  • Grand Seiko fans are a passionate tribe! They'll tell you that Zaratsu polishing is the best watch finish known to man. They'll tell you how many rubies are in the high accuracy quartz, and how they patented the spring drive movements, and how overall it's a better product than Rolex. Don't ever argue with them, or dare to disrespect the brand, as they will track you down and Sumo you into submission with a tirade of facts on how Grand Seiko is the only truly in-house watchmaker. I've owned several GS in the past, and they've never quite stuck around in my collection. I'm having another try with this beauty!! In another video I will compare it directly with my Rolex Datejust 36mm, and I will give you my thoughts on which is the best watch!!

    What a beauty!
    I’m rather GS biased as I bought a new SBGR255 earlier this year. Photos don’t capture the way the indices and hands reflect the light like mirrors.
    It’s dazzling in bright sunlight.
    And the dial is much more complex and deep than it appears on-line.
    Can’t stop looking at mine!

      I totally relate! GS is truly one of those watches you have to wear in natural light to appreciate. The boutique lights are not kind!

    Always wanted a SBGR261 with that warm Ivory dial. I prefer it on the the leather strap as I hear the GS bracelets are the real weak point of the brand.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 месяца назад

      The bracelets are ok for the price point of the lower end models but you would definitely want something better for the high end

      Than you, yes the deal clincher for me on used watches is all the original boxes and paperwork. I will say that I think the GS kit puts the other watch brands to shame. The storage case is actually usable, unlike the Omega and Rolex ones which are pretty but not very good at actually storing the watch

    I like it, if I get a GS I'd be going for one of the manual spring drive models

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  3 месяца назад

      Yes Spring Drive is the ultimate movement from GS isn't it. Manual wind gives it that extra tactility too!

    Personally, to get excited about GS I usually need to see a spring drive or unusual dial. But nice to see you experimenting with other brands. Hope you continue to try non-hype watches.

      I have had lots of non-hype watches, and this is my 4th Grand Seiko. Not my first rodeo! However, RUclips likes the hype watches, so a lot of good content is going unwatched out there...

    Beautiful Grand Seiko!. I prefer the older models like yours. An having a solid caseback with that amazing Grand Seiko embossed is so much better than seeing the movement. Nothing wrong with the braclets. So much better than a rolex. That is a perfect watch.

      @@TheRandomWatchDude Most people will call me crazy or stupid, but i had that feeling with my orient star watch compared to a omega constellation eagle. I returned the omega the next day. An i wear my orient star . But this older Grand Seiko is beauty. You have a gem. Always keep it. They do not make Grand Seikos like this anymore. I love the caseback. That is what gives the watch its full charm!. I am not impressed with open casebacks . I feel they are used too much. Its supposed to be for a rariety. A beautifully done closed caseback nothing beats it .

      Haha just turn the volume off and watch the pictures. Or better still if you're going to post stupid comments, just don't watch! And watch your grammar as you changed your tense from talking to me, to talking to someone else. I could interpret the 2nd part of your comment as you talking about yourself, based on the tense you used in the first part. You also need to check your spelling on 'your' which should have been 'you're'. You're welcome! 😁

    Flippin eck that looks a minter Mark. 1500 quid is a bargain especially against some of the crap churned out these days for that kind of money. Personally I think the clasp is cute as a button and lack of micro adjust would not bother me as I tend to wear my bracelets quite loose, make that slack as a yak !. Nice size too, small is good !. I've been wearing a propper job small watch for the past few days , 34mm Rolex OP Date from 1965. You have certainaly snared a stoater there, love it mate.

    Lovely watch! I have the Sbgr251, a later iteration. Only difference is that it doesn’t have the double logo and it has a display case back. I have no problem wearing it in most situations. I like it so much I also have the black version as my only other GS. Enjoy

      The 251 looks almost identical but I think it has the upgraded movement inside too, which is a nice upgrade in specs. Congratulations on yours. What I didn't mention was the drilled lugs making strap changes more bearable.

    In my opinion, the Omega Seamaster Chronometer and all Swiss-made chronometers are not necessarily overrated when compared to the Japanese Spring Drive movement. Both watchmaking traditions have their own merits and offer unique advantages. As someone who owns both a Seiko LX titanium Spring Drive and an Omega Seamaster, I appreciate the craftsmanship and precision of both timepieces.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  3 месяца назад

      Agreed they are both excellent examples of watchmaking

    • @kresimirpleic
      @kresimirpleic 3 месяца назад +1

      Just out of curiosity, why do you folks speak of "watchmaking" and "craftsmanship" while talking about mass produced, machine made and moslty machine decorated watches equipped with mass produced, machine made and machine decorated movements like Omega and Grand Seiko? Especially since neither brand has some notable inclusion of an actual living, breathing watchmaker during the production of most of their watches. I am genuinely interested.

    • @greenerick
      @greenerick 3 месяца назад +1

      @kresimirpleic yes very true. You have got me

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  3 месяца назад

      @kresimirpleic quite simply, they make watches, which by definition makes them watchmakers. Whether it be CNC operated or manual, the parts are still made on lathes or milling machines. The steel is cast by a foundry etc.

    • @kresimirpleic
      @kresimirpleic 3 месяца назад

      @@TheRandomWatchDude I don't want to start an argument or go off topic (I already kind of am oftopic in relation to the video). But Omega doesn't make watches. They assemble watches. Even their "production" facility in Bienne is literally made for assembly. With GS it is a bit harder to determine exactly because made in Japan vs Swiss made have quite different legal requirements - Japanese law is stricter. Japanese brands tend to be more vertically integrated, but Seiko (not Grand Seiko), Citizen and Casio are all examples of brands that are in the vast majority of cases made overseas and in most cases also assembled overseas - not in Japan. Watchmaking and mass productuon are for the most part mutually exclusive. There is some overlap, but less than people might think. And there is more engineering involved than classic watchmaking. Mass production is mass production. Watchmaking is high level craftsmanship that implies a significant input of a watchmaker during the manufacturing phase and in most cases it can't result in mass production (I'm not talking about local watchmakers who will service your watches - they are also called watchmakers, obviously, but they don't work in manufacturing). Both Omega and Grand Seiko average less than 9 (nine) watchmaker hours per watch. That is all I am pointing towards. Both brands offer great watches and production quality, but to use them as an example of great craftsmanship or watchmaking seems to me like a misplaced compliment. I would personally save such compliments for the likes of Roger W Smith, Laurent Ferrier, Mauritz Grossman, Lang & Heyne, Romain Gauthier, Greubel Forsey, F. P. Journe and others of that caliber (no pun intended).
