!
Hi Agnes,
Feel free to share the articles so we can review them. And if you post a brief question, I promise I’ll reply!

My question is... If sleep disturbances might be a sign that something is physically wrong in the parts of the body that are in charge of sleep (neurodegeneration, thalamus problems...), how can I not fall into the rabbit hole of being overfocused and worried about my sleep again (and affecting it as a consequence of that arousal)?

I am sleeping somedays 5 hours but still feeling unrefreshed? What should i do?
Hi Sumit, check the Unrefreshing sleep playlist in the description of any new video- that can help!
Hi Daniel I love your teachings and videos, I am so glad I found you! … only a few weeks ago when I stumbled on your videos.. thank goodness I did as I have struggled with insomnia since august .. The hyper arousal in the early days was dreadful, i was so bad I went through nights of no sleep at all and felt very down.. was so desperate l begged for sleeping pills from my doctor then I changed to amitriptyline 20mg for insomnia which I still take.. This works to some degree however I still have nights when im a mess but in no way a state like I was back in the summer of last year however and these days especially since viewing your channels I’m tackling insomnia much better … and I’m contemplating a course by coach joseph from the UK (I’m in the UK too)! who is very similar to your ways.. just gotta sort my finances out before I go for it!The content of what you discuss from the articles is interesting… my grandma lived to be 98 and took Valium most of her adult life every day and was fit as a fiddle .. body and mind! Also I wanted to say Ive been watching your videos especially the ones where you interview folks in bed on my iPad and I’m sure they make me sleepy. = result.. it must be the soothing American accent 😉 Thanks again Daniel 🙏
So glad Janine you found us 😊! And that the way we teach has been helpful. Joseph is actually one of our graduates! You can hear an interview with him here, it’s in the success stories playlist. He’s super nice, knowledgeable and has lived it. Thanks for the support and let us know how things go 😊
@@thesleepcoachschool8192 great stuff will do🫡 I’m looking forward to reading your book it should arrive on Saturday 📖
Sounds wonderful! Thanks for getting the book, hope you’ll find much value there 🙂
Hi. Did you have videos about sleep apnea? I keep waking up from snores/ choking etc and I've had it for a long time but thing is my apnea seems to get WORSE as the quality of my sleep and my anxiety spike. When my anxiety isn't there, I tend to wake up maybe after 5 hours from this but when it is it's constantly waking up from it, often the second I try to sleep
Hi Aya, yes there is one. I can remember when but if you search through the insomnia insight episodes there is one
Hi Daniel, do you have any videos for sleep maintenance insomnia?
Hi Alexa,
You know, the way I teach is that experiencing trouble falling asleep, and trouble falling back asleep are just two different ways that we can experience the fear of not sleeping. There’s no principal difference between the two.
When our brain is scared of not falling asleep in the evening, we have sleep onset insomnia. When our brain is afraid of not falling back asleep, after waking up, we have sleep maintenance insomnia.
And when our brain is not afraid of being awake, neither will bother us.
This said, I should make a specific video on this topic! I’ll do that soon. Maybe next Monday. In the meantime, you can check out insomnia, insight, 461 which is on sleep Onset insomnia, but it really is just a mirror of the video ill make about sleep maintenance insomnia.
Hi, Daniel. Why i have falling sleep problem again? I thought i'm fine after a few months of practicing sleep window. Last couple days, i can't fall sleep again. Why it happen?
Hi Christina,
Check the speed bump playlist… often we think it’s the sleep window that worked, when it really only lead to us not trying to sleep… it can be a bit confusing but the playlist covers all this
