I live in Ecuador, and when I visit friends in the U.S., I am always surprised that a whole kitchen cabinet is often dedicated to just water bottles. Recently, I wondered why someone I was staying with would own so many water bottles. We went to Target that day, and that person bought ANOTHER one. This is not funny. Our planet cannot sustain this kind of thoughtless waste.

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  4 года назад +14

Yes unfortunately most things can be acquired relatively cheap, and therefore get purchased and discarded in a mindless way. One of the best things about minimalism if you ask me :)

@@SimpleHappyZen Yes, one of the best things about minimalism is trying not to take more from the planet than I need. I had never stopped to think about something that should be so obvious: Everything we own is made out of a piece of the planet, which is why consumerism is not sustainable. I heard Charles Eisenstein mention that idea in a talk. He's a very interesting guy with some truly bright ideas. You can find him on RUclips, and he's written several books.

This video really got me thinking... So I took an inventory of my clothes and happy to report that after konmari’ ing our house two years ago, I only own clothes that I either like or wearing out so I can responsibly say that that item no longer serves me. So, one heavy winter (ski) jacket, one biker jacket, one old trench coat (lost the belt a long time ago), one very thin summer rain jacket. Shoes: one pair of tall boots, one pair of ankle boots, one pair of sneakers. One pair of hiking boots that double as my rain boots since they can pass through puddles. This sounds like a lot but it’s much reduced. Some of my friends have ten pairs of sneakers! One scarf, one winter hat. One pair of sunglasses. One backpack and one diaper bag (I’m a mom of two). Again thanks for this video!

Pens and pencils: as a mother and a person who handwrites a lot, I am not throwing my extras. But what I do is keep my stash away in a case. That way I don't have 10 around being used. I stopped using cologne but I used to love them when I was younger. A family member is sensitive to colognes. So now I use a little vanilla, or almond oil, clove, Peppermint, or citrus from citrus peels. I mix my own. It's easy to use actual flowers from the garden.
I used to buy only the perfume samples. They come in tiny jars, and are easier to completely use up.
I have a glass water bottle, with a metal cap, and it's got a silicone sleeve to help your grip on it.

I love reading historical fiction which tends to lean towards an aesthetic “library” ! I just like shelves full of books because... I don’t know why! Reference books as well, I have many taking up shelf space but that’s the only place in the house that I tolerate clutter, if you consider it to be that. I do, but it’s clutter I want rather than what I want to be rid of.
That said I think an e reader is a great idea if you are reading on the go or transporting books to a place of study. When I was studying for my degree we had some lovely course material in the form of large or very thick books. I could hardly carry it though!

Vera, this video is why I love you! 🥰 You make me truly reconsider my minimalist journey. So, we have had conversations about books before, so you know I totally cannot do the e-reader. And if I could give you my e-books, I would. The library doesn’t work for me because I, as a professor, tend to make notes in my books about things I find intriguing. And library books sometimes smell like the previous patrons who borrowed them.🤢 Nonetheless, the other items like scarves, cardigans, boots, purses, etc. prove rather difficult for me to minimize. I cannot part so easily with these costly things even though I don’t use much of them. I have about 15 cardigans because the piece is central to my style, but I still find that number a bit excessive. I own three pairs of scissors: craft, cooking, and general use. I have three beverage containers: hot tea, smoothies, and water at the gym. See where I am going with this? 🤦🏾‍♀️ I minimized my home decor, furniture, and personal hygiene stuff but not much else. However, I’m inspired to reconsider all of this other excess, so thanks again, my friend. A cup of hot tea is on me when I finally visit the Netherlands.💚

Thanks so much Teresa I loved reading your comment! :) Maybe try this. Do you have a friend where you could store a box with some things for 6 months? Try one category of the items you mentioned where you kind of feel you want to downsize, and put like half of them in that box. Ask a friend to keep it for you and check back 6 months later. I think this might give you an idea of what it would be like to have less of them around. Maybe you'll find that you miss them, which can make you feel better about owning them. Maybe you'll find that you actually didn't miss them at all, which could help you feel better about donating or selling them. Just an idea :) Good luck!!!

Still own one pare of corded earphones. They will have to do the job until they brake. I love me a good e-reader and was using it for 6 months traveling by bike. It is so handy BUT the books are just so expensive on it, that at home I like to rent them in a library or from friends or pick them up for free in this bookshelfs around the city, where everyone can swap books for free. From time to time I buy a book on a flea market. Just to let you know about how dangerous cheap sunglasses can be, so that you don't damage your eyes (what happened to my eyes): Sunglasses without a good quality of protection are really dangerous for your eyes, because when you wear them your iris widens (as if you were in the shade), but without a good protection in the glasses, your iris gets damaged and super sensitive to sunlight. Read a few articles to that matter a few years ago, they were all in german, but I hope I explained it in an easy way.
Thank you for the great video :) I liked to see where you already downsized and in which categories you are trying, because there are areas, where I am currently trying to do the same: jewelery, books, furniture, beed sheets, make-up, clothes.... I am still in the beginning of my minimalism-journey, so I am still downsizing in a lot of categories.

Thanks for sharing Anna! I'm going to check to see if the UV filter on them still works. If not, I will invest in one good quality pair to protect my eyes and get rid of this one. I think it's important to be mindful of things like this, we only have one pair of eyes :)

I absolutely own corded headphones!! I do not have the earbuds specifically because of my minimalist lifestyle. I don't buy trends and I already feel like Apple completely controls my life so I am specifically not buying anything related to them except for absolute essentials. I have an iphone6 and I will have it until it completely dies.

Dear Vera, I hope you read this comment and consider to make a video about it some times in the future. I am an academician, I teach in a university, and due to my job I find it super difficult to declutter my tons of books. I feel it is extremely difficult to get rid of them as I know that I'll be needing them for so many things related to my job in te future such as research and teaching materials. Most of them has no e-book version as they're quite old books. At some point I realized that I couldn't get rid any of them and just gave up. But on the other hand, their existence is stimulating the minimalist side of me. I've been looking for any video about minimalist academician in the internet, but I can't find any. Do you think you can help me with this? Also, have you ever considered to make a video about financial minimalism or early retirement? Thank you so much!

Love your Christmas Tree! I'm not there yet when it comes to books - I love real books. Yes, just 1 TV (although probably better to have none). I like different colour scarves, but can see that just one neutral quality one would serve just as well. I used to have just one watch, but now have 4, but usually wear one every day and another for dressing up. Am not sure about just one cardy; I live in the UK and am of an age where you usually need one!! Well done Vera for all your 'ones'; it really makes sense. So wise. If we have just one (of a thing), we tend to look after it better. Thank you for all your Zen Calm.

@@SimpleHappyZen Yes, it's so lovely to see a blue sky. We've had some nice, bright days, mixed in with some blustery weather. Really looking forward to Spring. And today, Monday 9th March, is the Super full moon - time to declutter! (Traditionally, the sign of Virgo is "associated with women who literally sorted the wheat from the chaff". (Moonology.com). Full moon in Virgo helps you to declutter, so use the 'meticulous' energy to help you let go of stuff. A Spring Clean, yes, but also look at the 'inner' stuff. This is what I need to do, and now!

Headphones/microphones: Corded analog ones cost less than wireless or digital ones.
E-readers: You have less rights with a digital book than with a physical book. You can't get used books that cost less than new ones. Some illustrations may be missing or too small to read. The publisher sometimes doesn't grant the right to include certain pictures in the e-book and you don't realize it until after you've bought it. You have to buy all e-books through one large corporation rather than any local independent bookstore. You can't sell or give a way a book when you've finished it. You'd have to sell the entire e-reader and all the books at once. You can't lend a book to somebody, or if you can it's only to somebody in the same e-book network (mine is Barnes & Nobles Nook) and only for a set period of time (e.g., three weeks). I get books first from the library, second from a used bookstore, third from a new bookstore, and fourth for my e-reader. I only buy books that I know I'll read again and again long term, or a cheap used one for short-term reading, and maybe once a year I'll buy a popular new book that I'd have to wait 6-12 months for at the library. Now with the library putting returned books in quarantine 72 hours, only being able to pick up books three afternoons a week, and being unable to browse the shelves, it will take even longer to get them and I may have to buy more books.
Christmas trees: I buy a live tabletop-sized rosemary plant. It looks like a Christmas tree, smells good, and I can use it as an herb. After Christmas I put it on my deck to continue growing. I also buy one for my mom and give it to her. Once I bought a "lawson false cypress" the same size. It too looks like a Christmas tree, and it's still alive three years later.
I don't know what I have one of, but I have two spatulas, ice cream scoops, and chef's knives, because I use them so much every day along with my roommate that I don't want to constantly wash one every time I turn around or have to hunt for it if it's not in sight. I have two backpacks, jackets, scarves, flat caps, and water bottles, so that when one breaks (the backpack) or I lose it (the other things) I immediately have a spare. These are so important to me I don't want to wait a weekend to buy it, or days if it's out of stock, or get one I don't really like and is not on sale, or buy it online, so I keep a spare. But if it's something i can go without for a while or don't use very much, then I'll have only one of it.

Hey Vera this is a great video I’m going to say that I have a safety razor with an extra handle and also two badger hair shave brushes. I also generally use Palmolive shaving cream. My most expensive thing has been the razors the brushes the blades are fairly cheap and the shaving cream is fairly cheap I also use Florida water and lotion as an aftershave treatment. For years I would use a disposable razor but for five years ago I found out the shaving with a safety razor is more than up front cost but it’s better for the environment and it’s also more sanitary in regards to not getting a infection started so recommend to all men to use a safety razor and also I’m starting to lean more toward e-books versus paper books because the environmental type factors involved. I will go ahead and give my wife a shout out too she used reusable grocery bags this week during her shopping and we are both very impressed with them so I would suggest that everybody use them as well it’s more than one item I know that but I believe these can constantly be reused so in a way they help things

Hi. I have wired earphones too 😄 it feels like they are more gentle to my ears. I have wireless ones too, but using them mostly when do my workout or listen to the music. Using wireless earphones for a long time makes my ears hurt a bit. I'm sensitive 😊

For extra pens, maybe give them to a waitress at a restaurant to use? They always need pens.
