This is the method I've been using for the last 4 years and it works just great. I throw in some regular clawhammer occaisionally just for a little different sound. Thanks for a great tutorial.
It almost seems like you have instructional experience. I don't play banjo, though your teaching videos are quite enjoyable, if for no other reason than your instructional style. Well done!
Glad to do it! To your question, yes, up picking and clawhammer translate fairly well. There are some differences that would require tweaking but if you had a clawhammer tab it wouldn’t take much effort to read it as an up picking tab. The major difference is the persistent brushing in up picking, which may or may not be the case in clawhammer.
Thanks. Search for “Sally Ann” on my channel. You’ll see the I have both an up picking and clawhammer version of essentially the same rendition that came from Bertie Dickens. There are tabs to go with both, so you can make a direct comparison of the two styles.
I have been trying to work out up picking for a while and it finally clicked for me. Thank you for the excellent demonstration!
Glad that I could help. I’m working on a “beyond the basic stroke” follow up video, so stay tuned. More to come!

Wonderful! And yes, it is pretty easy to mix down picking and up picking. Many source players did that. Up picking blends well with 2F picking too.
@@banjojack I also blend it (easily) with 2F picking. Thanks for the reply.
@@CryptoCoyote-py3dd We think, and play, alike!
Thanks for this, Jack. Very clear explanation. I’ve been trying some up picking… it’s going slow!
Just keep at it Mike, it will come in time. If you are used to thumb lead, it will be odd for a while.

All thanks to the seven step program for recovering academics. The banjo is calling you Mike...
Thanks for this explanation! I guess you could play a clawhammer tune in the up picking style? I'm new to banjo just thought I'd ask. Ty.

@banjojack thanks for your quick reply. I will try substituting up picking. Ty! Great channel.
